FLY200 -> UPDATED w/Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/1/2009 4:37 PM)

Just added new 1st place pics at end of string below (5-25-09)...= 5 liters of fuel & 74oz smoke tank!!
(Conversion of 5 liters = 1.32 gallons or 169 ounces fuel.  74oz = 2.18 liters or .578 gallons of smoke oil)

Starting a 2nd Boomerang XL project(Builder Killroy Richardson). Of the many things I love about the BoomerXL, the 10-12 minute flight times(SuperEagle) are one of my favorites. With a Behotec 180 Gold to be installed, I was wanting to know if anyone has taken full advantage of the available space for fuel capacity? Longer smoke time is desired too. I currently have the large tank, taxi tank, & 50oz smoke tank hard mounted in mine.

Besides the already large tank, has anyone surpassed the norm and added more fuel/smoke tank capacity? Post pics.

Thank you[;)]
Fly200 - Afterburner Andy

1st Place:  Fly200 5 liters fuel & 74oz smoke tank
2nd Place Tie: Afterburner Chuck 5 quarts(1.25 gallons) & 79oz smoke
3rd Place: Burt-Rcu; 2 double stacked nalgene sport bottles (not sure how much)

I would have thought i'm the only crazy person to get a second one but it is a heck of a bird, i'm planning on using the same size tank i had in the one Micheal has, I haven't got close to the tank install yet as a matter of fact i'm still at the stage of experimenting with set-ups i want to try with it. Good luck i hope it works out for ya...hey you coulda just bought the one from micheal[:)][:)][:)].

Andy,

Why a second one, did something happen to "The Most Expensive Boomer XL Ever Produced"? [8D]

I'm glad to see you still hangin' in there!

George

Hey George. How are you? I retired the "Rescue Boomer" also known as "The Worlds Most Expensive BoomerangXL" two weeks ago after a rough landing caused the nose to crack. (Oklahoma storm with 20mph direct crosswinds blew in after takeoff) Rather than a fiberglass repair, I decided it had been through enough. LOVING it so much, I bought another one. It's been a flying classroom for me as I have learned so much about the turbine world and all the knowledge required that comes with it. I owe so much of it to you and the Virginia folks. Look what you have cost me....3 jets and two turbines. Ha!!!!!! I really want to keep you up to date George on my new set up. I will repair the "Rescue Boomer Frame" and display in my garage. Or I might stuff and mount it and send it to you. It should be made into a trophy and given as an award each year to someone who really deserves it.....like you for getting my BoomerXL together providing me the opportunity to join the turbine world!!!!! You will always be an MVP in my book along with Frank. I will post a pic of the retirment and post repair in a month or so. I feel the "Rescue Boomer" deserves that since so many of the jet community were privy to its history.

Rosek007....I don't think we are crazy. How many jets are this big and so comfortable to fly anywhere, anytime of day? After we fly our scale military jets, it's so much fun to put the Boomerang XL back up! GL with your new one. Lets keep tabs on our builds.

Aw, shucks![sm=red_smile.gif] [:D]

Thanks for the kind words. As far as stuffing it and sending it back, thanks, but NO THANKS!!! I've seen enough of that XL to last a lifetime.[sm=lol.gif] I'm glad I helped stimulate the economy with your purchases, keep up the good work![sm=thumbup.gif]

George -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/1/2009 9:01 PM)

Andy,

As far as tanks, did you see this or this?

Edgar Perez -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/2/2009 2:23 AM)

My old one.. 4 liter nalgene bottle from McMaster

mugenkidd -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/2/2009 5:07 AM)

Kevin you got another boomer?? What scheme did you get? Can't deny the fact that it's a great plane to fly! Not to many jets can do the entire basic IMAC sequence.

Andy, you could always go with external fuel tanks to extend flight time... May have to be careful with placement though as the boomer xl does sit pretty low to the ground.

FLY200 -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/2/2009 7:11 AM)

George. your first hyper link "this" did not work. The 2nd one did and yes I had seen that split tank. Would love to fit that tank in as a 2nd tank somewhere. Good thoughts! Sweet Avatar by the way! Thank you.

Edgar, we have the same main tank. My taxi tank is also installed for extra security....and I like this a lot since the boom can carry it easily.

Michael, external fuel tanks would be cool, but not sure I want to change up the already draggy airframe even more. Don't worry, I will try and not pass your new Eurosport.[:)]

mugenkidd -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/2/2009 8:09 AM)

It's ok, I hope to be going extremely slow in the EuroSport... somewhere close to zero... like what George's avatar is showing...

Anyway with the 45lbs of thrust I don't think drag will be an issue... blowing the wings off should probalbly be more of a concern[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

Andy,

Sorry, got carried away with cut & paste and had some extra characters in place. I fixed the link, here it is corrected.

George

P.S. Yeah, that's what I'll be trying with the Euro when I get home, but Mug will probably beat me to it.

Nothin fancy, just same old thunderbirds scheme...stick with what works...it won't be built for a while though.

Steve Collins -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/2/2009 9:24 PM)

I have a one gallon tank and a UAT in mine.

I once took of with a nearly full 50 ounce overflow tank on the right wing. Does this count?

Flew the entire flight with that tank on the wing. Took me a while to figure out why the aileron trim had suddenly changed. Landed with the tank still attached to the overflow fitting.

FLY200 -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/4/2009 4:40 AM)

Ahh....Funny about the overflow tank. I can't say I have ever seen that. Glad it got back safely. My canopy blew off on a too fast down part of a loop. It hit the leading edge of my left wing leaving a big crunch in the wing. Was able to bring it in safely.

Back on topic.....George got the link. Surely I can find a way to add some of those options for my needs???

Guess the lack of pics means most have not done anything more than the common install??

FLY200 -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/4/2009 9:08 PM)

I snagged pics from "BoomerXLII" thread. Edgar, after closer inspection, looks like you have two tanks installed totaling 4 liters?

Question: Does the XLII have less room in fuselage due to larger air intakes that protrude into the body?

bcovish -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/4/2009 10:12 PM)

Here is a pic of my Boomer with a 48oz smoke tank.

No, just the big bottle, plus UAT

FLY200 -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/5/2009 3:37 AM)

Thanks Bcovish. I have had two or three XL builders email asking about smoke tank installs and a few others who are watching this thread closely for ideas. You had good smoke time with that set up I bet!

Sorry Edgar....my eyes playing tricks on me.

bcovish -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/5/2009 4:15 AM)

Smoke On!

NICKELUP -> RE: UPDATED w/Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/5/2009 4:41 AM)

Hi guys i just bought a used Boomerang XL2 and i need a fuel tank for it. Would the jet tech drop in one be sufficent enough or is there other options. The previous owner used a plastic fruit punch tank. Also he is got HT 5965 on the AL,EL, and rudder is that sufficent or should i change them to a higher torque servos like jr 8411, or 8611A

trioval00 -> RE: Pics! Who has the LARGEST Fuel payload in their Boomerang XL? (5/5/2009 4:42 AM)

here is a pic of the tank I have installed. 128 oz from Mccmaster Carr $24.00
