Mate, a kart has a lot wider track than this.
quote:

ORIGINAL: QSPSB2

I'm really not to concerned about having any axle steer issues... The majority of the weight will be in the front end.... My front tires will also be the same diameter as the rear,,, So combined with proper camber i shouldn't have any issues.... But if i do run into an axle steer problem.. All i need to do is let off the gas in the rurns a little.... Many kart's have an axle steer problem running the live axles and thats what most do.... As do any car running a live axle.... To be quite honest the only time a live axle wont cause a axle steer problem is if it breaks traction...

Here is an interesting site regarding suspention geometry as well as many other interesting specs...
http://www.auto-ware.com/software/rsg/rsg.htm

A kart needs the driver to use it's weight to pick the inside wheel up to be able to corner fast, sore sholder.

It must be your location guys. Sorry it's not working for you..

Well i now have most of the 3rd member welded up... I still need to build the pinion support for the rear of the shaft... That will sport a roller bearing. & build the front bearing retainer plate... Other than that it's down hill from here... Except a tad more welding and grinding... Here are a few shots of it..... What a bugger this thing was to build.... I just love fabricating challenges like this..lol

The 3RD member is now nearly done... I still need to do a little welding/grinding.... I will be doing a test video on it tomorrow and if all goes well I'll be ready to finish up the welding/grinding on it... I will then focus on finishing up all the welds on the sheet metal rear end... Then build & attach all the needed brackets....

Here are a few shots on the 3RD member pinion support...

Thats just getting better and better mate, what are you using for your input shaft? an off the shelf item or a fabricated piece?

Wow!!! That is really cool. Can you still email your pics? I can PM you my email if you can. Could you post a pic of the rear end next to something to compare the size to?

The size is relative to a 4 inch grinder.

Thanks for the complements guys.... Well i did 2 test videos on it today.... Was not happy at all... First off was my nut drive being slightly bent... But it still worked ok for the test... I will use a new one from here on out... Second... Had serious tooth pattern wear using Coast side/Drive Side .035'' pinion shim, Back lash @ .005'' Then came test 2... Using .029'' pinion shim, back lash @ .0055'' The pattern is now higher but still not correct... And it's noisy as all get up.... Poor gears. lol.lol.   My next tests will consist of.. .029 pinion shim, back lash @ .004'' Or perhaps .031'' pinion shim, back lash @ .005''... Once i get my new gears and axle/pinion stock i will need to perform these steps once again.... Gotta love it...

Troppo,,, I'm going with a solid 3/8'' drive shaft.... My brother inlaw is a machinest and he is going ballance it for me & thread the ends as needed... I'm not sure if i will fabricate the U joints myself or not yet... I may just purchase them...

Dirty_Vinylpusher... thanks bud..

Traxxaspede... PM me your email address and I'll send you some shots... Do you want pics of the rear end and chassis or what??? i have over 4 thousand pictures i've taken of all the steps... I will need to make you a zip file i suppose.... Here are a few shots of it next tyo a 20oz pepsi bottle, And a CD... I took a few of me holding it as well... She is a tad heavy if i m ust say... Around 9lbs or so..

Cuemando... them gears are from a 7'' angle grinder... Not the 4'' one as you stated..   http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46237

I uploade the videos if you want to check them out..     http://www.youtube.com/user/QSPSB2

I think you might want to get some REAL grinder internals 'cause those look like some very small & cheap 7in bits. Ive got a 4in with gears that size but I use it for grinding. De  um   dee  um..Dewalt thats it! You can't go past yellow! Harbour tools sounds and looks like SCA tools that we have here in OZ! Cheap and nasty.

I will be really disappointed if the motor you plan on putting in this thing has less than 12hp. Where is the link to your dream motor for this beretta and where are the plans for the body, fibreglass, resin, aluminum or carbon fibre? Like this one?

I suppse i should make this clear to you as well... I'm just using these H/F gears as a test.... I ordered a few sets of BOSCH gears to check out, And may wind up using... I thought i posted some pics of the gears here but i guess not... Perhaps in drewcrew6s thread...And yes the engine i'm going to build is rated @12 hp... But can be modified to produce up to 20 hp or so...  It's a ken hurst 1/3 scale blown V8
http://www.nvbackflow.com/engines/

I know a guy that has built one with his own supercharger design and it puts out 23 hp.... So with a little luck i will have him do most of the needed machine work on it... As for the body... Well as i said in this thread... It's going to be an all metal body.... there are now plans to date on it... I will use sheet metal and form it all by hand.... I have many pictures from any angles of the Beretta to work with... And if all else fails i'll just take measurements from my real drag car Beretta that I'm also building to work from...

The first picture is the gears in it now... And the others i've ordered... And last but not least... The BEAST of the real Beretta I'm building....

Well i ordered some shims for the rear end... I recieved an email today from eReplacementparts with my tracking number on the gears so i should have them within a few days... I will then get it all setup with the new gears & shims for more test..... I'll get her fingered out !!!

