brooksc -> what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 3:12 AM)

i just got a volcano t2 2 weeks ago monday...it was dead by the first friday....i followed all the instructions about threadlocking and the breakin etc...it was okay but the front drive shaft has never stayed in right...ive only toppled the truck once.ive been very careful with it the whole time...ive been puttin the drive shaft back in and fixing it more than ive been playing with it! the brake disk was wallowed out from the factory and its never had brakes because the coupler just spins in the disc..the engine was running great..last friday it was acting glitchy going full speed by itself when i was driving it etc...so i changed all the batteries in it..i was just running it around my front yard so it was maybe a 10 foot radius that i was driving it in...i put duracell batteries in it and started it up..i drove it around for a minute and it just went crazy and ran full throttle into a concrete porch...its now basically totalled.. the front end is all messed up..it bent a couple of the rods..broke the front arm holder. bent the bottom plate chassis that everything is bolted to...messed up the bumper...and when it did this the engine started making a high pitched noise and i cant get it to start again so im assuming its fried too...and in doing all that it stripped the spur gear too in a spot...both servos twitch and humwhen i turn the switches on.....im not happy at all with this truck and i think it was defective.. ive emailed the redcat warranty and they havent emailed me back..ive called and left messages and they wont call me back... what do you all think?

robriley -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 3:56 AM)

well, i really have no clue other than maybe there was something in the area that was on the same frequency and caused radio interference?
if you had put a fail safe in the electronics, it might not have taken off on you like it did, but it sounds like something was controlling the truck for you. so even if you put a fail safe in it, it would have still had a signal and took off anyway. the only way a fail safe will work is if the truck looses signal all together, the stock servos are not that good and a radio and servo upgrade is a good idea from the start. the stock ones will last for awhile, but they are not the best.
but i have no idea on the other things going wrong.
i have no idea why the front driveshaft fell out. (you are talking about the shaft that goes from the transmission to the front differential right?) the front and rear driveshafts (from the transmission to the differentials)are supposed to fit in so they won't come out unless you remove the transmission or the differentials. unless yours had the wrong driveshaft installed in the front. i know that my driveshafts will not come out unless i pull the transmission or the differentials out.(i have a volcano sv and i am pretty sure that the t-2 and the sv use the same set up except for the transmission and the clutchbell). if you are talking about the shafts that go from the differential to the wheels, the caster / camber on the front wheels may have needed to be set better.

maybe the high pitch noise that you were hearing was the flywheel rubbing on the brake shoe mounting screw? since you said that the chassis got bent, it could have caused the motor to get moved. the flywheel is very close to the brake shoe adjusting screw (on the sv anyway) and maybe it is rubbing on it. will the motor turn over or is it locked up internally? will the motore just not start anymore? more than likely the spur gear got stipped when the chassis got bent. i have no idea on the brake disk being wollowed out but i would have got ahold of redcat as soon as i saw that problem.
it's sad to hear this because i am very happy with my volcano.

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 4:33 AM)

the drive shaft from trans to the front..i think they call them dog bones on the parts list? ...it seems like its a hair too short..so if you put what i would call the couplers that the ends fit into, all the way on where they are supposed to go the drive shaft is just super loose so it just falls out....when i tried moving the coupler on the trans shaft that also has the brake disc on it foward to make it tighter on the driveshaft the coupler and the shaft kept falling out....
i thought the same thing about something with the same frequency causing interferance but i played with it in the same area all week and had had no problems with that aspect of it? as far as i know there was nothing that couple be would of cause interferance with it but im not positive what all could actually interfere with it......lol

i think the t2's are built a little differently than the sv's....the breakdowns arent the same...not sure what all is different though.
i dont think the chassis getting bent interfered with any thing really all that is bent on it is the very front corner so it just makes the bumper cockeyed a small bit..
im pretty sure the high pitched noise was the engine...if it wasnt i couldnt hear the engine over it..im almost positive it was the engine....the throttle was at the fullest speed it could go..like if a governor goes out on a mower or something (im a small engine mechanic..mowers and weedeaters and such) i dont know much at all about the rc's though....the motor turns over..its not locked up at all...it seems to have okay compression but just wont fire off...
i want to get into and look at the cylinder sleeve just to see but im waiting on word from redcat about warranty before i get into it..
i think the brake disc was just cut a little off at the factory....
when you asked about the noise maybe being the flywheel rubbing on the brake shoe mounting screw it reminded me that that is another problem ive had with this dang tuck!! that mounting screw and plate has been rubbing up agains the gas tank and has almost rubbed a hole in it...

