I want to get a FAST plane (so far all my planes are aerobatic, not fast).

I was thinking the Predator ARF with the Rossi Q500 engine would be a good start.

Tell me what you think, and is there any groups in NJ that race?

Thanks

The rossi engine will not let you down in the speed dept. There were king of the hill in the late 80's. we race with 46fx's because of parts avalibilty and they end up being as fast and a little quietier than the rossi.
The preditor is a good choise, look up past threads to get all the mods. and altercations people do. I have 2 on the shelf ready to go with 46fx's and a few flights on one of them. They fly where you point them. Find different wheels though, I broke all mine in quick order. I got wheels from http://www.jettengineering.com they are top notch.

thanks Splatt,,,

it just so happens I have .46FX not doing anything at the moment..... What kind of exhaust do you use with your .46FX? What kind of speeds can I expect with that combo?
Do those wheels work off grass?????

Thanks!

ya, My club is called grassfield. You launch at full throttle. when push the plane off, it's on the ground for maybe 3 feet then its up and away. When landing it's dead stick, so bleed off the air speed and plop it down. There's no taxi'ing around with a quickie. Of course a normal set of wheels might help if the field is'nt great.

with the stock 46fx and stock muffler and a 9.5*7.5N APC prop it should go about 120 mph. This is pretty much what we race with here in MN. for the slower class of quickie.

I recommend that you get the 4 bolt backplate mount for the OS 46 FX from Jett Engineering. Make sure you specify the engine you will be using.

While you are ordering from Jett, Get the slim BubbleJett tank and a Jett Tanker. The bubbleless tanks protect your engines by keeping bubbles out of the system. You can go without the bubbleless system, but if you think you may do some racing, it's best to go ahead and get it now. Plus, even though they're not on the site, Jett also has a 12 oz bladder tank. There is a line of tanks known as Tettra that has a full range of bubbleless tanks also and they are available from Performance Specialities or Central Hobbies.

See Q-500 Pylon Racing for more info and accessories.

a back plate or radial mount makes for a real smooth look. It bolts onto the engine via the backplate screw holes. Most of us got them on our stuff

Thanks for the info PW,

Which size Jett tank would you use with this combo? I REALY like the look of that engine mount.

I’ve read that people are using the Hitec 225’s in the plane. Are metal gears preferred?

I got the slim tank for my preditor. the metal geared 225's get alot of gear slop quickly. the nylon geared one are the hot ticket.

Get the slim tank, because you need to do some reinforcing to the wing hold down blocks, and the sim tank will give you a little more room.

I think you can get the speed on up there if you try the 8.75 x 8W or 8.75 x 8.5NN props. But I must add the disclaimer that Jesse (Splatt) has more a ton more experience with 46's on Q-500's than I do.

You will also need to reinforce the firewall on the Predator.

Look at the Q-500 Accessories page for other useful accessories and suppliers.

For the price of the Rossi,,, if you were to spend a few more $$$, I would suggest the Sport Jett 40,,, you'll get MORE SPEED and a lighter engine than you would from a Rossi

Bill,

Do you mean the Jett Super Sport .40 (aka SEMPRA Jett)which has all the same dimensions as a Quickie-JETT .40 and JETT QM40, or the Sport-Jett .40 that has the OS .46 FX mounting pattern?

For a new racer, The Super Sport .40 would be my choice because it will fit the same backplate mounts and beam mounts as the 428 and 422 engines.

I could be wrong about the Sport-Jett, but I'm pretty sure I double checked this with Dub. There was (still is) an error on the JETT web site engine dimension page.
