I got the plans off ebay for a coast guard patrol boat 52.5 inches long.  I would like to keep it simple and power it with one motor. Does anyone have a motor prop combination suggestion, also where could I get the coast guard graphics  the logo and orange stripes. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I may have bought the same plans.... I was thinking of building mine as a retrieval boat for my gassers.... I was looking into a power wheels motor and battery setup since I was in need of torque over speed... or twin 540s....   As far as graphics you can take a pic to a vinyl company with a plotter and they can make any decal you want....  I'm excited to recieve my plans and get to it!  Looking forward to seeing what you decide on!! Good luck! Dave

DJ Lapalme I just checked ebay  and none are listed at this time.  The seller I bought from is thomasr6977.  you can check  and see if he lists more in the future. If not I could copy mine and send them to you. I just won them yesterday so it will be a few days before I get them.

I dont know what the scale is. The listing only said it is 52.5 inches long. After further research I believe it is a utility  not a patrol boat. I would post a picture but I am really computer challenged.

Hey wayne, I think i figured my running gear out.  I have about 4 electric radiator fan motors... I have one that has a broken mounting tab, so I stripped it down, I have a no motor limit speed control (novak atom) and a novak reciever.  After checking  the specs for this speed control I found it capable of transfering necessary  current.  I was thinking no real high speed with plenty of power to push my gassers in when needed. I was thinking of a 12v power.... whatcha think?

Dave did you get your plans  yet? I got mine today Not going to be an easy build. After about 2 hours of research  I have decided on my powering method I am going with a Johnson 970 motor, a pro boat 12 v speed control 14 in shaft and a 50mm three blade prop, not looking for speed.  It is a utility boat.

Ur in Minnesota, he's in Indiana, I'm in Arizona...So I hope to get mine tommorow or wednesday, Yes!!  How do the plans look?  Why does the build look difficult?  I'm gonna look into your drive system because I'm not fully familiar with your chosen gear, But Good!  I look forward to watching your progress....   What battery are you looking at?  I was looking AGM 12v 14ah battery for a power wheelchair.... 70.00 at batteries plus...  Other input is welcomed and appreciated!!!  Dave

Dave The plans have a lot of text, but the majority of it deals with the gas motor. There are only three pages of parts drawings.  The drawings are 3/16 to 1 in. The best   I can figure with my old  pea brain it is  14.5 inches wide at the widest point.  The cabin  drawing looks like it is guess your best.  I am going to try the johnson motor direct.  If that doesnt work I will use Dumas gears.  The original boat had a lot of  plywood, I am going to use 1/4 Balsa. I am going to sheet it with 1/8 balsa , in stead of fiberglass I am going to use 1/16 ply. I am going to use 2 2.2 AH gel cell 12v batteries.  Should give a decent amount of run time.  There is enough room in this thing to do about anything you want to.
Hope you get your plans tomorrow. Wayne

Hi Guys,

With 52,5" a fanmotor from a radiator is a good choice.

I would position it two bulkheads further forward to get a much better (less steep) propshaft angle, seeing how flat the rear part of the hull is, this will improve the handling at full speed.

I added a few pics of my fanmotor, modified, with brush- and cancooling, intended for a 43,3" MTB, running on 24 cells.

Regards, Jan.

Hey Pompebled, Nice cooling setup, what kind of speed and run time do you get out of her?

Hey Jan you peaked my interest with that motor. A couple of questions do you know how much amperage it draws, also what did it come out of?  Thanks Wayne

Wayne, rad fan motors don't pull more than 35 amps,  And the initial spike in apperage is at initial energization and levels out once the motor is operating,  So the 12 esc u were looking at will be suffecient for this style of motor.... if you go to your local vehicle dismantler and get any 12 volt radiator fan motor or hvac blower motors work well too. I have a few on the shelf.... We could work somthing out if ya'd like

The motor came from a scrapyard out of a french car, don't remember the make, but that's not important, as these motors are basically all the same; designed to turn a 10" fan in front of the car radiator.

It has an Ø 8mm shaft which is often left(!) treaded, which I had milled down to 5 mm to accept standard couplers.

The housing was fully closed, I opened it to get access to the brushes to add cooling pipes and added slots in the front and endbell to reduce weight and improve airflow.

Stall current (with a cloth and pliers to slow the motor down) was around 40A, tests with a 40 mm X-prop (coarse pitch) in my testtank emptied it in a matter of seconds, drawing 10-12 A.

The hull isn't finished yet, but runtime should be 10-20 minutes on 24 NiMH 4200, with the occasional speedrun on full throttle (prolonged runs would be frowned upon by members with smaller boats...)
As the hull has two steps, it runs very light, so maybe I'll get more runtime, time will tell...
It's a semi scale build (one large motor in stead of two smaller ones, for efficiency and runtime, larger prop), so 25 mp/h will be quite sufficient, more will cause severe handling issues due to the air being drawn under the hull by the steps, leaving the rudder standing in a pocket of water and air, having the boat without a working rudder at that speed isn't nice...

Regards, Jan.