i emailed redcat a week ago about this and ive tried calling but no answer to either...i just resubmitted another warranty claim today..we will see...

robriley -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 12:29 PM)

so on the t-2 the brake disk is on the front side of the trans.? the brake disk on the sv is on the rear of the trans.
the driveshafts should fit in the couplers so there is no way that they could fall out...sounds like the shaft you got is too short. the dogbones are the axle shafts going from the diffs to the wheels, but the driveshafts are essentially the same shape so yeah, they could be called dogbones as well.
man that really sucks that this happened.
let us know what redcat says about all this.

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 5:25 PM)

yep the shafts are basically the same..i dont know if someone maybe installed the wrong one in the front drive shaft place from the factory? the back one fits in pretty snug.
and yea the brake assembly is in front of the trans between the steering servo and gas tank..
im planning on calling today to see if i can find out anything..im not a very patient waiter especially when i submitted the first warranty claim over a week ago with no reply

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 8:17 PM)

here is the reply i just recieved from redcat

"""I am very sorry to hear about all of your troubles. The volcano line is a very solid unit and rarely has any trouble. The front drive cups should have little red o-rings in them to center the dog bones in the cups. Perhaps yours fell out or didn't have them. IF you still have the dog bone i can send you the o-rings to put in the drive cups.

I am not sure what would cause the break disc to wallow out but I will send you another set of breaks.

For the radio issue sounds like there was some radio interference or something like that since you used the truck a few times before the crash i don't thing the radio is bad. I can take 50% off of any parts needed to repair your truck, and if you would like you can send the truck in and I will have the tech go threw it and repair it for you and I can just get a hold of you for payment for parts. That way we can make sure that it is back in proper working order when you get it back."""

im kinda afraid to send it in for repairs because of cost...but if they get it they may just decide to send a whole new one? heres to hoping....
and the little red o rings he was talking about..i never saw them so either they got lost the first time it fell out or they were just not installed...and thats why it fell out..
i dont know..but i told him i wanted to just send it in so it could be gone through by a tech since i had no clue what caused the prob in the first place..

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/4/2009 8:33 PM)

put up some pics of the volcano i think ur making it sound a whole lot worst than it is.... and it will see what ur working with..

robriley -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/5/2009 2:46 AM)

the volcano sv doesn't have the red o-rings in the couplers for the driveshafts....at least mine doesn't.
my driveshafts have never fallen out, and the only way that they will come out is if i pull the transmission completely out, or pull the diffs completey out.

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/5/2009 3:06 AM)

there are ways to adjust them where they don't fall out.. still need pics..

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/5/2009 7:39 PM)

well it doesnt 'look' bad...theres not much to look bad on it..just by looking at it things look ok other than front arm bar holder being busted..i have the drive shaft in there and i did adjust it..so it was in there when it crashed...i know i could replace the broken arms etc on the front that got bent or cracked but since it wont start and it still just sits there and twitters and jitters with the electronics turned on i have no clue where to start other than replacing both servos etc...plus the engine now..
i'll still take a pic of it and put it on here but i dont think that will be of much use...most of my serious problems now is the running of it...or lack thereof...i'll get a pic of it up for u tho....

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/5/2009 7:51 PM)

here are the pictures...

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 2:37 AM)

if u want to send it in i don't think it would cost u more than 100$ bucks to fix it

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 4:46 PM)

do you think that would be including the engine and servos?

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 4:51 PM)

i wouldn't think ur engine would be messed up from a crash but could be possible.. engine would be extra 50 bucks... email Nick send him the pics ask him what he think u might want to take more pictures better can see the damage better

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 5:18 PM)

if you are talking about nick at redcat ive emailed him the last 2 days with no reply.....

