Well I decided something had to be done about the rear dampers. Mine leak terribly, and the torsion bar is in my opinion useless. I started to dig through some parts, and then I noticed the "Cam Lock Springs" sitting in my Buggy Champ box. So I thought to myself... what the heck.

A little stiff, I could cut down a coil or two... but they work surprisingly well.

After receiving a replacement Sand Scorcher body kit I decided to spray my beater shell with truck bed liner. It has proven to be very durable, and doesn't look terrible in my opinion. I through on the Brat wheels this evening, and I really like the stance.

Is it common for an SRB to have a terrible turning radius?

I think it may be time to upgrade the steering servo. I weighed my Scorcher... 5.6lbs w/battery, and it turns like an aircraft carrier.

I removed the Futaba steering servo and replaced it with a Hitec HS-645MG model. The stock rear shocks were also removed, and the scorcher was fitted with Tamiya 53155 coil-overs.

I am sure the new shocks work better.. ha ha! (but probably slightly less scale.. !)

Thanks! It runs great when the shocks aren't bone dry
Does anyone know if mounting them upside down actually helps the leakage? I tried it breifly but they just filled up with dirt.
Either way I'll be swapping them out for RC Channel SRB shocks soon enough

Yeah, after an hour or so of driving they're just pogo sticks. They haven't really changed much since 1979, so guess I can't blame them

The o-rings might have been damaged during assembly? Their design are similar to many of the Tamiya shocks and they shouldn't leak so badly.

No, they look pretty clean, and the kit came with a couple extras I can try if they are damaged. I think the main fault is that the parts inside just float around, that might leave some unwanted gaps at times

The front shocks keep their oil reasonably well, but the rear ones do a lot more work and they end up dry pretty fast.

I tried grumppee's method of cutting down the cam lock springs a bit and putting them in the rear shocks, and it works pretty well. The back end will consistently hold its own weight now and I don't have to worry about the oil. Max travel is reduced a little but it's not too bad for light running

The Tamiya 53155 coil-overs will rub on the stock rear wheels. Unless you plan on running Brat wheels like I do.

I made a stop at the local Hobby store this afternoon. I decided to purchase a stiffer spring set for the rear coil overs. Unfortunately I could not get a set of Tamiya springs, however I did find a "generic" on-road medium spring and thought I would try them, $5 why not...

I replaced the lower spring perch with a larger unit I had in my parts box to accommodate the wider spring. Under full compression the lower spring perch will make slight contact with the rear wheel, but the added stiffness will most likely eliminate the issue in most cases. I am happy with the result. No more sagging in the rear from the weight of the buggy. I also removed the torsion bar...

I just happen to look up at my Hornet on the shelf above my PC and had the strangest thought... rear Hornet shocks up front on the SRB. Hmmm...

I had to improvise with the lower spring perch. I used the inner oil damper ring (You know, the circular plastic piece with one, two, or three holes), some black rubber o-rings and wouldn't you know it... they fit.

Nice! What motor/ESC are you running in it?

Tamiya Sport Tuned and Tamiya ESC at the moment.

I corrected the rear shock and wheel contact under full compression with a set of Hornet rear wheel hubs. These push the rear wheels outward, providing the necessary clearance for the Tamiya dampers.
