RC airplanes will become like everything else we use in that they will be "throw away" models with a compactor at each field for the "retired" ones, and a vending machine to supply us with a replacement model on the spot, complete with radio and (charged) batteries; Gasoline will reach twelve dollars a gallon, and the only advantage of gas engines will be gone; little children will look at the cob-web covered racks of CA glue in the store with wonder as their grandpa tells them how we used to actually glue sticks together to build a model; new battery technology will make charging
your electric airplane a once-a-year annoyance; I...I can't go on. I've bummed myself out. What's the point of life going on? Hang on-going to the field to burn holes in the sky? I AM SO THERE!

It's what you do with the time given to you that makes the difference.

You got Prozac? C'mon, share! The best I can do is a half-dozen Bud Lights! You wanted to know what the future holds, Art! Don't shoot the messenger. I am OK for now, but when one of the new guys asks "What's balsa?" I will sadly lower my head, shake it slowly with a tear trickling down my cheek, and remember the way it was. Jeez, I just bummed myself out again!

i predict that the people who are whining about the end of balsa planes will shut up,(no offence)because its not gonna happen. Balsa planes might become more rare, but people with lots of time will still build them, and they will still be considered great planes for someone whos a purist. I also predict that people who build SPADs and people who build balsa will get along. (yeah right!)

In the future 3D will rule. The old kit builders will sit at the end of the field waiting for the moment the runway isn't flooded with hovering profiles so they can take their beautiful warbird up and crash it on it's maiden flight. Gone are the days of looking at 3D fliers with envy and animosity. Everyone will be involved. The warbird circle flyers will be viewed as an anomoly within the sport as control line pilots are today. The 3D planes will get even more awesome and with more kids today wanting to learn 3D, talent will also be improved on. That's my prediction. It's already headed in that direction. Every new pilot that comes to the filed wants to learn to do 3D. As an instructor, I consider it my duty to shape these young impressionable minds into thinking along these lines.

I would predict some will have the courage run the gauntlet of animosity from the unwashed masses that have no idea what it is like to experiance a living, breathing airplane pulling hard and performing beautiful manuvers. All the while provideing real life tactile 'feel', something you will NEVER experiance through a few gimble springs.

I also predict that some will learn or at least attempt to learn all the Joys virtually every venue does indeed have. Think about it, when the learning stops so does the Joy. And I suspect these well rounded individuals will do so without attempts to demean every other form of model aviation.

I like experiencing a hover through my few gimble springs and a nice low slow harrier roll. I forsee a large crowd in the future at a field somewhere. One guy is torque rolling 2" above the runway. He climbs a little and does a waterfall bringing his plane back into its original position in a steady hover.
At the other end of the field is a guy putting his plane through its routine on a control line. He is in tune and one with his machine. The crowd begins to move toward one of the pilots. OH dang! My crystal ball just gave out. I can't tell which pilot the crowd is moving toward. It's a toss up.
All said in good fun.

Indeed, crowds are like sheep and will follow the herd however it is the couragious individual buck that will enjoy the fresh untrampled green grass.

Fair enough
