Thanks, now I'm glad I waited for a response, almost pulled the trigger too soon!
Are the Taxxas motors not 550's? I would like to stick with 540's. Ideally I would love to go brushless but I'm too scared I might break the gearbox or something else.

Yes, the Titans are 550s and run on 14.8v +, so no good unless you have an EVX2 and two battery packs mounted. Like many people, I did haver that setup for quite a while, but both my TDs have ended up brushless. Actually, as Tamiya gearboxes go, these are definitely one of the strongest, with a bigger, beefier diff than eg a TL01, so you can get away with brushless power. The dogbones will snap, though, if you go nuts or put in too much suspension articulation (e.g. by using long shocks). I have one on a Velineon setup (3500kv), the other on a 70Amp 4811kv motor, and the gearboxes seem to last ok.

Nobody wants a brand new once used 10T brushed esc  Come to think of it I might end up with a brushless system in the end so mayby I should also go that route and skip the silly inbetween upgrades.

So excuse my noob questions but with titans I notice the shafts are longer should I shorten them or space the motors out??

no problem, you will have to shorten them.

Or MUCH easier is just to drill a little hole on the far side of the gearbox. As the shafts are just about 1mm too long to fit inside, you can even cover the hole with electrical tape, as the shaft doesn't stick out. i.e. it is only too long by about the thickness of the plastic.

i dont trust that, especially for me. idk his conditions, but i would be afraid dirt would get in. just as easy to cut it shorter

Fair enough, up to you of course. As I said, I just covered the hole with black insulating tape (obviously making sure the surfaces were clean and dry at the time I applied the tape!) and did not have any problems. The truck went in a lot of dirt and water and got plenty of general abuse and the tape held fine. The tape is flush with the outside surface - i.e. the axle doesn't stick out or anything. But of course, whatever you feel most comfortable with is always the best plan :-) In my case I didn't have anything to hand with which to cut the shafts anyway...

Ok guys, got motors (Titan 550's)  in and everything mounted and put back together.  Getting really excited to see how the newly modded dagger will perform I connect my batteries (7.2v sticks) to the esc (EVX-2 Water proof version) and go to hit the button to turn it on, I get a a flash of a green light and then nothing!  Push the button again and again and agian and nothing, nothing, nothing! I then unplugged everything except batteries to cancel out any chance of a short and still nothing then plug everything back together pushing it a again and got it to flash a couple times and still nothing then just pushed really hard and held it there and it went green to red? Argh push it a couple more times then it came on?? So figured might as well test drive and it was a blast, execpt it seemed laggy of sorts like I had to pull trigger couple times to get it to move. Braking only seemed to work  sometimes,  and then there were times I could get it to work in reverse but not forward?  Turned it off at button tryed turning it back on and again nothing? ****? I have read online these esc's have button issues is that whats going on here? I also noticed when it was working when pulling trigger green light on esc would go out and turn back on when released is that normal? Hope this explains issues enough Im reall confused and frustrated cause I wanna use it!

Thanks guys!

i mean calibrate, but it gets the end points of throttle and brake/reverse.

The transmitter should be adjusted as follows:
1. Set the throttle trim control to the middle “0” setting.

1. Disconnect each of the motor wires between
the EVX-2 and the motors. This is a precaution
to prevent runaway when the speed control is
turned on before it is programmed.
2. Connect two fully charged battery packs to the
EVX-2.
3. Turn on the transmitter (with
the throttle at neutral).
4. Press and hold the EZ-Set
button (A). The LED will first
turn green and then red.
Release the EZ-Set button.
5. When the LED blinks RED ONCE.
Pull the throttle trigger to the
full throttle position and hold it
there (B).
6. When the LED blinks RED TWICE. Push the
throttle trigger to the full reverse and hold it
there (C).
7. When the LED turns solid GREEN, programming is
complete. The LED will continuously shine green
indicating the EVX-2 is on and at neutral (D).
EVX-2 Operation
To operate the speed control and test the programming, place the
vehicle on a stable block or stand so all of the driven wheels are off the
ground. Reconnect the motor wires. Always make sure that objects and
fingers are clear of the wheels.
1. With the transmitter on, press the EZ-Set button for ½ second,
until the LED shines GREEN, then immediately release the button.
This turns on the EVX-2. If you press and release too quickly, you
may hear the steering servos jump but the LED may not stay
on. (Note: If the throttle is not at neutral or if the throttle trim
has been altered, the LED will turn off after one second and the
wheels may begin to drive.)
2. Apply forward throttle. The LED will turn off until full throttle
power is reached. At full throttle, the led will shine GREEN.
3. Move the trigger forward to apply the brakes. Note that braking
control is fully proportional. The LED will turn off until full braking
power is reached. At full brakes, the LED will shine GREEN.
4. Return the throttle trigger to neutral. The LED will shine GREEN.
5. Move the throttle trigger forward again to engage reverse
(Profile #1). The LED will turn off. Once full reverse power is
reached, the LED will shine GREEN.
6. To stop, return the throttle trigger to neutral. Note that there is
no programmed delay when changing from reverse to forward.
Use caution to avoid slamming the speed control from reverse
to forward. On high-traction surfaces, this could result in
transmission or driveline damage.
7. To turn the EVX-2 off, press the EZ-Set button until the green LED
turns off.

Well thats very informative and sounds as if it could be the problem steering was jumping when pushing the button! Thanks I will try all that.

What is the most popular brushless motors used in this truck? What KV rated brushless motor is recommended if I want to keep the gearing standerd?
If you compare these brushless motors to for example a Tamiya Super Stock TZ, what is the torgue difference? The Tamiya TZ 23T has a torgue value of 500 Gram/CM. What is the torgue figure of most 540 sized brushless motors used in this truck.

Lots of questions but I'm sure a lot of people would like to know this besides me
