Well guys NO recent updates on the Beretta build... Sorry! However i did increase the size of my little work area it's currently 14'x14'x6' I plan on having a new garage/workshop built next year here at the house.. I'm currently building the Beretta in our old basement.. Now my daughters house.. I'm a still waiting on the casting furnace burner and have ordered the furnace refractory material i need, I'm going with one with a temp range of 3900 degree so i can also cast parts in iron, brass, copper, etc,, Refractory material site> http://www.michiganrefractory.com/?gclid=CNn_kYWe4p0CFQ4MDQodjCkWDg

Here are a few shots of my new little work area..

Well i now have the majority of the fuel cell built for the Beretta.. I still need to address all the welds and build the front / rear mounting brackets.. once completed i will preform a few more leak test on it.. Then I'll take it to the shop and spray it... More views on my site @ http://www.quarterscaleprostreetberetta.com/Fuel-Cell.html

Hey guys, just wanted to stop in and update you all on what's been going on around here.. Well first off... Our computers we're hacked but we have since resolved the issue.. DVP> I've had all sorts of issues with this free forum on my site.. needles to say i wouldn't count on it going back online anytime soon... lol.. Perhaps after the holidays I'll look into a new forum server.. It's not like your missing anything anyways... As for the Beretta project goes.. Hmm where should i start... Well to be honest i haven't done much to it lately,, I have the majority of the welds on the rear end done since i posted here last... Other than that.. ZIP.... I mentioned in a recent post i planed on casting a few 1/4 scale parts.. Rear end etc etc etc... We after doing a ton of research on the casting process i have changed my mind.. Mostly because all the necessary machining work that's involved to produce a half way decent looking product... Not to mention casting are weak and can break easily,,, So I've have since decided to machine the parts from solid billet aluminum instead.. It will be much easier and alot stronger than a casted part would be... I am installing all new ball screws and XYZ stepper motors on the mill, and installing a new stepper motor on the indexing fixture as a 4th axis... I'm also looking into a few new CAD/CAM programs that will work with my console panel electronics...The G540 4 axis package on the top is the one I'm installing.. http://www.kelinginc.net/CNCNEMA23G540Package.html

As many of you know here... I'm a very busy guy and don't have much free time these days... Not to mention.. We are now repairing cars again and we are swamped with jobs.. I'm working 14 hr days again and will be for some time... With the winter months drawing near, we will be even busier... Love the $ But miss the free time and family..

Later guys

Well guy's not a whole lot of any updates on the Beretta build... I am planing on machining a new rear end for it from 6061 and many other parts in the future as in.. all the front suspension parts.. Hubs,Steering wheel & column, handles, shut release, shifter, etc... I sold my old mill because i kept having issues with the stepper motors/driver... So needles to say i bought me a new one... I am currently converting it over to CNC,, I also built a new enclosure for the mill... Hopefully i will have it all converted within a few months and turning out precise parts soon after... I also plan on making a wide variety of other RC parts... All made from various grades of aluminum... I won't go into detail on that at the moment... But keep your eyes on my site in a few months... I think there will be many here wanting to purchase some hop up parts for your ride... Enough said!!

Here are a few shots of the mill as it looks to date.

Well nearly two years later and I'm actually getting back to the Beretta... My mill is now CNC'd and I made the first part of many for the Beretta... It's a kwik shift type shifter... I'm going to redo the majority of the parts on the Beretta in various grades of materials... Fuel Cell / Struts / Rear Shocks Etc Etc... And last but not least... The HEMI

I won't go into it all now but this thread will be quite active over the next few months...I haven't had a chance to take any stills of the shifter yet but i did put together a video on machining it... And yes i know my endmill is worn... It's a screamer!!

Thanks

Well i now have the shifter handle machined. I did take videos of each operation but they were accidently formated from our camcorder prior to uploading them to our media browser.. So needless to say there history... Anyhow... I just did a simple conture whith an outside offset, with a 0.04365 finish allowance... did it with an 3/16 2 flute end mill going 0.010 per pass at 15 ipm... All in all it came out fairly well... My finish allowance is what was a bit hard to get quite right, Thats because i used an 3/16 end mill.. I'll use an 1/8 or smaller from here on out for jobs that require such detail.. I orderd quite a few new end mills so this wont be an issue in the future... I had to pretty much address all the grips on the hande with various files.. the oll 3/16 end mill dosn't like to do an 1/8 end mill detail.. go figure!

