Wondering if anyone has tried using the Radial Saito 450 to power the Ziroli F4U. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Norm

Wow, a corsair with a real radial. I'm plannign to do this also, but I'm more interested in a Seidel ST770 7 cylinder.

But I have the same questions like you, mostly about the power required to fly the Ziroly Corsair scale-like. How about the dimensions of the Saito, can you give me some info?

Flo

Flo,

There was a Ziroli Corsair with a 450 radial at Top Gun 3 years ago, and it had plenty of power for scale-like flight, and it sure did sound nice!

The only issues I can imagine are the fuel consumption on glow vs. gas (presumably much higher than gas) and the required tank size/weight, plus the always annoying exhaust slime from a glow motor :-(

Perhaps someone else reading this will remember who had this plane (I can't recall) and you might be able to contact them with questions.

Fortunately enough, there are two versions available of the Seidel ST770. Gas or glow. I think, with an engine of this size, I would prefer the gas one.
The Seidel is a German engine, there exist some different models (5/7/9 cyls) and different sizes. Here in Europe they aresaid to be the best radial-engines (performance and look) in existence.
The one I'm looking at has around 70 ccm (in your terms this will be a 4.20).

ww2birds is referring to the Ziroli Corsair flown at Top Gun by Corvin Miller. I spoke with Corvin at length about the set-up, with plans to install a 450 radial in my corsiar. He flew it with a 22x10 prop. He informed me that you had to keep at least one plug per cylinder (rear plug on his) constantly lit with a glow device to ensure good idle, as the compression would tend to blow the plug fire out if he didn't. He had to install a 50 oz. tank, and could only get 12 minutes, tops, per flight. But, it did fly the plane nicely as 33 pounds, and sounded cool. I passed because of the cost of running the glow fuel at $15.00 a gallon.

Thanks, Flo .. I can do cc-ci conversions in my head partly due to the 18 mos. we spent living in Zurich!

Not sure where in CH you are, but I really really enjoyed belonging to the RC club in Dubendorf great guys and a great flying site.. we flew at the Swiss Air Froce Base there. As a special bonus, the three restored Ju-52s that flew sightseeing flights on weekends often taxiied right by our flightline. Those big BMW radials sounded like beautiful music to all of us!

Never did get my big gassers quiet enough to fly there, but must have put 100 flights on my old-reliable ugly stik with a 91 4-stroke!

The Seidels are clearly the class act of radials, though I suspect most people don't view them as competing with much cheaper (and less scale-like) engines like the Saito 450 .. they are clearly in a different class!

Let me know what you find out about price and availability on the Seidel gassers, I would be interested to know for some of my projects.

F4u5 .. thanks for the memory supplement on Corvin Miller!

Thanks guys. This is exactly what I neede to know. I did see Corvin Miller's F4U at the Scale Masters when they were last in Columbus, Ohio. It did sound great and mot of his flying was at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle from what I heard. I also was incorrect in thinking he was using a Siedel.

At any rate, I am going to do more looking but I am thinking the radial will be the heat for this serious competition piece. A little excess power would be helpful for the high Density Altitude (DA) in Albuquerque during the summer months which approach 8000 DA.

Thanks again for all the inputs,
Norm
