Looking to build a freakishly fast large scale, primarily for on road but I want the vehicle itself to be an off road model. I'm planning on using the 29.5cc Trevor Simpson motor, not sure what vehicle yet. I don't really want to spend more than $4000 US, any suggestions on a vehicle platform to start with? I'm leaning towards the MCD Race Runner Ultimate.

I say, go with the FG Baja, it's proven big time by me and everyone else down here in Miami. If built correctly, no largescale on-road will touch you.

What is it about the Baja that makes it a top choice for the speed guys? I've always wondered.

the thing is, I've had an onroad, and it's just too squirrly, too narrow, always used to spin-out. Built for top speed just like my baja and it never was as fast. I guess in my opinion, it behaves like a 1/8th scale buggy set-up for speed. handles great and very versatle just like a jato. You can check out my vids on you tube to see for yourself. It's a great platform to work with.

Wouldn't I get the same benefits out of an MCD Racerunner though? I know what you mean about the on roads being squirrly.

How about a Contrast Fuego '09? http://www.contrast-racing.com//index.php?id=430

They are very fast even with a 23cc engine due to the low weight (under 20 pounds ready to go) and have already proved successful in national and international off road race meetings this year.

They have been raced on road (using FG/PMT/GRP front F1 tyres/wheels) and are as fast as the touring cars (sedans) but far easier to drive.

Anyway here's a photo of one of three that were raced on road here last weekend -

They are so much faster on road than any of the 4WD models - there is no way that with my 4WD Race Runner or slightly lighter Rally car that I could have got close to lap times they were doing.

Hmmm, I'll check out the Fuego 09. Are there any decent US dealers?

The great thing about the FG platforms was touched on in another thread recently by ballistic lunacy. The drivetrain is super efficient, has no unnecessary gears, and no right angles. The Baja is a light car naturally as well, so logically, they really rip.

Sheo why don't you get an FG baja 4wd competition. Best of both worlds. Sure, it won't be as fast as the 2wd but it will still be very very fast.

how fast do you want sheo??? personally i'd go with the baja 5b and a 2 speed transmision. that way you can have 50 mph and the stock gearing torque... i know it's not the best platform but i love the idea and the sound of the new 2-speed...

I have too many HPI Bajas, bored of them. I do see the efficiency in the FG geartrain, far fewer moving parts than the MCD one.

Go with the FG Baja and call it a day. 4000 will get you more than what you want. I personally have only about 2200 on my baja but thats with a stock motor. Its all in the gearing, wheels and pipe. I also own a sportline though and I have to disagree with MiamiJato but its also in the mid 80s. It was at first a little hard to handle but a little setting up and it works great. I think the main issue between the sportline and the baja is the pipes that are available for both. When I run the same exact gearing on my baja and on my SL, they Baja is faster on top end but I have a Mielke pipe on the SL and a Jetpro on the Baja. I recently aquired an FG BigPower pipe for the SL and it worked exactly the same as the Mielke (good thing it was only 20 buck from fleabay). This is the only pipe I could adapt on the baja, so I did. The baja was exactly as fast as the SL with the same gearing, so that leads me to believe, its all in the pipe. The thing with the pipes is that my Mielke pipe was 550 and the jetpro was 180, so that would help make your mind up really quick as to which decision to make. I guess Im fortunate enough to be able to own 3 of the platforms being discussed on there, so if you want "freakishly fast" speed, stay away from the HPI.

I guess in short, if you want to build and mean onroad with an offroad background, go with the baja or the marder. Get that TS you mentioned, a jetpro marder pipe and gearing and youre on your way.

If your looking to set up something real fast from a 5th scale, your best bet would be either the Contrast Fuego 09 edition or the FG Baja.
Yes, the fuego is abit lighter then the FG, but the price tag is far between.

Are you looking for something for drag racing? or just high speed runs?
The MCD has tons of gear ratio to play with, but the weight difference is a big factor.

Foxy, I thought he was looking for something to go " freakishly fast " ???
That is not the large scale to do it, there are so many other options at almost half the price....
You dont need to spend 2k to do it either.

I think he just wanted something that would do 60 and be cool as hell. Mission accomplished.

The build thread is in the General Discussion Forum.

Yeah, I went with the FG 4x4. Obviously it's not the fastest thing out there for the money, but it's a good mix of a speed and downright coolness

Still have to finish assembling it though, been so busy with other stuff

You'll be happy with the Fg 4x4. In the long run you might be more happier with 4wd off roading, than all out top speed. The Fg 4x4 is no slug with the right motor in it.

The FG 4WD is the way to go. My friend has the comp and I've picked up a roller and modified it. With this and my Cleon I have the best of both.

Also having owned a HPI Baja once I agree with a previous post, you get bored. So many have them and then are a pain to work on.

i cant see why people use anything other than 23cc for onroads....29cc is not for onroad, bigger piston =less rpm.i used my old 27.2cc raceported in my onroad and was just too raw low down but over all top end was prob even a little less than my 23cc zenoah.

i think with a 29cc esp motor it will just cause too much traction problems low down.

a stock 23cc will have up to 2500rpm higher than a stock 26cc

where the 26cc = more power in an offroad is combined with  the big tyres and gearing, then the 26cc shows its low down grunt.

my opinion any 23cc ported would be mental in an onroad....my fg evo i use a standard 23cc zenoah and i have unbelievable power in it,more than enough.

fg evo comp with zenoah 23cc fastest for onroad.......end of story in my opinion

well thats my view.
