Recently I bought a brand new Kyosho Sunstorm 1000 with a GXR28MR engine. I followed the start up instructions for breaking in, which were very simple: turn the needle valve 2 ½ turns from the closed position, prime the engine by filling fuel into the tank and putting 2-3 drops of fuel into the carburetor whilst accelerating.

Now when I tried starting by putting the glow plug heater on the glow plug and pulling the recoil starter rope...nothing happens whatsoever. After a few failed attempts, it becomes very difficult to pull the rope, and still nothing happens. No sign of wanting to start whatsoever.

Have i flooded the engine? If so, what am I supposed to do? Is there anything wrong with the above procedure? Yes...I am a complete newb to this, so please dont hesitate to say anything.

Yes,
the engine is flooded.
remove the glow plug, flip boat upside down and pull the pull start to get the fuel out.

Best method for starting, don't put any fuel in the carb. Glow warmer on, Put your thumb or finger over the carbs intake, pull the pull start and watch the fuel in the fuel line being drawn from the tank to the carb.

it should pop and start running, it is possible that the needle setting stated in the instructions is too much or not enough.

Dan.

Thanks for the reply.

I've done everything you mentioned above: removed excess fuel, placed the glow warmer on, thumb on carb intake, pulled the starter, but still, its giving resistance, though fuel is being pulled, but no, the engine doesnt start .

I must have pulled the starter 100 times throughout the day, but its not working at all. Not even after emptying the flooded fuel (to the extent where i dont see anything more coming out of the carb intake hole) does it want to start.

I'm assuming you should be able to pull the starter 20-30cm out, but instead, it gives resistance all the time and allows max 15cm at most.

What else can I do?

one thing you can do, since I just realized that its a new engine is loosen up the glow plug about 1 or 2 turns than try it.
This will remove some of the compression and will be easier, once and if you get it started tighten the plug (while running).

Also, take the plug out and put your glow start on it, check the coil, it should turn to a bright orange very quickly.
if nothing happens than your glow starter could be dead or the plug is a dud.

Dan.

Tried that too, and the plug is functioning, becuase the coil does glow. I've also loosened it slighly, but once again, same effect, nothing happens. The rope is giving resistance, more than it should I supposesince i cant pull it out very far.

Can it be that it is just simply bust?

That might be the case. A few of the early GXR-28 Engines where too tight in the top of the cylinder. I've had a few issues starting this boat too..

But when you drain the fuel out by removing the glow plug u need to REALLY get rid of EVERYTHING. Pull the recoil 15+ times while its upside down. All the fuel that is lodged in around the engine needs to get out. Try a hot plug and 25% nitro if its still giving you issues..
