just out of interest, what are everyone's predictions for the future of the hobby?

I think that there will be more ARF's and less self built planes ( )
I also think that the radio equipment will be able to be made much more cheaply and many more RTF models will come out which are better quality than those of today

fire away guys...

Nice thread!
O.K. Here goes. Shooting from the hip here, not alot of for-thought but:

I predict that brake throughs in battery technology combined with urban sprawl and political correctness and air quality concerns will cause electric powered airplanes to become the main stream of the hobby. ( not that I am advocating this)

I predict the return of the FCC license.

I predict the ability to fly two or more airplanes in formation from one transmitter!

I predict that NO ONE that has ever flown an RC airplane will become president of the United States.

Been flying for 27 + years, radios haven't moved much in price. When I started, a good beginner radio was about $125, you can still get one for about that. There are a lot better top end models now though.

I too think batteries will be more popular, people will figure out that ARFs are built bad, but they will continue to fly them because they don't want to make the time to build themselves.

Oh yea, one last prediction, someone will win the lottery and not share it with me.

Digital, frequency independent radios that communicate over shared multiplexed frequencies. Interference is impossible.

Radios that come with a digital camera that mounts in the nose and displays on the front panel of the radio.

RC planes are being flown in Gyms now. I think more miniturazation will create "living room flyers". Wouldn't it be great? My wife can watch TV and have me home sitting right next to her, flying RC. Just no low passes in front of her or the TV. If she changes channels with the remote while I'm flying, will she shoot me down?

mtthomps,
I love the camera and display idea. That's getting popular in model railroading circles. With LCD's, I think that's very possible for RC.

I predict planes that will be able to with stand a crash at 100 MPH and be able to be in the air 5 minutes later.

How about Virtual reality flight simulators.
You put on the head set and your standing in your field (or a field of your choice). You could start on trainers and then work your way up to just about anything you could ever want to fly, all whilst sitting in your lounge room. You could dial in various settings such as time of day, wind speed, even add some extra planes in the air flying at the same time, with realistic crashes if you hit one. It would be great for combat practice or learning to do aerobatic manouvers.
Also great for flying when the weather is no good.

No need to dream, my friend. We already have those. They're made out of coroplast and yardsticks. But it takes more like 10 minutes to repair them.

As for me, I forsee a plane built entirely out of the material used to make wiffle ball bats (this was brought up in the SPAD forum). EXTREMELY light, EXTREMELY strong, and cheap (once the molds are built).

Or, perhaps hybrid wood materials. All the strength of the toughest woods, yet lighter than balsa. This will be done by creating hybid trees.

Oh, and lastly: my guess is, that within the next two decades, there will no longer be 'radio' control. The same control will be done by some other means (I subscribe to Popular Science).

I also forsee this BBQed ribeye steak waking me in the middle of the night, with what the space people call 'gaseous anomolies'.

I think Electric someday will be the mainstream also, but Gas will remain a powerhouse for many many many years to come.

There will be perfect arfs where there is nothing to complain about, there already coming (Extremeflightrc)

A 1/4 scale plane will be considered a 40 sized aircraft probably very soon.

Batteries will all switch to lithium ion, but that will be outdone in the near future (5 years)

I removed my predictions now, as they've already come true in most respects, and besides I feel hijacked and laid over a barrel for daring to have an opinion. A strong one, yes, but still mine.

My fault, and I'm sorry if any felt like they were being attacked.
