Hi all, I'm trying to get this motor running right, but it's been acting up. Using 20/20 fuel, 11x9 APC prop. Its had a whole bunch of gallons through it, and its just slowely lost power over the course of time. Valves seem to be adjusted, although I'm not 100% sure if I'm checking it right. The intructions aren't real good. The recommended feeler gauge barely fits in between the pushrods and rocker arms, so that's good, right? Should I adjust the diaphram pump screw? Thanks.

I presume you have checked the fuel filters, the check valve and the pump for debris. It is surprising what can get in there despite all the care.

PineBarron has a good point, gunk will build up in even a well taken care of engine. A common location for grunge is in the regulator. Also might consider a new O-rings and gaskets.

Not sure what feeler gauges are used with the 63 since I've never had that engine. I do have YS 120's and 140's which should be similar. Should be using two gauges. One thin and one thick. Thin gauge should be to check low clearance and thick for high clearance. Thin gauge should pass with little to no drag. Thick gauge should not pass. I've personally have had good luck setting my clearance by feelling the "click", but this may not work for some and I'm sure the guages are more precise. After setting valves, hand turn engine a few times and recheck. I may be wrong on this, but I think clearance is to be checked on a cold engine.

If your mixture seems OK but power is off, you probably don't need to fiddle with the regulator. Once it is set it dosen't need to be adjusted much if at all. You may consider replacing the diaphram. I have never worn one out but I have replaced them before in the process of year end engine teardown.

Not saying this is your issue, but I have had to reseat valves before in YS4S engines with high mileage. One of my YS140Ls had about 20 gallons of use over two years and it peaked about 400 under a new broke in 140L. I reseated the valves and presto, both new and old 140L within a 100 RPM.

I don't know what YS suggest for reseating valves, so take this with a grain of salt. What I did was use Brasso as the valve grinding compound and carefully reseated the valves. This seemed to work well. Compression by hand turning was noticably higher after reseating.

Hope this helps some.
