Went to the field this am to try the above mentioned.
1) I notice at high RPM (full Throttle) the engine will not hold a steady RPM. It will hit 10200, 10180 then drop to 9800 then back to 9990 and back up to 10200 again.
2) When idling at low rpm it will drop down to 1990, 2K, 2150, 2300, 2480 etc. Again, It will never hold an rpm for any amount of time. I have richened it up to the point it will die, and it still surges. Per the instructions and YS Power website this should indicate a lean condition. However when I try and transition to full throttle it just loads up and dies. Too Rich.!
3) I have played with the regulator and have moved it in a complete turn in and out. I will retune the top end and then retune the low end. In between. I flew 2 tanks today in between dead sticks and surging RPM. The engine in its current condition will barely get the Tiger off the runrway, it takes a good 50 feet to get airborne.
4) BTW checked the valves (using a 1$ bill) and the gap looks good.
5) The only reason I have stuck with it is YS is closed until next week, Might as well work on it until I ship it out,

Don't know where Scorpionjack and can773 got thier numbers but I think 10-15 thou clearance cold is the norm. Here's a good site for you, Crash!

You better do somemore reading.

Valve clearance is .0015 which is .04 MM If you have yours set to .015 Your way to large. A Dollar bill is about the right size.

Jack is absolutely right. I now have several YS and even the Saito all should have a maximum valve clearence(at cold) at .1mm. I set mine to .05 and the engines run excellent.

Ok, the instructions are a good place to start, which for the 53 state 0-0.1 mm (0-.004" .

Second this is a direct copy of a sentence posted in the site that you gave

"Too much clearance WILL damage both rocker arms and valves, and neither of these components are cheap! (Rocker set ~ $31, Valves between $22 and $26). On engines I own and work on I set the clearance at a minimum of .0015"

That would be 1.5 thou not 15 thou.

I doubt that YS would be sponsoring me if I didnt know how to set the valves

First off let me apologize! While my number was good, my terminology was bad. In the threads I said 15 thou and the number i was referring to was .0015. I guess that's why I'm not a math teacher! Again, sorry about that Scorpionjack and can773.

No I did not, sorry for the slow reply, been working ( )

I sent the 53 back to YS, they are having problems fixing it as well. The repair guys said " I can't get it to run properly". Yeah, no kidding. . YS said probably a quality issue from the factory that it has an air leak somewhere, but they cannot find out where. He said he would need some TIME to fix it . Well I guess some of us are lucky. I spent way too much time on this one.

Central, hold that FZ91 on order!

Just wanted to make sure there was not anything misunderstood about the previous post regarding YS service. So far they have been good about the repair, it is just not a simple fix, of course nothing of mine seems to be a simple fix, :
LOL

YS said they have fixed the problem. The case cover was warped and causing an air leak. Well as I stated above nothing of mine is ever simple to repair. BTW they fixed the problem and did not charge me because the type of problem and it was just under warranty. If you have any engines sitting around you might want to run them to make sure they are good. I had this one for almost a year and if I had not found a home for it I would not have gotten it repaired under warranty even though it was a MFG defect.

Got it back and installed. She runs but when my engine is not running, it pours fuel out of the carb, like a stream, Is this normal? The engine is inverted, but I thought YS would run in any orientation? Any of you running 53's inverted? if so are they running ok and do they leak fuel?
Will the tank location be an issue?
Thanks for the help. The engine runs, but still very rich.

Turn the regulator located on the bottom till it's flush with the case. Also do you have the check valve installed in your fuel line on the vent side? Blow in the check valve and ensure that the direction the sir goes is towards your tank. As well 2 filters 1 on vent side and one on the fuel intake side. This is not mandatory but I've found that even the slightest amount of dirt get's in the regulator it will drive you nuts. Set you tank up like this http://www.probuild-uk.co.uk/factsheets/ys_engines.php As well the way the Engine sheet is that came with the YS is the same as well.

Hope this helps
