I have a question regarding a Traxxas transmitter and receiver that is designed for an rc stadium truck. Can I use this system with servos of other brands in airplanes?

If That system is on the 75Mhz band for surface use only (cars, boats etc). Aircraft must use the 72 Mhz band or the 50, 53Mhz ham bands if you hold the ham certificate.

The only exception is if the Radio is on the 27Mhz band which is a shared aircraft/surface band. Still not a good idea surface units may or may not have quite the range of an air unit.

You should be able to use other brands of servos, but if it is on 75Mhz, it is illegal for aircraft use in North America (as John already stated). Other countries use different frequencies, but they too use seperate surface and aircraft frequencies.

If it is on 27Mhz you could legally use it, but it isn't recommended. Besides, a gun-style radio is very inappropriate for aircraft control. :thumbdown

That is good news that I can use brands of servos that are not the same brand as the receiver.

I understand that the 27 MHz frequency for my car is not alloted for airplanes and that the range will be poor, but other than that, how come a piston grip would be undesirable for airplanes?

Thanks

Pistol grips don't have enough controls for an airplane. The pistol generally only has steering and gas. For a plane you need Throttle, Aileron, Elevator, and Rudder. You could probably do it with a simple trainer which only has throttle and rudder but those aren't exactly fun for more than 2 flights =) Get a Zaggi or other inexpensive electric and a three channel radio. That's about as simple as you can get, and still want to fly it.
