The last time I talked to Fred he is leaning toward a LATE Start for C40 (10:00 - 11:00) and possibly starting AMA 424 around 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. because of the heat. It stays light enough to fly until 7:30 p.m. and it starts to cool down at the site in the afternoon. The pace will be very relaxed with the emphasis on FUN! Remember, there is a Bar-B-Q team from Houston that will be doin' the fixins after the race and a live band playing for a Good Ol' Fashioned Barn Dance following the dinner.

The field will be open Thursday afternoon, all day Friday, and Saturday morning after you have completed registration which opens at 07:30. Please have a safe trip if you are planning to attend and bring a canopy/E-Z-Up, or your favorite shade tree...(wink)

REGISTRATION CLOSES AT MIDNIGHT TUESDAY, JULY 14!

Thanks to all the workers who endured the triple digit heat, our hosts Freddie French and Gary Fisher, Randy and Dick Ritch for sponsoring the race with fuel and prizes, the FANTASTIC BBQ DINNER, and all the pilots who traveled far to attend the race. We are already talking about the next one... Stay tuned for more pics and race results.

Here is one from the dinner Saturday evening and the Sundowner class race on Sunday.

It was a fun weekend and for once I was able to race as well as run the light system. We'll get the results posted soon. At this race the Paul Herman matrix program wasn't used going for pen and quill instead. So I don't have the results on a computer yet. Both the Club 40 and AMA 424 went off without a hitch and very little carnage. We had one hit the pylon after finishing the race, bummer. One mid air and take off collision, me, where the lane next to me launched on the wrong flag.

In the 424 we even had turn lights using Fred French's wireless system that consists of an inexpensive Spectrum radio, DC motor controllers turning Sears 12V LED lanterns on and off. Worked great with no delay! We had lots of help from friends and were not hurting for officials which made it really nice. Lots of chairs available for spectators under a canopy for shade too.

On Sunday we ran the Sun Downer event with in-air starts, like Warbird racing. This was a learning event for every one. The course set up was 1000' two pole. Due to attrition prior to actually racing we wound up with only 3 flyable airplanes. So 6 pilots shared the 3 airplanes! Amazingly after the end all three aircraft were intact. When there's a heat that's close it is really exciting and the drone of the engines is music. None of that high pitched whine of 22,000 rpm. I can't wait to see a fully populated Sun Downer race with 4 of those aircraft with their realistic sound droning around the course. At one point we had a dead stick at the far end of the course and the Sun Downer went into a pasture with horses. The horses started scattering before it landed. After it was retrieved they all came back and lined up at the fence and continued to watch the race. I thought on 1000' course it would be a bit boring, but it wasn't, they were turning around 12 seconds per lap and when those large airplanes swap positions in the air it's something to watch.

The turn lights were positioned at the pylon for the 600' course and the officials at the 1000' pylon which worked out nicely.

Just thought I'd post some thoughts and observations. Next up Fred's thinking of hosting a Giant Scale event in the fall.

Stan

Thank you to everyone at the Freddie's Flying Ranch. I was very impressed with the way the races were run and the equipment used to run them. Congratulations to all for a job well done, One Class Act! Hope you hold another race this year so more of us can fly these pylon classes. Here are some of the photos I took at Briggs, TX.

Thank you, Gene. You DFW boys are always tough - I'm curious what the Q25 guys thought of AMA 424 on the longer course. Again, thanks for making the long trek to the "oven".

Looking at some of the pictures, I've noticed a few Scat Cat type airplanes. I am curious, are they as competitive with the GP Vipers using the TT 40 engine, especially coming out of the turns? Also, where can I get a couple of these kits? Is Lone Star Balsa selling them again?

I always liked the Scat Cats. They look more like an actual sport plane then the Vipers, etc. I always thought that the current overhead wing with V tail Q500 design looked a little goofy (but they are fast).

Thanks,

Mike W

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the ladies and gentleman that worked the two days in the oven as Jim would say! You guys deserve a big hat’s off! We could not have done it with out you. Then I would like to thank all the flyers that pulled them long, long distances just to compete and have some fun in the sun. And what a magnificent group of pilots! Professionalism all the way. You guys rock! I think I can speak for Fred French and say that we were overwhelmed with the response we have received holding this first pylon event. I can not go without a special thank you to Linda French (Fred’s wife) Maria Fisher (my wife) Karen Duda (Jim’s wife) and Mary. These ladies went out of their way to accommodate every one with the concession stand and watermelons in the heat of the day. Thank you all. I cannot forget a special thank you to Doug Staines for presenting Fred and I with an awesome AMA recognition award. That was really cool.

Best regards

Gary Fisher

The hospitality of Fred, the race workers and the other racers was outstanding. Those of us from the Thunderbirds are 424 newbies and the experienced racers helped us get going and were encouraging. So, thanks everyone. We'll be back!

Mike, I was running a Scat Cat and think I did OK. In spite of a DQ I still managed to place 7th and got a fast time of 1:55 or so. I was impressed with this considering the last time I flew this event was in '96, I had a new engine that had 3 runs on a test stand and I went in without a trim flight (due to an engine malfunction my trim flight lasted all of 5 seconds and by the time the repair work was completed the race had started). I think this says that the Scat Cat could have been more competitive had the pilot been up to the task ... ;-)

Of course when you consider the skill of the first three guys, Randy Ritch, Jason Duda and Jason Oliver there is no airplane on the planet that would get me in front of them. They are exceptionally smooth and consistent pilots and know how to get the most out of a stock engine too. In my opinion the equipment gets you in the game but piloting and setup skills get you to the top. Scat Cat, Viper, whatever ... it's the driver that matters.

Does the V-tail matter over the conventional tail? I don't know but I will say that my DQ resulted from what I believe to be a high speed snap. I was at the apex of the turn, full elevator, maximum G's and speed and the full brunt of the tailwind when next thing I know is I'm now inverted coming out of the turn. This certainly gets your attention and I flew the rest of the day with much wider turns. Maybe some of the experienced racers could give their opinion on this and whether the tail arrangement is a factor.

Darrell ...
