Hi all,

Many years ago in the air training corps, I was learning to fly full size. One of the gliders we flew was the L13 blanik.

Now that I am older and flying RC, I would like as a long term project, to build one. Ideally around the 4 metre mark.

Does anyone know of plans or other scale plans that could be scaled up?

Thanks

Steve

Bob Aberle published a very basic 2 m span stand-off scale version of the Blanik L13 during the 70s (73 or 74?) in Flying Models Magazine. Far from true scale, the plan calls for balsa slab sides with large tri-stock to permit rounding the corners to simulate the oval fuse cross-section. I can't remember if the plan showed ailerons or was set up for rudder/elevator control. The plan should stiill be available. If you are interested, I can look up the issue and plan number in their plans catalog.

Interesting post to read as I take a break from scratch building a 1/6th scale Blanik L-13 that I intend to bring to the Nats next month (if I finish it!). I have drawn rather rough plans scaled up from a 1/48th scale plastic model kit.

This size is small enough to winch launch without help. I can't get a good grip on a plane any larger. Yes, I know bigger flies better, but it also flies less often!

Here is a link to a source for 1/5th scale plans ( about 3M) that appear to be from RC Model Builder in 1981.

Good luck. Its a great looking plane!

Thanks for the replys. I have sent off an email to GliderNet and hope to get some details in reply.

Flyredplanes, It is great to see somebody building the blanik, I wish you the best with it, any chance you can post a photo of the construction

Scott, If you could get those details easily, that would be great, I guess with any plan, I can scale up and down, as well as add ailerons and airbrakes as required.

Marcelo, If I get any response from GliderNet I'll pass it on to you as well.

I know that Moki produces a Blanik L13 at I think 3.3 metres, but it is a bit pricey, and I would like the satisfaction of scratch building the Blanik.

Thanks

Lunns

Put me down for a Mucha Standard if you have one. You caqn email me direct at vincent@cwgsy.net. I know of a couple of other guys also interested in Polish gliders. If ou can send a list I can put them on the website I run for the
Southampton Soaring Society which specialises only in scale gliders.

The Flying Models plan by Bob Aberle for the Blanik L13 is plan number CF481 from Carstens Publications. It appeared in the August 1978 issue of Flying Models Magazine. Specs: 72 in span, 2 channels. Built up construction. Search under Carstens Publications and look for plans department to find their current address and phone. The plan sold for $8.00 in their catalog. Could easily be modified for ailerons and enlarged a little. But, there are more true-scale plans available if one wants to build a really big model.

Hi Mirek,

Can you post details here, as there seems to be quite a number of people interested.

Ideally I am interested in approx 4metre span L13 but a 3 metre would still be a good size, My club aeortows and that would be the realistic minimum size.

Cheers

Lunns.

Hi Guys,

I have just ordered (today) a set of plans for a 1/5 scale blanik L-13 from Bill Northrop. (Ex editor of Model Builder)

These plans will include the assembly instructions as from the original article in the plans.

The model as shown in the magazine uses Rudder, elevator, ailerons, spoilers and optional flaps. Add aerotow release and it will be a great glider.

Regards

Steve

I just dug out my copy of the Model Builder plans you mentioned. Seems well designed although I never built off of them. Still on my wish list for the future though! Now I've just got to dig out the article.
