Guys have done very well with a zenoah 20cc... so no issues with any 20cc gas engine...
It is ALL in the setup my man....all in the setup....

If you want good smoke, run the tube through the muffler and then back in, to preheat the oil...
Then, have the brass tubing crimped completly off
Then dremel a small spot with a thin cutoff disk...

This will give you a very small fine mist of oil....which is key to good smoke

I think a 20cc gasser on this plane would be cool; just don't like having to hack up the cowl for a muffler. The narrow, sexy lines of the cowl and fuse work against you there....

on another note, found my GP aluminum mount was cracked at the front where the motor mounts directly, so I replaced the mount and decided to try another motor I had: a Gforce 50-55 600kv from Value Hobby. Had been running a 50-65 410kv Turnigy motor, but it's pretty heavy at 14.6oz (may have contributed to the cracked motor mount). The smaller motor is 11.95oz; had to drop from a 16x8 APC to a 14x7. New motor is still pulling 75A/1600W, but at a higher rpm. She really howls now at full throttle! Only one flight so far, but pullout from hover seemed as good, if not better. Just have to run my throttle a little higher on the scale, as the low end thrust isn't the same...

Doing the Finishing touches on mine....
Canopy, throws, last adjustments to cowl...

Went with the saito 1.25...
I used a SS Flex tube, and relocated the muffler to come out the bottom...
Even so...I had to hack up the cowl....Seems Unavoidable if you run the engine on a SIDE mount...

I tried inverted, but what a PITA that is....The tank is too high...
Can easily flood the engine, and the Kickbacks are Brutal... as it busted up a brand new Xoar 16in prop...
I should have been using a APC to start with, as they are much more durable...

The Balancing stand= It dents up the bottom of the plane....(Should have known better)
Yes I am a bit of a prude, in this area...I do not like my planes all dented up...No matter where the location.

I will convert the saito to gas eventually, but for know, I just want to fly....
I do understand the draw to use Volts to run these....
No mess, No motor maintinence, no cowl hacking. ect ect...

will have pictures when I get the camera going....
It is a sharp looking aircraft...
I have never flown a biplane so it will be interesting...

You know you can! I have been flying this plane, over 150 flights with this combo. Yes the muffler sticks through the cowl, but the weight is the same as a Saito 125. I think I am the first to do this and would never go any other way! Not to be mean, but you have been thinking about this for a while, time to suck it up and do it, you won’t regret it!!

i guess i am wrong, cause i thought that gas enjine is way heavier. like 25% heavier then the saito 125, have i misread the stats?

An update for you all!...

I had everything completed...and my SS flex pipe ripped...
Welded it up...10min running....Rip...
Tack weld and used Silver solder...Rip (in the areas ) where no solder
Soldered the WHOLE flex pipe....Okay...no ripping but....5oz with the muffler!...
I also had the bottom cover that had a hole for the mufled part of exhuast to come out that had some silicone tubing around the
edge to give support and cut vibration... this wasn't enough apparently

I am a-bit bummed, as that 45% Silver solder AINT cheap....
I am tempted to melt off the silver solder and re-use on some other project....
I am not going to put all that weight on this plane...
7lb 10oz (including the 5oz soldered up flex pipe/muffler)....Not good!
I could cut at least 3 oz off it... It all adds up guys!
I also have a Hitec telemetry with 2- temp sensors. Th is doesn't weight much at all..but still in there!

That is the same weight at the DLE20...and I don't want to be at that weight...unless I have a 20cc gas 2-stroke in it!

It looks really nice, having the muffler come out the bottom like a pattern plane, but what a PITA...

I realize now, why the pattern guys use a solid pipe/header to there mufflers...

I am learning guys...as I have never done it before, and wanted to try...

Lesson 1-Do not try to weld up that ultra thin flex pipe... as the ripples make a huge H.A.
Lesson 2-Do not use a Flex pipe for a header No good...

I will say this....
With all this goo, all over this nice looking bipe, I could get used to Gasoline really easy...
I will convert that saito 1.25 to gas...( I think I said that already)
The idea or the flex pipe, and the muffler relocation as to keep the front end clean, and aid in the cleanliness of the plane...

Cheers...
Justin.

I am going set up the airplane normally at first, then check with a dle20 and a OS FS110A as to which engine balances out and feels better.

Do you guys thing the 110A is good enough?

I pulled the flex pipe off the motor and cut the two ends off and re-welded the header to stock condition.
(Horizon was back ordered for the header) I wanted to fly it. Not sit on it.
It will save me over 3 oz. By using stock header and it will be reliable .,
I had read that the flex pipe robs the engine of power. I can,t wait to see if there any dif in rpm.

The Saito is what I will be running.
Will test fly this week.

Livefast,

I installed my cdi unit by below the tank, It keeps it away from the heat of the motor and allows better flow around the motor.
Junt my 2 cents . You will love this combo!

Steiny,

does the Dle20 hover this airplane? Does it wing rock in a harrier?

Another thing, you guys are using the springs to stiffen the LG. What is that called? Can you point me to where I can get it from?

I am gettin the Bipe out of storage tomorrow. Decided on the Bipe over the 30cc AW Extra for now as its easier to transport

Ameyam

Seeing as how a DLE 20 makes between 12-14lb's of thrust, depending on prop, I think it will hover fine. Mine had a little wing rock in harrier, but nothing crazy. This plane flies sweet with over 1000 squares of wing on an 8lb +/- plane!

FYI...make sure you get stiff enough springs...otherwise they will not do anything to help it...

The The airflow travels back/down/ and then out....
The CDI, if left where it is...will mess up the airflow, and potentially overheat both the engine and the CDI...

Place it under the tank and on the cover. Reinforce with screw if worried it will fall off...
You can place the battery ontop of the CDI and strap it on...

I ran up my saito today...and noticed abit of vibration...

I believe it is the Plastic mount that makes it worse....as everything is dynamically balanced...

I only used 2 Batts. Both 1500mah and they are installed just aft of the tank. I get 5 flights with this setup.
You need a good throttle curve for hover, and I removed the detent from the radio for smooth operation on the stick.

Was wondering whether Hitec 225MG are recommended for the ailerons for a gas setup on this airplane. On the rudder and elevator I plan to use Futaba 3010 or Hitec 5625MGs anyway. Will setup with 3.25" foam wheels and stock LG initially and then will move to CF gear after a few flights. LiFe 1300mAh on Rx and 1800 mAh (with regulator) on ignition. Will be setting up on my new 12FG with all servos in different channels. Am trying to keep the weight down
