This was, by far, the biggest POS motor OS ever came out with, that I owned. Nothing but a waste of my valuable time trying to get it to run the way it was suppose to.

Could not wait to give this headache motor away.

NEVER, in the hundreds of motors I've had over the years needed as much help as this one did. If you got one that runs....consider yourself lucky.

Very unlike OS to produce such garbage.

And yes, that's how I really feel!

    Gary

I just got mine this past weekend, and have not had a single problem as of yet " knock on wood "!! It started right out of the box, run it in as per the manual, with the exception of using a 16"x6" as I had it on hand. I've run 4 tanks through it without a dead stick. Idles good and transition is good as can be expected on a new motor running rich. So far SO good!!!!!!

My brother and I both have .91's in our Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 60's. Both perform flawlessly and we have been thrilled with them from day one. We did both experience broken muffler bolts. We replaced the bolts with threaded rod from the hardware store and have never touched them again.

We do have a friend that has one in a GP Giles 202 and his has been a considerable amount of trouble. The last time he had it at the field he lost the plane due to a deadstick. He has had many, many deadsticks. This time he didn't luck out.

I believe he has a Pitt's muffler on it and I wonder if that isn't part of his problem.

So far so good (no dead sticks). 3 tanks was used for running in my 91 FX. Yesterday I completed my 5th flight without any problems. Transition is good. I use 20% oil (50/50 Castor & synthetic ) and 10 % nitro with a 14/6 MA. Never ran it with the muffler provided, but with a VMAR Pitts style muffler.

    Hope the bugs stay away.

I am running a 91fx spinning a 16x6 APC prop. Unbelievably good combination with endless power.

Recently had all the troubles everyone else has mentioned but this is after 2 years trouble free zero maintenence flying.

On inspection I found the following problems.

1 - The fill and drain brass tubes that go through the tank bung had both broken off inside the bung and were floating around inside the tank (I'd never had or heard of this before)

2 - 2 tiny holes in my feed fuel line.

    3 - Blocked filter

4 - muck on the end of the needle

    5 - Very old plug.

I fixed all these things in one go and the engine is now back to it's old self so a massive thumbs up from me, especially as I bought the engine second hand for £50. BARGAIN!!!!!

    OS 91FX

Mine has run about 20 hrs in a Cap 232, side mounted with a bisson pitts muffler. It has always been a great running engine, starts 1st back flick 90% of the time running 20% Klotz supertechniplate and 80% methanol (yes no nitro). After trying a few props I mostly ran an APC 16x6 with good results. Another good prop I found worked well was a Zinger 15x8. So I guess my vote is in support of this engine. Reliable and great power.

This is a no brainer of an engine.
    Those having problems:
    Reduce nitro to 10% max.
    Get a decent plug.
Make sure you have enough cooling.

I'm amazed how many people cut a big hole in the front of a cowl and a small hole at the rear.
Outlet size = 3x inlet size!
Radial cowl? The one with a great big gaping hole in the front? Yep same applies... 3 x larger out let! How do you do that? Make in inlet smaller by building a baffle plate.
I have lost count how many times I've seen people having problems with radial cowls.

    Sum up.
This is a straight forward, no nonsense standard engine!
If it ain't working, don't blame OS.

So true. Ask any control line speed competitor, They know cowl formulae. Also with no nitro , I ran an Enya #3 plug.

I was wondering when this was coming. :

A no brainer? boy now thats a smart statement. I wonder how many cells it took to think that one up.

Its obvious bla bla is nothing but bla bla bla....... as I have heard so many times in other threads, just because your engine is running as you think it should, does not mean everyone else's is. As far as cowls go mine is not in a cowl. And I WILL BLAME OS!! I have never had an engine that has given me so much crap and whats up with the 10%, if the engine was running as it should, 15% should work just fine as it has in all my other OS engines, fuel has nothing to do with it.

All that babble about this being a straight forward, no nonsense standard engine, is just a waste of good oxygen.

    Blackie

I'm with you on this Blackie. For me, exactly the same cowl installation before and after problems were sorted out. And the problems were repeatable with or without cowl.

As I have said previously (may be in another thread), overheating was at most only a minor issue for my 91FX, and if it was an issue before, then I still have it as I have not altered the cowl in any way what so ever since first installing the engine, yet now the engine runs fine.

Therefore cowling/heating was not the issue. QED.

    ....with "AirGar's" .91 fx....what a dog.... :

He had it in a Cermark F-16....the motor would start and
run ok....but it was gutless....and seemed to run hot.
That thing didn't have enough power to pull your hat off.
The plane flew like it had a bucket of cement tied to
the back of it....he tried a Mac's mini tuned pipe on it.

More money wasted on the pipe. We propped it all the way
down to a 13-6....and the darned thing simply wouldn't
turn up, or make any power....

....he finally gave up, and sold the motor....

Do O.S really produce an engine that has this much range in quality???

It does seem very strange that soooo many people are experienceing similar problems including me as I said in an earlier reply. But mine were all all down to other factors.

I was told that the 91 I purchased was sold because of the poor running where as with me it is brilliant.

Maybe the needs of this engine are much more critical than usual and all of us that have so called good ones are simply lucky with our set up.

I would love to do a test and put one of the bad ones in my model set up as mine is and see what happens and vice versa. Can someone please do this if the chance arrises in their club..

Well the OS 91FX saga continues, heres a taly update.
    Runs out of box: 24
    Fixed it to run: 8
    Hate it: 19
    50/50: 3

The total number of engines voted on is up to 54. As a percent 44% ran out of the box and 50% didnt (6% balance is 50/50). Its interesting to note that experienced modelers have problems along with people new to the hobby. That tells me that its not nessasarily the experience level that determines if the engine can be made to work but the engine itself, its quality and/or other unknowns.
I also feel that we have now come to expect a certain level of increased quality in RC products, which is a normal consumer response as both technology and prices increase. As an example what was considered a quality ARF a few years ago wont sell in todays market. I mention this as I wonder if OS, which
has overall good to excellent quality in the past, may have not recognized this consumer trend and is resting on its past or even thinking its high brand loyality will allow it to ride out this issue.
In the OS engine forum I asked for the E-mail for the OS headquarters in Japan and was told by Bax that they are aware of the problem and they get copied on the Threads. If that is the case wouldnt one expect to hear something in return? Lets hope so.

I just ordered one, so i hope i love it, but have the FX61 with the same air leak problems. It is under the brass nut that hold the fuel line from the main tank. I use plumbers tape to seal the nut, but you have to be careful not to plug the fuel hole on the brass nut. Try this and i think a lot of your in the air engine problems will be solved. Take Care!

I just installed a K&B remote needle valve on the firewall....and it seems to have fixed it.

    Haven't flown it yet.

Runs ok on the ground though.
