spiteful, that's quite a distinctive piece of art you have there. With all the other P-51s flying around it shouldn't be to hard to keep track of yours.

jake, just a little report on my newest DX5e and my main two demonstration planes. Good news, flawless performance, the last flight of the Mustang and all three flights of the Corsair today required absolutely zero transmitter trim changes. The F4U had marks in the battery compartment that made it easy to get the CG correct when switching between a 2200mAh and 1000mAh batteries - no trim changes needed.

Except for a lot more ROG take off and landing practice with Marine's Dream, my main practice plane will be the GUNFIGHTER. Two more fighters from now and I may be buying yet one more DX5e and testing it like I have my latest one.

Gotta run.

DX5e PHENOMENA

Fortunately, both planes bound to my newest DX5e survived intact from today's CAP. Binding additional planes has brought out some inconsistencies and maybe was a factor in two (2) confidence shaking experiences.

It turns out that the DX5e switch positions for my AR6100 equipped plane is identical to the GUNFIGHTER - so much for my previously mentioned theory. The AR6100 seemed to demonstrate some "glitching" on my first of two flights - I am eventually going to replace the sparking brushed motor in this plane with a powerful "inrunner" brushless motor. Fighter power to weight ratios have spoiled me.

Okay, I tried to precisely duplicate the conditions that were present when for no apparent reason when I tried to throttle up the P-51 nothing happened! Finally, after moving control levers and the motor trim adjustment, the motor finally came to life and performed normally.

After a surprising 22.5 minute flight with a lot of time way up in the thermals I got a little concerned about the possibility of running the battery down too far, brought her down, noticed that there was still a safe amount of power, made a few practice landing approaches and finally landed. The last time I used this stock 1300mAh on a very hot day the battery only lasted 10 minutes!

The really neat thing about this cloudy darker day than I prefer to fly on is that I had very little problem with disorientation like I do with the F4U and sometimes with the Spitfire. Either there is something about the Mustang or maybe a gain in flying experience is improving my disorientation problems under such conditions

Okay, the motor did the very same thing again on the second flight. The transmitter battery voltage had dropped one light down from full charge when I finally got around to flying the GUNFIGHTER, but everything else worked perfectly, and when the motor finally decided to run, the second flight went off without a hitch. Except for geographical location, after duplicating identical conditions, the motor failure phenomena could not be duplicated again no mater what I did. Yes, I am now a little more open to a transmitter upgrade at some point in the future - but I am just a little bit suspicious about this and other a bit too "coincidental" (?) experiences with our Chinese made electronics.

I checked the "calibration" of my "altimeter" today by hanging the P-51 in a soccer goal so I could easily see the wing span and then paced off 450 and 600 feet. Sure enough, my little finger nail works perfectly to get a good approximation of altitude. Yes, during the time I was enjoying riding the thermals I forgot about altitude recommendations. I estimate at least 700 feet high - nobody but me noticed so I think we are okay.

I hope everybody else is enjoying their stallions as much as I am mine.

Jake, thanks for your post. At the moment I am trying to recover from the shock of learning about Sinai destroying his Spitfire as reported on the Spit thread. We have enjoyed his pictures and the fun he as been having for quite some time. It has sort'a been like losing one of my own. However, it's been inspirational to see you and other P-51 pilots bounce back from your own tragedies, especially the equipment caused crashes.

Depending upon impending circumstances, I may be checking with the electronics expertise on the next thread url for information that might be useful in helping me get my mind around some of the latest anomalies I have experienced. So far, nothing "really dangerous" (?), just some strange phenomena. For example, I was checking for the "quick RF recovery" technology designed into updated Spektrum equipment and ran into some inconsistent behavior. Most of the time when I would turn off the transmitter and then turn it back on a few seconds later, the receiver would come back on blinking in a few seconds. Every now and then the receiver would cause the aileron servo on my Spit (the oldest AR500 besides the one in my F4U) to pulse slightly back and forth when I turned the transmitter on, and the receiver would not fully reconnect.
My thoughts on the Spektrum incidents...
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8852579/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

Thanks again, and I hope even more flyers will see how much fun sharing experiences can be as you and some others are doing.

Happy Flying!

I bin and dun it ... flew my Mustang today for the first time. All went well, I'm pleased to report, after spending loads of time straightening out the warp in the port wing (see http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8780849/mpage_7/key_/tm.htm#) It's nearly straight now, although that aileron is curved up in its centre and the starboard aileron is curved down in its centre. The plane needed quite a lot of right trim on the Tx's ailerons channel for straight flight hands-off.

What I noticed, compared to my hopped up Super Cub (see earlier in this thread if you're interested), was less power so the climb rate was quite leisurely but more responsive to the roll controls. Also the smaller size and colour scheme against a "brooding clouds" sky made it harder for me to keep oriented.

Anyway, that's three batteries worth (1700 mA), three landings, and safely home in one piece. And it was quite windy today, too, with plenty of gusts that blew the Cub around much more than the Mustang.

For what it's worth, the radio gear is Futaba 2.4 gHz, with zero glitches on the ground or in the air ... so far. The same gear is in the Super Cub, and used by quite a few guys at the club, who between them have had no problems (except when they haven't installed the receiver aerials like the book tells 'em to - 90 degree angle and good separation seem to be essential).

Roll on next decent day when I've time to get out there

Viragord, congratulations! Your feat is especially neat the way you were able to successfully fly even with warps to deal with. I have tried to deliberately stall and spin the GUNFIGHTER at a safe altitude and have never succeeded - probably would need to push the CG dangerously further back to "succeed." I really love this plane and am sure you will also.

jake, just a little follow up good news on Spektrum. Eight (8) receivers are now bound to my newest DX5e and every receiver system works and reconnects perfectly after turning the transmitter off then back on except for the one in my Spit as indicated in my last post. I can't decide what to do about about the Spitter especially since I mainly enjoy it as a static piece of historic/science art that rarely gets flown.

