The Zagi Fixx Motor fails in about 3-4 flights!! Is there a replacement that will work better and last longer. I've received no satisfaction from the Zagi company representatives. It wasn't a very good kit does not live up to there reputation. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The motor that comes with the Zagi FIXX is a standard GWS IPS drive. It's unusual for those motors to fail so quickly. They generally will last through several hours of use.

You can purchase just the motor, or the entire gearbox assembly, from http://www.balsapr.com. Look at the spur (big) gear. There should be a letter or number embossed on it. That's the gear ratio you need to buy.

I'm not sure I would replace it with the stock motor. I've been much happier with GWS speed 280 based gearboxes on planes that come with the IPS. The 100 series I believe are the 280's. I haven't flown a Zagi Fixx, but I did see one fly twice at the field. It looked like it was underpowered and flying slower than it really wants too.

I think I would look at a speed 280 based 2.8 (or so) to 1 ratio with a GWS 8 x 6 prop. It would fly much better and the modification to take the motor and rebalance it would be pretty straight forward.

Aeromicro is a good source for all of the needed parts.

Just my two cents worth!

You might try one of the IPS-Dual motor setups, because it doesn't require any modification to the airfram other that trimming the elevons a little. (Bigger prop) One of my buddies did this motor per my suggestion and it went from flying like a Fixx to flying like a 400 X, best flying on 8 x 720s btw..

I tried the dual IPS drive system and it fried with in 1 flight. I ran it on a 3S2P 340shd LiPo battery pack and it seems to not have liked the 11.1 volts. I thought that since the single IPS works with 9.6v that the dual would have no problem with 11.1v but evidently (since I fried both motors at the same time) it does not work. This setup was pulling almost 14 amps at WOT!

Has anyone else used this motor setup succesfully? What prop and battery did you use?

I finally killed my original fixx motor for good recently. I did not want to spend alot to continue flying this plane, and I had been somewhat disappointed in the performance. I ordered the S2 twin IPS motor and two heat sinks. (the heat sink really should be standard on the original motor)

I ordered this from Balsa Products http://www.balsapr.com/
7.2V Twin S2 Power System (IPSD-RXC-2S) Price: $21.88 Quantity: 1 Total: $21.88 GWS Heat Sink IPS-8A (EHS-50) Price: $1.45 Quantity: 2 Total: $2.90
Sub-Total: $24.78

I am using the original 9.6v 270mah battery, original 8x4.3 prop and the original speed controller so, not a huge investment. I had to break the motor mount stick out of the airframe and turn it on it's side. I epoxied this back into the airframe. I added 1/2 oz of lead to the nose and cut away the foam at the tail around the motors to give plenty of cooling. I test flew it in a 20mph wind this weekend and WOW! It flew awesome. I would not even fly the stock system in a 5mph wind previously. The added weight helps with penetration of the wind, and the flight characteristics were amazing. I did not notice much of a drop in duration, although I wasn't checking for this. I would recommend this as a cheap, easy upgrade for the fixx even if you haven't melted down the original single motor yet.

I have been very happy with EPS-300C upgrade on the Fixx. Today, this geared GWS power system is known as an EPS-350C. These motors last for 30-60 flights or more.

The ideal upgrade would be to use the Astro Flight 010 motor direct drive because it lasts forever. This combination of brushless motor, ESC, and 5x5 prop are sold at many places.

For details on my Zagi Fixx upgrades, go here.