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 5:24 PM)

yea well they are on a different time zone too... well email another person..

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 5:26 PM)

and how do you suggest i do that? i dont have a list of redcat employees email addresses.....and yes i know they are on a different time zone..im pretty sure its an hour earlier there..not 48 hours earlier

RCToysNh -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 6:44 PM)

Where did you buy it ?

Talk to your dealer.

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 9:00 PM)

ultimate rc hobby....
i did contact him first...he contacted redcat..they just told him i needed to fill out the warranty form on the website...

i even called nick this morning to ask him what i needed to do to send it in...the told me he would go email me right then when he got off the phone...3 hours later still nothing
i wasnt happy with the truck but im even unhappier with the support...i dont expect an instant response at all but 24 hours should be sufficient shouldnt it?

r\c justin -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 9:22 PM)

24 hrs should be more than enough i know if i had to do it all again i would go with HPI or TRAXXAS... for sho for sho

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/6/2009 10:55 PM)

lol i already got a traxxas tmaxx 3.3 after all the problems i had with the redcat and the support...i just couldnt wait and i was wanting 2 anyways. i was planning on waiting. but decided to just go ahead and get a second one...the weather here has been total crap so i havent even been able to break it in yet, just look at it since monday morning... from the looks of it, it is way better built than the volcano.....i hope they get the volcano fixed for me (just sent it off after calling a second time today) it was a blast to drive... and from the specs it will go faster than the tmaxx... a buddy of mine at work has a the tmaxx 3.3 and he is rough rough rough with it...doesnt do very good maintenance or antyhing and it seems to take a licking and keep on ticking...im not planning on doin what all he does with his but its nice to know its possible...

chevyderek72 -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/7/2009 8:04 AM)

Redcats cars are awesome, and their customer service is top notch. Maybe he got caught up in work because they are busy. I know a lot of times when i talk to him he just says the've been slammed. It sucks you had to switch and pay more money for nothing. But thats how it goes, a beginner breaks it and blames it on the brand. And just to let you know, EVERYTHING has its problems. One guy on here said his buddy crashed his jato, costed 80 bucks. And i bet that was just some front end parts.

Landslide Bill WNY -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/7/2009 2:57 PM)

I agree with top notch service but I beleave some things are made on a Monday and or Friday I had bad luck with a landslide that was made on one of those days. Tho redcat Nick was a big help .

brooksc -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/8/2009 2:44 AM)

thanks for your input chevyderek..but i never said it was a bad quality....just that maybe it as a faulty one from the factory...like he told me there were supposed to be red o rings in the couplers...and there WERENT...and yea im a beginner but im not a blithering idiot......how can their customer service be top notch is 1. i NEVER got a reply from the first warranty claim i emailed them. 2. it took over 48 hours and two phone calls to get a simple answer in what all and how i needed to send the truck in? ...i understand they are a company and they are busy...but i also know it takes about 30 seconds to reply to an email.
when i first got my t2 i was excited and wanted a couple extra bodies..so i called and ordered them...the guy i talked to that day was nice and the service was top notch..inexpensive and fast shipping...

i have to agree with lanslide bill...my car was just made on one of those days...just got a lemmony one....

and another thing chevyderek...if you were actually readin my posts instead of just picking out parts to be a .... about then you would have read that i was going to get another rc truck ANYWAYS...
i dont think the extra money was for nothing either...the tmaxx is built way better than the volcano is..yes the price refects that but peace of mind is priceless....
i cant wait to get my t2 back...if i would have crashed it myself i woulda sucked it up and replaced the parts..i wouldnt have cared what it 'costed' i think the servo or servos went haywire..ive read tons of stuff on here about the stock ones being crappy......

chevyderek72 -> RE: what do you all think? faulty volcano t2 (5/8/2009 3:29 AM)

You cant compare 1/10th scale to 1/8th scale. Get the avalanche and the t maxx and compare. The 1/8th sclales are beasts. Ok so you were gonna get another, but you decided that traxxas was gonna be better and just went that route. But whatever floats your boat man.
