Status: offline 		this may have been done before but i was on my favorite online hobby store and was looking at the rubber band free flight aircraft and thaought to myself that would make a nice rc model . my question is has anyone turned a guilo`s rubber band kit into a rc model ? would this work ? some input would realy help .

You will have to use the smallest electronics possible and keep the same COG.
I think Microbuilder could help on this one. Hopefully he will come along soon.

Now if Neurotex was around still, he'd have some pointers, that guy was a stick and tissue guru!  Wonder where he went off to...

Anyway, the Guillows and other model kits like it are ideal for conversions, and they have been converted many many times over so there is a ton of info out there.  If you do a search here on RCU, RCGroups, or even on Google, searching something simple like Guillows RC conversion, you'll get a ton of hits.  If there's one plane in particular that you're wanting to convert, my bet is its been converted at least once before and its still floating around in the e-world, just waiting to be searched for.

The only draw back to Guillows is their tendency to use overly-heavy balsa.  A lot of folks actually replace all the stock balsa with a better, lighter quality balsa, but its not always needed, depending on the RC gear you plan to use and which plane you plan to convert (some planes just have less balsa).  All the new ParkZone gear from the Vapor, Cessna, Ember and the like are perfect for these planes, or even AeroAce gear can do the job sometimes.  In fact, there's so many possibilities between planes and electronics, that deciding on just one is usually the hardest part

Status: offline 		what would be a good power to weight ratio ? i was actually thinking on useing parkzone servos and power plant , but i did not want to commit to a motor untill i am able to more acurately measure the flying weight and then make a better call for the power . thanks for the direction micro builder .

Status: offline 		.5 : 1 power/weight ratio is a good starting point, i.e. if the model weighs 20 grams total, you'll want at least 10 grams of thrust.  You can sometimes get away with less, but more is better (and more fun too!).  The Parkzone gear will probably be your best bet, they're just so easy to drop in and setup, plus the customer service is pretty darn good if something goes wrong.  There's pleanty of motor/gearbox/prop combos to choose from, but as you mentioned, its a good idea to get at least an estimated weight of the model.

Easily done, but the Sleek Streek and other Guillows models are made of heavy lumber usually, and not too strong.

The lighter your components, the better it will fly.

well i finaly made up my mind , i just purchased the guilos aeronca , it has a wingspan of 24" . i hope it is not too heavy . my theory behind the larger wingspan is i hope the wing loading will be more in favor for rc .i really wanted the 17" version but i figured i`d build this and see how difficult it will be to make it a nice flyer .  before i build it i`ll weigh just the craft unassembled to get a better idea of the flying weight .i`ll post my findings and see what all who are interested think the direction of the build should go.

Status: offline 		click on post reply instead of using fast reply.  At the bottom there is this link  "Click hereto upload images and files!".  Click on it and a little window will open.  click on browse and find the image you want.  Click on the image and it will be bound in the menu. click OK in that dialogue box.  Make sure you have finished your post and click OK.

Here is the ploat I built this week.

Status: offline 		I would go with a 2208 emax motor, either a 12 or 18A turnigy plush esc, hxt 500 servos, 2s1300 evo or eon lipo(flightpower) and a Sombra labs rx.  Depending on the prop you should have plenty of power.  The motor esc and servos are from HobbyCity and are mainstays in my gear.  I recommend getting that esc programming card as well..  You would be looking at about $40 at HC, thae battery usually goes for twenty something and the RX is $35.  The rx may be a bit of overkill but Sombra has never dropped out or glitched on me.  You could get a Zippy battery from hc and save a couple of bucks there as well.

Status: offline 		Could you clarify on which motor you're recommending? I searched hobbycity and couldn't find an "emax 2208". I've used a few turnigys (35-36 and 35-30) from them, as well as the little 16g Hextronic ( http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6311 ) and 10g Hextronic ( http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5358&Product_Name=18-11_2000kv_Micro_Brushless_Outrunner_(10g) - I haven't used this one yet, but it looks pretty good and is just waiting in it's little box for the right size project) ones and have been very happy with them, but I'm always looking for good deals that other people have found and like.

Status: offline 		From what I have heard the Corona Synthesized rxs ore ok but they apparently A one shot deal. I had legendary tronics problems when I started so I am picky about RX's and ESC's. The little motors are just awesome and unless you over prop them they are just jine. I have them on three birds right now. You might want to get some servo extensions and "y"s as well.

Status: offline 		I am not ducking you question just pondering it. The Ploat shown above has the turnigy plush 18a esc set to hard timing, the 1200 kv motor, an apc 7x6 prop and a Flight Power 3s1345mah30-33C battery. All together it weighs about a pound. With that gear it has a peak wattage of 200w and 19.5A. That theoretically puts it into 3d land. Using the 50w/lb for scale, 75w/lb for aerobatics and 100w/lb for 3D. My Bug is about 6 ozs and has close too 100w as I recall, so I am used to overpowering everything.

You might want to thry a GWS 9 or 10x 47, especially for a 2s battery, you should get decent flight. A GWS direct drive 8x4 might look better and fly better. What you really need is a handful of likely props and a Watt's Up meter.

Status: offline 		i was thinking a 7x6 as well , i was thinking not too much larger in diameter than the seven/six , i guess i could trim a larger diameter/pitch to suit my needs . the watts up meter is a must , that can be helpfull in many ways .
