It's taking lots of glass!!! With the weather turning south, hit and miss on warm days for epoxy.

Hey Bob,

Merry Christmas n happy holidays to you also.

Your Z-DC-3 is coming along really nice!, what weight cloth and type or resin are you using on this project.

I see you have some sort of hinges on your flap panel, what type r they?

Sam

I'm using 3/4 oz cloth from Thayercraft. In relative terms, under 2.00 a sq yd. Z poxy with alcohol to stick it on. Those fowler hinges were once offered by Hobby Lobby but since discontinued. Bought a batch out N.Y. and I am hoarding them for another project if ever get this one done. Weather playing havoc with epoxy time. Can't get the garage warm enough.

Bob/Gene,

Finally got the maiden in yesterday. Flies like a big trainer. A couple clicks of trim, little down elev/mix with flaps. But you don't need them anyway.

Congrats on maiden AAflyer, she looks great

Z DC3 will be my next scratch built model, it's just one beautiful model and very accurate replication of DC-3s and C-47s once my C130, Arrow and S Connie are done.

Keep up the good work guys

Looking very good, what type of paint are you using. Are you going to seal the pain with flat coat or not. How is Caribou doing now days?

Well, I waited until the Toledo show to pick up my DC-3 landing gear and, wow, am I happy I did that. The mains were show specialed at $340 (vs $566.80 on the Robart site) and the tail wheel strut was ~$55 (vs Robart's $65), making my grand total outlay of $395 rather than $632. A savings of 36% over retail. Nick Ziroli sold the gear, not Robart, who had a booth right next door. I'm still shakin' 'n bakin' over this one! I checked out NZ's new Spitfire while was there - darn nice, to say the least. OK. I've got the engines (Enya VT-240s), the fiberglass nose and cowlings, and the gear. All I need now it the wood and I can get cracking on my dream airplane.

Aircraft was painted with Rustoleum cammo colors. Nothing fancy. The Caribou is now a display in a local shopping mall, flying forever off the ceiling. Got some graphics so it's about time for the maiden except for the weather. Blowing like mad.

Well I flew it. Not in the kindest weather. Flew straight and nice. Too slow on landing. Bent the gear. Broke a prop. Take a little time for repairs and will have a second maiden. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jHC9toWMuE

Except for the landing the flight looked great. Looked like it was a tad windy. Were your flaps down on final approach? I couldn't tell from the video. Also, are you using Twin Sync? I'm wondering if that's a worthwhile investment because a lot of guys are flying twins without it.

I had maybe 5 degrees of flap in it. A lot of small mistakes make an accident. Wind, high approach, flying at me,could not judge airspeed. DOH...... I don't run any thing fancy with twins. Rig it right the first time and it works. Tuned both engines seprately and came out within 200 rpm. Close enough. Always tune to the weak engine. Both however were new on this bird.

Sorry for it on the landing, yes ur right it's not one thing that causes accidents, it's always number of things big or small leading to a accidents. I'm sure it's not that bad as it look in reality and you will have it flying again in next few weeks Bob. Pleas don't shy away from repairing her, it needs to be flying again.....

Hows the repairs coming along? Any chance that video can be found somewhere? The link for it is dead. Can't wait to hear or see the next flight report. I've been considering this project for a long time but the fear of the twins keep me at bay but I absolutely LOVE this aircraft and how it presents itself, nice job! This thread helps my pondering in the right direction.

Thanks
Lom
