Hi all,

I have this ECU on my Simjet 3000, bought used and a few years old.
I had some starting troubles over the weekend and it turns out the 9.6V NiCd I am using is bad.
My question is what kind of battery to replace it with? The ECU is stamped 9.6V but I see other posts here on RCU stating that you should not attempt a start on less than 10.3V with this ECU.
So can i use a 3 cell LiPo with this?
We did try to start it with a 3 cell LiFe which is 9.9V but did not get it going on that, allthough we only made one attempt and this might have been our own fault.

An other thing I would like to know:
When I make a quick throttle-down from full power the engine will die immediately, going into cooling mode. Could this be related to the low voltage of a weak battery? We "fixed" the problem by adding a delay to the throttle channel but obviously I want the engine to perform safely without tricks like that..

It has a been long time since I have messed with SimJets, but I bet your ECU is a little "flakey". There were many issues with the older ECUs, and you are experiencing one of them (shut-down when you pull to idle fast). You have found one work-around to deal with it in the delay; another is to set an 'idle-up' with a throttle-to-throttle mix that you can turn on after you start which raises the idle RPM slightly. Short of updating to latest ECU and wiring (which I would recommend), I doubt the problem can be fixed using your current equipment. The engines themselves are VERY good, but the early electronics were a nightmare.

Regarding the batteries, I cannot be much help there because the 8-cell is all I ever used back then. I thought I read at one time you could use a higher voltage, but that memory is long past and I wouldn't feel comfortable saying it is 100%. Are you sure your battery is bad? How long have you had the engine and how many runs have you had since you bought it?

I'm sure Kerry will see your post (he is usually on early in the morning U.S time) and give you some advice/guidance.

It is very simple, Do not attemp to start the engine with any voltage at or below 10.3 volts. When the solenoids , Starter motor and glow ignitor come on, there can be as much as a 20A rush current resulting in very poor starts.

The prefered repacement battery for the D2 is a 3 cell LiPo (11.1 vdc) of at least 2200 mah.

As for the down throttle quiting, you will need to ensure that when you bring your Throttle trim up to the poitnt he YELLOW light comes on, you need to go past this point by at LEAST 3 CLICKS in to the YELLOW.

What is likely happening is that your just on the edge of the YELLOW run zone and also at the edge of the STOP position.

The battery will likely have little to do with this condition. So be sure that your Throttle ATV is set to give you a YELLOW on postion between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle.

I want to thank you for your very helpfull suggestions, I am a newbie for sure and need to learn these things :-)

I am in the process of fitting a 3 cell LiPo battery even though the original battery is improving after a few rounds of cyckling. It is only 1200mAh and 6 years old so i dont feel like useing it anyway.
As for my low end throttle it is set at 62 which gives me an equal "yellow zone" below and above center trim, I then set the trim to center when starting the engine. I may change that so I can set the trim to full when starting.

My full throttle setting is at 125 but the engine will start even if it is as low as 115, had to try that as we felt the motor gives full power at less than full throttle stick setting.
Fortunatly i now have the GSU so I can take some readings on RPM etc. I will research some more and come back if there are further issues.

In time I am sure I will replace the entire ECU unit but i want to use this one at least for the season.
This jet stuff will drain your wallet like only a woman could :-)

In your last comments you said that now you have a GSU. This sounds like you just bought it now. I have a Simjet and I would like to know where did you bought your GSU as I would like to buy one myself. Thanks

The GSU is a very very helpfull tool in trouble shooting as you have discovered.


Mario, I have not had availbility of the SIMJET GSU for over a year. I will contact SIMJET-Dk and ask what inventory they have (if any).

This unit has infra red technology and along with the optional Infra-red Transmiter borad (mouned in the aircraft) can send wireless start / run / and shut down info on the ground. However, you will need the 9 pin cable to be able to make the minimal no. of ECU adjustments such as Low/Med/Hi power output settings as well as Glow driver power etc.

In addition, you must have a 2002 D2 ECU (IR ready) and the 20 pin cable fitted w/ the associated 9 pin GSU mating plug.

If you have a D2 ECU with this cable, all you will need is the GSU. The cost of this item w/ the IR aircraft board was $275.00 USD.

SIMJET-Dk now utilizes the GASPAR 604 ECU w/ GSU.

I will advise after response form SIMJET-Dk but feel free to contact them if you wish.

How about an older (but unflown) Sonic 7000 kit-built engine with a FADEC 2000-2 rated at 9.6 v? Do you still recommend an 11.1 vdc 2200 mahlipo?

How can i reset my Fadec 2002 D2 ECU.?
How can i pull out the front of the turbine simjet 1200 AES for change the T/C. don't have screw.

Your front cover is SCREWEDon to the turbine. To remove the front cover you need to turn it to the RIGHT as it has Left hand threads.