I'll be machining the front change handle and rear cable retainer bracket and shifter support bracket next.. There are a few more shots of it on my site

Thanks guys..

Well the little shifter handle is now done & installed.. I polish the shifter housing and little handle after all... I'll put a killer mirror finish on it prior to istalling it... I'll be machining the rear cable retainer bracket and shifter mounting bracket here soon. I'm also going to machine the 1/4 x 0.430 spacers here soon...

There are a few more shots of it as well as a video on my site @ http://www.quarterscaleprostreetberetta.com/CNC-Machined-R-C-Parts.html

that looks pretty cool mate. How are you going to keep the mirror finish?

Clear coat?
Have you thought about anodizing some of the parts maybe?

I cant believe you made the ol' mill into a CNC machine; now thats dedication to the cause.
All I did was cut, file, sand (and machine only when necessary)

I shouldn't have an issue preserving the mirror finish... I don't think automotive based clear coat would adhere to well to an almost non porous surface to well... as a matter a fact.. I know it wouldn't... Once i get it and all the beretta parts done I'll go back and address all the parts.. I'll most likely wet sand them with.. 600 then 800 then 1000 then 1500 then 2000 then polish them with brown buffing compound.. AKA rouge.. As far as anodizing goes... Once i start getting a stock of 1/4 scale parts machined I am going to have some of them anodized in various colors... Perhaps even a few clear anodized...

I got a ton of CAD programs i need to address my friend! Yeah the CNC conversion went quite well actually... I made all the neccessary mounting brackets and such myself... My friend Hoss machined the XYZ ball screws for me on his lathe... So far it's working quite well.. I was very surprized that its as precise as it is... I did quite a few test on it and it comes in with a 0.0002 on the repeatability test... Not to shaby for a home based CNC conversion... Yeah mudgy i am very dedicated to getting this mill and all the attachments done so i can get all these '' and other '' cnc parts machined... I'll be designing the 4 th axis lathe attachment brackets here soon hopefully.. I got a ton of jobs to do that will need to be turned... I'll most likely make custom cnc wheels for the beretta as well.. and steering wheel, And the list goes on and on...

Thanks again!

The Beretta shifter is now done. other than istalling the button head cap screws and shifter cable... they have been ordered and is on its way... Below are a few pics of it... There are a few more pics/video on it on my site... The last few pics are just a mock up view of it in the Beretta with the old drive shaft tunnel from my first Beretta build that failed.. LOL It's actually about an inch taller than it should be..

The ProMod rearend is next on the list....

Then onto the IMEH!!

Well the promod type rearend is on hold for the time being... I've got all the materials and tooling to machine it.. But.. I decided to get going on the beretta body... I'm really getting tired of looking at a rolling chassis.. lol... As i mentioned before the body and infrastructure will be made from cold roll steel... I've got the material and prints done and I'm going to be starting on it soon... It's going to be quite challenging if i do say so myself... I did put together a few videos and pics on it on my site... Sorry for the poor quality guys... I got a feeling the girls have been messing with our camcorder again... Anyhow... It will have a one piece removable front end.. with a removable hood... Removable doors, Removable deck lid / trunk, Removable spoiler and chute supports... I may even make some power windows for it... I haven't looked around for any mini 12 volt motors yet but I'm sure there out there.. I'll have about an inch of space in the door to mount one... Perhaps a R/V window crank would work as well... Mabye mount a motor and a super small gear reduction unit within the door panel ehh!!

http://www.quarterscaleprostreetberetta.com/Body.html

Here are a few shots of the drawings i did on it... I'll be drawing up the front / rear view here shortly..

Yeah... It's going to be quite challenging thats for sure... Well i did manage to get the inner rocker panel brace welded in and a mock up piece for the P/S door seal lip.. It will actually only protrude about 3/16'' or so.. It's not done.. I just rough cut it and bent it where i think it needs bent.. Once i get it filled I'll trace around it and dulpicate it... Then clamp them together and run the file around both pieces at once..

Hopefully this thing will start looking like a car soon.

Update!

I now have the upper door Infrastructure in place and tack welded.. as well as the roof.. I'll be making the front/rear glass channels next.. then on to the roof supports... It's actually going together quite well... I've done a ton of real car fabricating over the years but nothing on this scale.. Hmmm... I suppose it would be done the same way ehh?

Anywhoo.. Here are a few shots of it as it looks now..
