I have the sh .18 motor on my tornado. I orderd a rotostart back plate from rc boyz. After instaling it on the motor I found the motor will only crank over if you have removed the glow plug... Any ideas what the problem could be? I also noticed that the bolt head on the back of the motor that is attached to a shaft that the rotostart back plate covers can be removed by just pulling on it is that right?

what are u using to start, is it a drill or the actual drill starter
that bolt is the one way bearing which allows the motor to spin without that engaging all the time and yes it should slide off with the backplate off

We always suggestg at least a 1800Mah battery, more is bettery. The more MAH you have the faster and longer it will turn over. It sounds like you may also be flooding it, you should take a white paper towel and place it over the cooling head to see if it gets soaked with fuel the next time you lock it up and have to take out the glow plug. It will give you an idea weather it is locking up from fuel or compression.
