I would think there would have to be an awful lot of current flow for the batts to get that hot.
Check to make sure everything, electronic and mech, is working the way it should.
You may want to ask this in the RC Cars forum.

I'm running a Losi XXT truck and I recently bought an 11x2 mod motor and was running a 23T pinion gear and the stock 84T spur gear. I'm using Deans plugs with a G-10 ESC with the diode attached. I have 2 1500 nicad batteries and 1 2100 nicad. Every time I finish a run, the batteries are so hot I have to pull them out of the car by the wires and lay them on the ground because they'll burn me if I put them in my pocket. Yesterday the (2 week old) 2100 battery got so hot it melted the shrink wrap around the battery. Does anyone know why these batteries are running so hot?
I've also tried stepping the pinion gear down a few teeth to ease off the workload from torque. I've even put my stock motor back in and now that's running hotter than it used to. Any ideas would be helpful.

maybe is the guage wire you are using...
the thinner the guage the more resistance there is and that can build heat. I know what you are going through.. I overheated lots of battery packs in my r/c car days, especially with my 8turn double. Very hard on batteries.

Increase the size of the wire . larger wire has more capacity to supply current. Electricity flows faster and easier through thicker wire.

If the wires aren't getting hot, then increasing the wire size won't help, it may make it worse. It's the batteries that are getting hot, so either the battery resistance has gone up, the intercell connections have increased resistance and are going bad, or you're pulling more amps from the battery with your new setup. I suspect the latter. Is the shrink wrap really melted on the sides of the battery or just around the intercell connections? Again, I suspect the latter. Getting a nicad hot enough to melt heat shrink would probably melt the head to can insulation also, resulting in catasrophic failure (Fire in the hole!!! )