KEEP 'EM FLYING!

ANOTHER REASON TO NOT BECOME AN ELECTRONICS ENGINEER!

Okay, after church today I though it would be nice if my original stock RTF Corsair transmitter could be made to bind and reconnect to the AR500 in my Spitfire in a way that it would not do on my newest DX5e yesterday. I was unable to even get a bind. In the past this original transmitter has performed flawlessly with my Spit.

So, in desperation I rebound it to my new DX5e and PRESTO! It worked perfectly as all the rest of my receivers!

I GOTTA HAVE A BREAK!!!

TWO BIG Honors!!!

#1 honor- After being the first of 4 guys at SEFF to get to fly this P-51, I finally got one for my birthday thanks to the wife & brother. I would have bought one sooner, but was told to wait.

My birthday was August 4th, but we did the party the Saturday before. Sunday I put 6 flights on it, and 3 more a few days later. Below are pics of the new paint job I did, (Hell-er Bust).

#2 honor- As a member of the 352nd FG Association, I posted pics of my new bird at the 352nd FG forums. Joe Noah, the founder of the Preddy Memorial Foundation and nephew of George Preddy (Top Mustang ACE of WWII http://www.aviation-history.com/airmen/preddy.htm), has asked me to make Cripes A Mighty (4th) out of a PZ P-51 BL. He's sending a check to get it all together, and it will be displayed at the North Carolina Air Museum.

BTW, this plane RULES!!!!

MESSAGE TO DAVID EICHSTADT, PARK ZONE: More Bind N Fly! For what
quote:

ORIGINAL: David Eichstedt

quote:

ORIGINAL: astro1111

Really to David Eichstedt, WildBlueWander brings up a good point that I'm sure you can't answer but...

Is Parkzone working on another beauty in time for Christmas?????

Yep, and the wait won't be much longer for our announcement.

Just keep your eyes open over the next few weeks.

Reply to David Eichstedt: More BNF's, get it?! What I want and need out of this hobby is to get in the air with a minimum of fuss. BNF's meet my need: I've got 2 Corsairs, the P-51D, the T-28, the Vapor, and the Blade mCX. That's six out of 20 model memory on my DX7, so I'm counting on you to fill in all the blanks. With that said, please don't keep us in suspense; what is the new model you'll be announcing? Don't worry, we'll keep it a secret and we'll tell everybody we tell to keep it a secret.

In a previous message I mentioned seeing a full page ad for Horizon’s line of BNF planes.  All of the current models are there.  In the bottom right hand corner of the photo is what I thought I had remembered as the back half of a plane.

I checked the magazine again last night and I was wrong, the photo shows the left wing tip of a plane with WWII German markings.

Now I’m even more confident it’s an ME-109.

This attached photo IS NOT from the magazine ad.  It is a cut and paste from an ME109 photo.  However, if anyone has seen the ad, compare the two.

BINGO !!!!

Dr. thank you for those 109 urls! Since ordering my very own Messerschmitt from the hobby shop yesterday I have really become emotionally imprinted on that beautiful PZ Bf-109G.

Those beautiful big 2.5-2.75 inch wheels, etc. should make landings very practical, especially with flaps. I can hardly wait!

Whiz, great looking flying artwork. I can't get your url to work for me. No big deal since this is not unusual for my system. It would be nice to be able to see what you have there though.

Okay, Spektrum - unless somebody comes up with a better explanation I will assume that "occasional new technology glitches are inevitable." Recently just after plugging in my Spad's 6100E the elevator refused to work very much like what I experienced with the throttle as recently reported on the GUNFIGHTER. As reported with the P-51 the "problem" cleared up within seconds.

YES, I WILL BE THE HUN IN THE SUN SOON!!! YOU HAPLESS MUSTANG DRIVERS ARE NOT GOING TO EVEN KNOW WHAT HIT YOU!

Pretty simple to install, comes in a tricycle set. Used GWS wheels and a dubro plastic tail wheel. The retracts are mounted to 1/4"spruce blocks 2" long using 2-56 bolts and blind nuts. Added weight is about 90g. Removed the old motor and added a turnigy 3536 brushless motor with a 40amp esc. The first link is for the retracts and the second is the motor upgrade.

Hi Guys, I'm new to this thread.   If you want another option for retracts for your P-51, look at  the Phase 3, P-40, in the Sept. issue of Backyard Flyer, or at www.hobbypeople.net.   Looks like a neat set of electric retracts for $20.00.   It's a similar sized airplane as well.
I don't mean to hi-jack your work idigrc2... Hope this is useful.  Randy

He's sending a check to get it all together, and it will be displayed at the North Carolina Air Museum.

BTW, this plane RULES!!!!

Hi there,

Very nice work. Did you make your own decals or you use the kits? I am going to customize mine too and I don't know if I should make water transfers or not. Dai

A few months back I bought one of the first P-51BL's. On one of the first few flights with my new plane it went dead stick hitting the ground. For the most part it was destroyed. After my own testing I determined that the likely problem was a faulty AR500 receiver.

I sent the receiver to Horizon and after some testing of their own they did in fact verify a faulty receiver. Today, when I got home, what did I find?

A brand new receiver and replacement frame courtesy of Horizon.

I would like to publicly thank Matt, Nathan, Jeff and Daniel of Horizon. The never once tired of answering my emails, were always professional and courteous and always treated my concern as if it was of great importance.

I recently got back into flying planes and Horizon's excellent customer service has made me feel very lucky indeed to be back at it.

I now own six Parkzone planes and as soon as the E-flite P-40 is out it will be seven!

THANKS HORIZON!!!!!!!!