So i desided to build the upper/lower rear shock mounts while i'm waiting on the parts... I now have the upper/lower shock mounts done and shocks installed... I need to make some minor adjustments but they work great... I'll be building/ welding on the spring retainers here soon... Now i'm going to build the torision bar and brackets and get her mounted...

Here's a few shots of it...

cuemando... Yeah Harbour Freight is the same as Super Cheap here only bigger and better, any aussie bloke would have a field day in there, check out their site
harborfreight. com

QSPSB2 ...... Your work is a real inspiration to me. I have plans to build a front engined dragster when i get back into work and your diff build has given me the thought of doing the same for it (hope you dont mind if i pinch your design when i do).
I`m following your build on a couple of sites and look forward to each load of pics so thanks for the inspiration.
Where did you get the shocks? Are they RC parts or some small hydraulic struts? I`m guessing they arent home made.
A metal body is going to be a real challenge, some pretty complex shaping, will you be going with a three piece body (left and right sides and third piece being all other pieces, welded together) or are you going the whole hog and trying a single piece body? The sort of shaping will need a couple of specialist tools like a mini E-wheel and maybe even a tiny pullmax type machine. The diff and chassis has fascinated me but now i cant wait for the body work.
Cheers mate
Troppo

troppo... Thank you for the complements... I'm glad i have inspired you bud.... NO job yet i take it?? That sucks !!... My shocks are lift supports. I just drilled a hole in the lower chamber and released the nitrogen gas... I'm going to attempt to fill them with shock oil... Don't know what weight yet or even if it will work.. I will weld the hole up then once filled... I don't think i will really need to do this though... I'm going to relly on the springs for support...

Don't know yet what i'm going to do/need to do ! Here is where i got mine..   http://www.autopartsbylou.com/
Select,, Select Extended Length drop down menu... They have just about any size anyone would ever need... YES.... They are bullet proof..

NO.. I don't mind if you want to build a diff like mine... GO FOR IT !! I've hade many emails about my rear end design... Many ask me if it's ok if they build one, And many want me to build them one.... Needless to say... I have no plans on building another one any time soon... I will be selling a print on it in a few months though....  YES... The body will be a major challenge bud.... The body is going to be made from sheet metal... With a removeable one piece fron end... Removeable deck lid... And operational doors... Also removeable... The Roof/Rockers/Cowl/Pillers/Deck support will be welded together as one piece.. then welded to the chassis... I have thought about making the body as a one piece removeable body... BUT ! It's not really realistic... As you may have notuced the Beretta and all componets is being built just like the real ones are...   I have access to a brake press as many other forming tools/machines so forming the body should go fairly good.... I'll experement on some scrap a few times to get the hang of it.... I've fabricated many things over the years but fabracating a body on this scall is a first for me..... It's going to be a while before i get started on the body... I'm thinking around the first of 2010 or so.... I'm in no hurry to get this thing built..... I want it to be a sweet looking ride when done... As we both know.... Patience=Perfection !!

Check you PMs.. Thanks again for the complements

Rutt Roo.... Can't send PM... Keep getting message..

Thanks Mudgy.... It is tough.... Extremely...   Well i suppose i am mad buddy.... I've been called worse.... Yaa Know.... Gotta love that feeling of building something from scratch.....  How's the dragster coming along? Get that pipe YET ?!!

Well i now have the wisbone & brackets done and welded in.. I still need to do more welding and clean up the welds but other than that... DONE !!

I will be building the Torsion bar next.... It's a bit complicated so it's going to take a while to build.... It's going to be the spring loaded type.....

Anyhow... Here is a few shots of the wishbone/brackets....

Wow.

You wouldn't get away with leaving all that metal bare like that over here on the salty-aired coast though...
It would go brown in a couple of days....

I don't think it would go brown in your home though, Would it?  Hope not, Because i'm sure you have bare metal brackets/etc in all your electronics... Just waiting to short out !!!!!!

Well the torsion bar is now built & tack welded in... I had a change of mind on the design... It's just a floater torsion bar rather than the spring loaded type as i stated.... My new gears are suppose to arive tomorrow, So i will be doing some test on them this weekend sometime... I'm now going to build the new wheelie bars and brackets and get them welded in... Then on to the tube ends..

Here are a few shots of the torsion bar...

Thanks!

Well i received one set of my new gears today... The other two sets are still on back order.... Anyway... These things are just plain AWESOME!!!
I can't believe the quality of them.... Very nice.... As you will notice in these shots of them they are larger than them gears i had in the rear end... I took this into consideration when i designed this rear end & third member as well.... Al i will need to do to make these work is machine a aluminum adapter plate that mounts from the third member to the base plate... NO BIGGIE!!! You may also notice they are a right angle cut gear... As the ones that where in it are left angle cut gears. Thats why it ran more smoothly in reverse... Go figure I'll be doing some test videos on them soon..
