I'm saving my Aerial videos online. Does it matter if I save them as a .MOV or .mov? They don't seem to work. Right now they are .MOV All it shows in the Lowerleft corner of the screen (Internet Explorer) is a picture of a hard drive with a rep arrow pointing to it, and nothing happens at all. Can some one please help me? Thanks

Im not sure about the MOV/mov question, but the icon with a red arrow pointing to a hard drive that appears on the bottom left indicates that a file is being transferred/downloaded to your hard drive.

I use cable and modem, but even on a cable connection if the size of the download is quite large, the icon appears and nothing else seems to happen, however, after some time the requested file/download will open up its associated program and begin running.

eg. often seen when downloading large acrobat reader files (like a futaba manual), the computer appears to do nothing, the icon appears, and sometime later the acrobat reader program suddenly appears with the full futaba manual.

give it more time... will eventually come through.

after about five minutes of the download icon, it shows the Broken Quicktime Link in the center of the screen. I've tried tons of things, but can't get them to work. Would compressing them help? The last link in my signature is the link to the videos page

Two things:

(1) Files on the Internet are case sensitive. For example, 164.mov is not the same thing as 164.Mov or 164.MOV. I prefer to use all lower case for paths and files names.

(2) Your 164.MOV lego video is NOT in the quicktime format. So, you must NOT give it a "mov" extension. It is a Windows AVI file, so rename it to "164.avi" and it will work fine. I assume that your other files have a similar problem.

how would I get it into a quicktime format? The links to the files have the same extension case as the files themselves. I'm going to try converting them to a quicktime format.

You need Apple's Quicktime video compression driver. Check with [url]www.apple.com/quicktime[/url]

quote:

Yes, but the files themselves are not MOV type. They are AVI. This is confusing the file association feature on Win PC's.

quote:

Renaming them to .avi is much less work.

so I would just right click on them, then click rename and type in the file plus .avi? I would also have to change all the links to .avi, right? Also, in some websites, when I click on a link to something that uses Javascript (eg. online game) in a popup window, in the lower left-hand corner it says something like
Javascript{popup window blah blah blah}
And nothing happens. I know that Javascript is enabled, so why isn't it working?

[QUOTE]So I would just right click on them, then click rename and type in the file plus .avi?Yes, if the file is in AVI format you should rename it as you say. But do not wholesale rename everything. Rename each multimedia file so that the extension matches the native file type. Determining the file type is up to you (please do not ask me to figure them all out).

quote:

Yes, the links must match EXACTLY, including upper/lower case usage.

quote:

I do not see that Java scripting is used on your page to access these files. So, just forget about it. Writing that sort of code is way beyond a simple discussion.

Good luck.

On the web, the ".mov" extension is generally associated with Quicktime files, at least for Win PC users. The one file I checked was labeled 164.mov and was a Window AVI file (it was not Quicktime formatted).

Why not just rename one file, click it, then see what happens? It won't hurt a thing to at least try. If it works, then you know what to do.

If the video still does not play, then you have more things to check. I did notice that your server is slow, so some folks may have timeout issues downloading the large files.

Now 164.mov is 164.avi I downloaded it, and it says I don't have permission to acces this file It's icon is the one when it doesn't know what program to open it with. When I download it, it says it's an irfanview file (image viewer program) Also, is there any way to compress a video file, then have someone download it from the internet, but not use WinZip or anything like that?

I loaded it into Windows Media Player. Then I clicked File->Properties. It reported that the file I downloaded was a "Windows Media Video V7." Such files should use .avi as extensions when placed on the internet.

The AVI extension will require one of the popular multimedia players. Try upgrading to the latest Windows Media player. It has the codecs to play most video files.

I entered the path as http://www.mklinux.org/~rifel/RC/Vids/164.avi and the file correctly plays for me.

I'm loading the ones I've changed to .avi so far, and a window pops up and says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play." Other times it says "Class not registered" What does this mean, and how do I get it to work?

I looked at more of your files. You have a mix of AVI's and MOV's. For example, the 164.* is a Windows AVI. The 120.* file is a Quicktime MOV. The files extension must match the medial type or the player will be very confused.

You must inspect each file and determine what it is. The only simple way is to name them with the various media extensions and then try to play them with Windows Media Player and Quicktime (the two popular players).

As I have mentioned, the native media format must be reflected by the file extension if you post them on the internet. Otherwise it will cause grief. It is best to stick to one codec and then tell the viewing visitors what format each file is in.

so you're saying I have a native combo of avi and mov? I looked at 156.avi clicked File|Properties, and this is what it said
Length: 00:24
Bit rate: -
Media type: Video
Video Size: 720x480
Audio codec: -
Video codec: -
Location: http://www.mklinux.org/~rifel/RC/Vids/156.avi

Yes. You have a mix of video file types. From my poking around on your server's directory I have seen a few Windows AVI's and a lot of Quicktime MOV's. There could be other codec compression file types. The original author would know what was used, so you might ask the source of the files to tell you what they can.

quote:

I looked at 156.avi clicked File|Properties, and this is what it said
That file is too big (100MB) for me to download. At your 128Kbit server speed, it would take two hours for me to see it.

However, since the Windows Media Player cannot report the file type then the file extension does not match the media. I suspect that it is Quicktime, but it could be anything. Just rename it back to 156.mov and try playing it in Quicktime.

There is little I else I can do for you. At this point you must poke sticks at each file and try to get them to play. Rename them to .avi and try WMP. If that does not work then rename them to .mov and try Quicktime. If that does not work then you are in trouble since there are dozens of codecs out there and I have no words of wisdom on how to check them all out.

As of right now, I'm pretty sure that all of the skateboard videos ([url]www.mklinux.org/~rifel/RC/Videos.html[/url]) are quicktime, and the RC Car ones are avi. You're right about the 2 hours. Do you know how you can make ae download link in HTML or Javascript so users download a compressed file (eg. Winzip) instead of loading it off the internet?

But how do you get one of those "Click to download" links, or is that just another link to the file. And, whenever I click on one of the files online, it say in WMP "Class Not Registered" What does that mean, and how do I fix it?

[QUOTE]But how do you get one of those "Click to download" links, or is that just another link to the file.It is just a link created with standard html code. You should pick up a book on creating web pages for more help.

Here is a sample of the required html code:
Click to
download

quote:

And, whenever I click on one of the files online, it say in WMP "Class Not Registered" What does that mean, and how do I fix it?
I suppose it means that it does not understand the file type. What file are you clicking on? What is the link?

Windows Media help: [URL=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsupport%2fmediaplayer%2fwmper%]Click Here.[/URL]

If you think it is codec related you can make WMP automatically install the required codecs using Tools|Player and selecting "Enable Automatic Codec Download."

The lego video works because it is a Win AVI file. The 66.avi does not work since it is NOT a win AVI file. It works if it is renamed to 66.mov and played using the Quicktime viewer. I have not downloaded any other files because your server is so slow that it would take too long for me to do so. However, these two samples show what is going on.

There is not much more I can say. You must name these files so that the extension matches the perferred media player. Just review my prior comments on this and it should be clear on what you need to do.

I renamed 66.avi into 66.mov does it work now? The reason I'm asking is because none of them work on my computer for some strange reason
