Hello, with this being my first post let me start with saying thanks to you guys I have started anew after some 20 years of being away from the rc field. I am back with much to learn.I recieved a world models zero that needed abit of tlc..ok alot of tlc and some retracts and the whole rc thing kinda snowballed...now I need some input. I picked up a top flite P51 60 kit thinking it would be nice to finally build a  mustang.my questions are as follows. would the O.s. 91 max engine work well for this bird?second how do you feel about the durability of the included engine mount? third how  would you re inforce  the wings for the retract  mounts. and last what other modifications,or  improvements would you recomend for  this bird. thanks in advance   Tim

Sorry but can't help you with your questions but just wanted to say welcome back. I too came back after a 15 year absence. I read these forum questions and answers everyday and have learned a lot about the new electronics available now that were not around 15 years ago. The advancements that have been made is incredible. Read these forums to catch up on things. You will be glad you did. See ya around. Dave.

The 91 will be okay. The trick to the Top Flite kits is work work hard at keeping them light weight. They will get heavy fast. As for the retracts, just build them as per plans and add some triangle stock in key places to help hold the mounting rails. As for the engine mount, if it is the 2 piece Great Planes mount, it will be just fine. Good Luck, Dave

I built this and the sea fury kit and both are just fine as built. the adjustable engiine mount it comes with is a none issue, I have at least 3 and never had a problem with them.
Try to build it light, all tf kits are heavy. The .91 will fly it ok. I'd go for the 1.08 but I don't think it's available anymore, I recommend a 4-stroke 1.2.  I've found all their war birds could use more power
The retract rails will hold up just fine. If your worried about it reinforce the ribs with triangle stock and light fiberglass and epoxy

I got a ST 75 in my TF p47, it flies just fine, it's a warbird, not an aerobat, so the 91 max will be just fine, the TF kits all build heavy but the airfoil in the wings and the built in washout keeps them very stable, so don't worry about it, all will be fine.

79 pages of information on the TF Mustang http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2886581/tm.htm well worth reading.

the mount is fine I have a OS120 4stroke in my TF P-47 its plenty strong,I also have a OS91 in my TF Spitfire I am using the provided mounts in both planes,I bolted the engines in with through bolts with nuts instead of tapping the mount with threads just for security

the 91 2stroke will pull the mustang around with authority,it flys fine with a 91-120 4stroke or 61-91 2stroke as recomended by TF, depending on weight.

like planebuilder66 said work on building it light, these TF planes build up weight fast easy on the glue and think about weight reduction, no need to go crazy with heavy details on a 60 size plane, it just makes it harder to fly.

thanks for the input guys! I feel alot better about the engine mount and retract mounts now. the fuse is comming along alot faster  then I expected. I will get the engine mount on it tonite and start on the upper cowl when I locate a spinner..and the retract parts hopefully I can get the from the classifieds.. isnt it kinda crazy how some of these things just  kind of fall together? first the kit then an engine and a decent radio??all on the same weekend?? my 8 y/old daughter says god just wants me to fly again just on a smaller  scale..   Tim

Steel:

I picked up a partially build TF P51 kit and am in the finishing process.  Two suggestions I'd make, but they may be too late if you've got most of the fuselage done:

1) Use a metal clevis on the elevator torgue rod/pushrod junction.  I lost a T34 when the pin on a plastic clevis/metal torque rod sheared off.

2) I'm not thrilled with the way the plans set up the rudder/tail wheel control system.  While I'm sure it works fine in practice (and it's too late to change mine), I think I'd install a two separate pushrods, one directy to the rudder, the other for the tail wheel.  You could still run these off a single servo.  This would give you a little more control over how much the tail wheel swivels when taxiing.

Redfox, all the zero needs would be some struts for the gear. I dont care for the springs.. so I am in the process of finding a set for both the mustang and the zero. and I need to patch a small hole in the horizontal stabilizer, then after i get some trainer time in I will give it a shot.. Fred thanks for the input I dont care for the tail wheel setup either, I chose to beef it up some and decided to keep it simple . but the next mustang will be a "B" model .   Tim
