I have enjoyed watching you guys build for the last couple of months. I am nearing the covering phase on my aircraft when I noticed that the landing gear blocks were very loose. Without much effort I pulled them right out of the wing. Perhaps I mixed the epoxy poorly. When re-installing them, I ran a couple of coats of fiberglass over the mounts and the surrounding wing. Has anyone else figured out a way to strengthen this area of the aircraft?

Bob

Did you use 5-minute epoxy or 30-minute? 30-minute is generally stronger than 5-minute and should always be used for high stress areas. You can also reinforce the underside of the landing gear blocks with tri-stock.

wzak, sorry to hear of your troubles. Don't rush to catch up on my account. When you are ready go ahead with your covering. I have yet to cover the top of my wing, and still have not gotten the white Ultracote. I will continue covering the wing when you have caught up.

I used 30 minute epoxy on the gear blocks. If the blocks rip out at this point, they are going to take some sheeting with them. So if they do come out, I will add the re-enforcement then. Can't do much more now since I glassed the blocks in. I've built a lot of kits, and I haven't had this problem before.

The glassing should work. Did the epoxy hold the 2nd time around? Would love to see some photos.

Very good forum you folks have going.

I would have to agree with types of Epoxy to use. Always use the longest curing epoxy as then the epoxy has time to seep into the wood to form a stronger bond. I know that this can be a pain but patience is a virtue. (this is comin' from a 28 year old, not an old geezer )

I just finished building my Super Sportster and Maiden'ed it last Friday. Wow quite the change in flying characteristics from the Nexstar. This is my second plane and first tail dragger. Lots of power in the little bugger (OS .46 FX). I had this thing flying circles on 2 clicks above idle the whole time and landed like a duck on a pond. What a graceful little plane. Can't wait to start performing stunts with it

Question for you all. Tail wheel. I have heard from my brother that the tail wheel should be taken off and put an after market spring loaded tail wheel on the body. Is this worth the extra work, or just be gentle on the landing (no 3 pointers)?

Fly it for a while. When you need to, then replace it.

Here are the photos. I am going with a Purple and Yellow with red trim color scheme. You will notice that the ailerons aren't stock. I wanted some flaps so I built oversized control surfaces. Take a look at the pilot. My mother in law wanted to paint him, so I let her. He's kinda cute <wink wink>. He looks a little interesting, but I am going to put him in there anyway! Shoud get a good chuckle at the field. The wing has no dihedral. I couln't figure out how to fit the retracts in so I will have to go with fixed gear. The flaps are for aerobatics more than anything.

Hmmm. Not much activity here lately. So, I wll post some pics of my Super Sportster. The only thing left is the fuel tank and the spinner. Looks like a trip to the hobby shop is in order! I do believe this will be my last kit build for a while.

Gorgeous plane multicasting. What size kit is that beauty? What is it powered with?
I promised wzak I would not finish covering my wing until he caught up but apparently his personal problems is not allowing him to finish this thread so I will not be waiting any longer, I will be doing the top of the wing sometime tomorrow and get this plane finished.

I sincerily hope you are well wzak.

That is the Super Sportster 40. I actually started watching this thread before I started building it. I Started the kit during the July 4 weekend. It ispowered by a Rossi 40 with a tuned pipe. I will use a 12.25 X 3.75 prop which turned about 13.5 K on the bench. I used MonoKote Plum Purple and Yellow. The red is called Missle Red. My goal was to finish this week. I hope to fly it this weekend. I am off for the summer, But we start back on August 17. Once School starts up, I don't know how much free time I will have.

What engine are you putting in your SS40?

shd3920 Sorry for the long pause in the build, had a lot of personal things going on.

Belly pan covered, will start the bottom covering tomorrow morning, the bottom will get a 8”X20” white strip and 3” white stars. Shd3920 are you going to use any of the decals that came with the plane?

I have a Magnum XLS-46 in mine. wzak, good to hear all is OK. Yes I am planning on using the decals.

I am going to try to get the top covered if I can today, I forgot about a prior family committment made for today. I am also helping a friend build a Mini Telemaster that we are bashing (making more solid with sheeted wing, fuselage and tail feathers) converting it from electric to .10 glow.

Been awhile but I have finally finished covering the top of the wing. All I need to do now is permanently . . .
1) attach ailerons, servos and horns
2) install main landing gears and wheel pants
3) apply decals on top of wing
4) and finally balance CG

Will post photos sometime tomorrow.

Hope everything is well with you wzak, did you ever finish your Sportster?

Had a small difficulty hinging the ailerons but they are on. Absent-mindedly (is that a word? ) glued them to the wrong side of the wing and had to trim the left aileron to get it to fit. But all looks fine, wheel pants and servos are on. Just have to attach the horns and connect the pushrods. Test the servos for buzzing, and check CG. Should have pics tomorrow.

wzak, starting to worry about you. Please email me so we can talk, I am concerned for you.

I am in the process of learning the basics with a micro foam Citabria http://www.hobbyzone.com/rc-planes-parkzone-micro-citabria-rtf.htm and it is going real slow. wzak and myself were looking for a plane we could build together so we decided on the Super Sportster because we liked the way it looked. Hopefully by spring I will find somebody to maiden it for me so I can see it fly, but I will be nowhere near ready for it.

I understand. Do you have a good club that can help you out? Take it one step at a time.

Yes there is a nearby club less than ten miles away but through the years the activity there has dwindled way down to the point where they discontinued the funflies they used to have when I was a kid.

I hate to spend the cash on the membership fees and AMA insurance just to have no instructors at the field when I go. I have to rely on others giving me rides and even that is getting hard to do, I don't know too many friends with transportation willing to get all the equipment there for me safely.

P.S: Did you get that beauty up and flying yet multicasting?

Mine has not flown yet. I ran into a problem with the engine. Then I ran out of time. I am a teacher, and now it is back to school time. I hope to fly it during the labor day weekend. But first I have to solve the engine problem. I am pertty sur it is a fuel delivery problem. It's really a bummer. I was hoping to have it airborne before we went back to school.

I don't knwo what to tell you about the field issues. AMA is definately an important part of our hobby. Have you tried to contact the club? I have a student that I coordinate with so we can make sure we are both at the field together. Flying has really dropped off in the last couple of years. The economy has not been kind.

My GP Super Sportster 40 MKII has finally been completed.
Covering has been harder than I anticipated but I am satisfied with the end result.

Here is the finished project . . .

That looks great! I like the yellow striping. It really pops against the black background.

Looks nice. A little too much checkerboard for my taste but it's your plane and not mine so it needs to please you and not me. Well done.
