I'm building a 1\8th Scale Dumas hydroplane.
It's an older model that calls out for a .67 engine. Does anybody have any other suggestions?
Is there a better engine that I can put into my Miller American Hydro?

Thanks

The Miller needs more than that to be a good runner. Here is the short list:
1) Replace all the mahogany framing with aircraft grade birch ply, 1/16th ply for all cross frames except transoms and 1/8th for lengthwise frames
2) As per Advanced builder, replace the rear transom with 1/4 aircraft ply and replace the sponson transom with 1/8th aircraft ply, laminating no less than a 1/8th doubler for the skid fin bracket, though I would go thicker, to either 3/16ths or 1/4
3) Lose the rear radio box. Relocate the radio box to the front and the fuel tank(s) to under the deck around the CG
4) Be sure to cut lightening holes in all underdeck framing to minimize weight
That shoul dbe enough to get you started

Yep ! Hydro Junkie right about the mahogany framing that come with Dumas and replace with aircraft-grade plywood .you can get some good Finland Birch Plywood or Light Plywood at http://www.nationalbalsa.com/hardwood-ply.htm or http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/wppages/domplywood.php

I've watched hydros made with lite ply literally disitegrate while running. If you want to add lots of unneeded weight and glass the hull later to make it stronger so be it. Here is one of the posts from that thread:

I generally use lite ply/1/8" for stations/bulkheads when constructing a scratchbuilt hull. Planking generally is balsa in either 1/16" to 1/8" thickness. Ca'd to the stations as they lay. With this method, you generally will have some areas in the planking that need filled and i usually do so with the new light fillers. Then once the stern and bow blocks are faired in and everything is fair to my likeing, i then will proceed with the fiberglassing stage. Hull sanding/fairing and attachment of the bilge keels or any other items needing sealed in place by the final resin coat stage. Then removal from the building board and ultimately removal of those light ply bulkheads for the most part, except for those that will remain in place. Some people i know use the light ply for superstructure construction and then cover this with styrene(.020 to .040) or aircraft ply(1/64 to 1/32nd inch.). Gives a smooth surface and sharper corners. Hope this helps.

NOTICE THE WORDS PLANKING AND BILGE KEELS, WHICH ARE ONLY USED ON DISPLACEMENT TYPE HULLS AND OCEAN GOING SHIPS, NOT HYDROS

Hydro Junkie and all , Every day (if you are not careful) you learn something new

As a plane freak I can say that liteply is used extensively in the larger planes - often laser-cut or milled as fuselage bits. It is basically thick, light and stiff (enough) but we still chop out the middles of all big bits.

Its also soft enough to be cut easily with a knife

It has been used in boats as the main material - I think there was a plan or two in the last few years. Even if the adhesive is not waterproof, it is no worse than white glue, and both need to be welll sealed and painted.
And We really do live and learn.......What a good day today has turned out to be. Another great service here at RC universe

I agree, lite ply can be used on certain styles of boats, but a hydro isn't one of them. It's the same with luan/doorskin, it's not a suitable material for hydroplanes. What makes a hydro different is that it's strength is in it's skin, not the framework. That being said, the framing needs to be able to take the pounding and vibration from bouncing off the top of the waves and ripples. Lite ply, without glass reinforcement, won't take that kind of abuse for very long before it shatters. By reinforcing the lite ply, you have now added a considerable amount of weight that must be overcome. This is where the aircraft grade ply is much better material. It doesn't require reinforcing, it doesn't have the soft center that must be protected and it will take considerably more abuse than lite ply. For the record, I also have built aircraft and worked with lite ply and balsa, I have also broken parts made from both with little to no effort as well. I'll leave the lite ply and balsa in the air and the ply on the water
