I recently bought my father-in-law a Magnum .46 BB (not schneurle (sp?) ) w/ remote needle valve. Yesterday we took it out in a field to break it in with 5% fuel. We followed the instructions closely. It ran quite well and idled well also. The problem occurs when full throttle is applied. The engine doesn't get up to full speed. I can get it there by quickly pinching the fuel line and letting it go. It then will hit the high end. I can also get it to the high end by playing with the needle valve a little. I have followed the instructions on setting the needle valve. I leaned it out until I found peak and then richened it about a 1/4 turn.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Herb

You're running rich on the high end. When you pinch the fuel line, you make it lean out. That's why it hits the high end momentarily.

Has the engine been broken in yet? If not, keep it rich for a few tanks then gradually lean it out with the high speed needle.

If it is already broken in, lean the high end out on the needle. Turn the needle in just to where the engine peaks then back it out about 1/4 turn. This insures you won't go lean when the prop unloads in the air.

I understand that when I pinch it, it will go lean, but that doesn't seem to be what is going on here. When I hit full throttle it gets to a certain RPM. Then, when I pinch the fuel line, it goes to a significantly higher RPM. When I say pinch I mean that I quickly pinch it and let go. The engine then maintains at that higher RPM. It doesn't seem to me that this is because it is rich and I'm leaning it out. It is acting much different that that.

Sorry if I didn't make the problem clear in my previous post.

Sounds like you're engine might be loading up on the low end. How is the transition from low to high? Does it burbble (sp) during the transition? If so, your low end needle is set to rich.

Have you tried a new glow plug?

It isn't loading up at idle. It will idle for an indefinate amount of time and it also transitions very well. The only problem seems to be the high end setting. I haven't tried a new glow plug, but I'm pretty sure that isn't it. It is definately something with the fuel flow. It idles well and runs well at the top, it just doesn't get all the way there without pinching the fuel line.

Is your throttle linkage allowing the carb to open completely? Also, you may want to use 10% nitro so it gets hotter and breaks in better.

Yes, the throttle is opened completely. If it wasn't, then the engine wouldn't peak out after I messed with the fuel line. Remember, it does peak. If the throttle wasn't open, it wouldn't do this.

Isn't 5% going to be better to break the engine in? Maybe I should start this discussion in this thread until I can get answers for my other question.

I thank those who have offered their opinions thus far, but I need more ideas.

It sounds like the engine does not have enough power to accelerate up to max. speed without temporarily leaning it. If you were using a pipe, it may be a bit short, restricting the power at lower speeds.

You didn't say what prop you are using. You may be overloading it slightly. With the standard muffler, I would expect something in the 12K region with an 11x6 prop. Props do vary quite a lot, so this is only approximate. 11x5, 10x6 or 10x7 would also be sizes to try, depending on the application (lower pitch for aerobatics, higher pitch for speed).

Of course, you could just be too rich in the mid-range. Some juggling of the high and low needles might help in this case.
