Hello all.

I have a beautiful static model of a Brixham trawler and am considering building a simple(less detailed) version for RC.

Has anyone here built one like this before? What especially should I be aware of, pitfall-wise?

Look forward to replies.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hello! Looks like a very nice model and I love the design. If you have the plans, can you share them? The only thing you have to be careful with on something like this is the displacement is such that you may need more weight than the hull will float, follow? The thing I have seen is similiar builds sometimes put a weight below the keel-outside the hull- for stability. Other than that-being a schooner rig, it won't be hard to set up the sail controls and should sail wonderfully. Look at the build logs hereand rcuniverse to get ideas for running the lines. What dimensions are you shooting for? I would imagine 4-6 foot should be very do-able, the smaller you go the harder to get the weight low enough for stability. Good luck and keep up this post, we'll all be watching and if you need help, let us know and we'll be glad to point you in the right direction.

Hi 1967250s,

It is a beautiful model, one of many different static models built by my father, Frank. I'm fortunate enough to have a "James Craig" model at about 120cm long as well as a bread and butter construction Thames barge "Celia Jane" at about same length.

The trawler is about 120cm in length total and probably 80-90cm high. Beam at about 20cm. I would want a similar sized RC version. I've a feeling the plans were a free set in Model Boats magazine many moons ago. I shall consult the archives...

Yes I figure on running a fin and bulb to sail the boat. Otherwise, very wobbly!lol!

Hmmm....hobby bench getting busy...

Cheers,

Andrew

Ok. Partial success.

Have found sheet 2 of plan mm1275 from Argus/ModelBoats which shows profile and deck view...but missing sheet 1...hurummph!

Original model is 39cm hull length + bowsprit. Mine is double sized. Hull = 78cms + bowsprit for total length of 107cms

So what I need is sheet 1 of plan mm1275 if anyone, reading this, knows where to lay their hands on one.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hurrah! Now to find out if it is still in business. I did look around the web and found a "james Craig" in Oz, Sydney to be exact, but it is a brig, I believe, and an older design-see here- http://www.mlssa.asn.au/nletters/january2008.htm - it is at the bottom of the page, not a fishing schooner as yours is. Also this place-http://www.myhobbystore.com/1992/-Argus-MM405.html - has plans of a schooner, but it lacks the plumb stem your lovely has. Have to do some more searching. I've looked at a lot of boats lately and think yours is the loveliest of the lot, I love the rake and set of the sails. It would be my first "scale" boat build, even though I have a Newport 12, an EC12, and an AC boat, they are only semi-scale. Too bushed right now to look more. G'Luck

Couldn't not look some more.... http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/07/columns/steele/index6.htm about halfway down is a mention of "Revive" and a gentleman in Auckland?! Close to you?
Quite a lot on the old Brixham trawlers, actually, should be able to find some plans somewhere. The Baltimore schooner "Lynx" is lovely, too.
May have to join the Chesapeake Schooner Society, as I am fairly close! Right, got to sleep some now zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hey 1967250s,

Thanks for your interest!

Yes, I wasn't very clear with my first post...sorry. The "James Craig" is a restored brig that runs cruises to help pay its way.

My late father became a member of the Maritime museum here in Sydney. A model maker in the museum made a limited run of hulls of the James Craig for modellers and dad snaffled one. He passed on before completing it unfortunately but it is 95% done. That is also in the living room.

I have found a place that will sell the plans for the Revive but as I already have 1 sheet, I'll wait and see if anything develops from the forums first.

Cheers,

Andrew

Do tell who sells plans of Revive? Gears were skipping when I crossed the two boats-long day. How about some pics of "JC"? I was also intrigued by something the Birixham site said, there was one called "Ibex" which was unbelievably fast, won even with cut down rig! I'd love to see it, but couldn't find a pic in my state. Bye

Hey again 1967250s et al.

Have bitten pricey bullet and ordered plans today.

Have also just received 2 mg995 servos (I know, cheap, but they work well) and a small wireless camera..

Methinks they all have a home already... :-)
