Hi All
Does anybody have experience with the Restrictor?
Does it help with the noise? to get under 94 DB one have to reduce the RPM, it can be done with the ATV, is it better to do so with the Restrictor?

Hello Mr. Najary,
JP has installed the restrictor into both airplanes. A little less power but more than enough, better fuel economy, and we do believe that the sound level is down.

Give it a try, there is nothing to lose.

This past week at the US F3A Masters I ran the restrictor, and an air filter in both models. Then I would make sure the RPMS were at about 8100-8200 on the ground after everything was warmed up. I used a 16.5-12W APC prop. I then used the Travel Adjust to pull back the motor to this 8100-8200 RPM....This was in addition to the restrictor and the air filter being installed.

I was hitting 90db(A) all week long and the number is 92 on grass....which is what we were flying on.

A side note to the restrictor is that it helps to make the engines response much more linear throughout the throttle band....The torque at the bottom of the motor seems to increase a little and the "after burner mode" goes away....it just clips a little off the top in the way of power....Restrictor is not a really good name for it as people get the wrong impression of the purpose of the insert. Its an accessory...much like an air filter that can help the throttle response of the motor. It helps the noise, and it helps fuel consumption....The engine will also run a little smoother and not quite as harsh with the insert installed.

Setup was Cool Power 30% Heli Pro. YS #4 plug. Central Hobbies Header, Hatori 693 pipe, Hyde AR (A) mount....Turns 8600-8800 without insert, or air filter.

I hope this helps.

I can go about 10 mins before the first burp....say just under 1.5 patterns.....Its running a little rich...and can get leaned out to almost 1.75 patterns before it wants to land.

Earlier this year I performed some noise measurements on the DZ140 to assess intake orifice noise and also the reduction of noise caused by the restrictor. The data is on an Excel spreadsheet so I'm not sure if I can attach this. If anyone can convert this to a pdf I'll send you the article which was published in the January 2003 newsletter of the Great Britain Radio Controlled Aerobatic Association (GBRCAA) (plug there !).

Anyway the results were:

Orifice noise contribution 6dB
Reduction due to restrictor 1 dB

These data were measured by rotating the engine at a constant speed without it firing to allow comparison between the conditions of throttle open and then closed.

To me this suggested that an intake silencer would be very useful but as yet I haven't found a reliable method of attaching to the DZ whilst not significantly restricting the airflow. On my last try the rpm dropped by 500rpm! Any one got any ideas?

Keith,

If you go to the Adobe web site you can register to do half a dozen or so free pdf file conversions for free.
