Hi,

I understand the Phoenix Flight Simulator from the UK is a great program for Helicopters, but how does it work with fixed wing aircraft?

If anyone has used it for fixed wing aircraft, can you give any feedback on how well it works and how it compares to other simulators?

Thanks for your help.

Fly4Fun,

Wayne Miller

I just received my copy of Phoenix and I am pretty impressed so far.  I bought it for the heli's but have flown the fixed wings quite a bit too.  It seems pretty realistic to me.  There's a good variety of a/c to choose from too.

I have Phoenix too and it works great. The planes fly realistic  and the graphics are great. It installed and all updates installed with no problems.
I have AeroFly aswell and that is a good program too.

Im using a Futaba 10C and I bought the cables from the UK.
They should have the cables for your spectrum. You can email them right on their webpage under support.

Phoenix support is without doubt the best in the industry right now.

The US distribution was messed up by Great Planes who sniffed a competitor and tried to screw them. That clearly backfired because you can easily see from various RC forums traffic that the popularity of Phoenix is growing daily. The majority of new posts in most forums simulator sections are now discussing Phoenix.

You can get the simulator and any parts very quickly (3~4 days worldwide) and cheaply direct from their website.

Another major advantage of Phoenix is that it has gone from version 1, then updated to version 2 and currently version 2.5 beta all totally free. Aircraft and fields are continually being added for free of charge download, there are now 114 models included.

For helicopters it is head and shoulder above anything else out there right now. For fixed wing, it is at least on par with all the other major sims, and with version 2.5 undergoing some tweaking, it will probably be vying for number one.

The main thing I like is that it is not bogged down by these useless and silly cockpit views in 3D worlds and game functions that you see in (un)Real Flight. You can use Microsoft flight simulator if you want that. Phoenix is pure and simply an RC training tool. The online system is also really good now.

The nicest thing is that the people at Phoenix really listen. You can email a suggestion, get a personal reply and have a good chance of your idea being included in the next free program update.

Also, you have none of that registration hassle per Real Flight.

Im hoping 2.5 will bring some descent fixed wing aircraft though . The ones with it right now are so so and tumbles are very unrealistic ,other then that its definitely one of the better sims out.

I love Phoenix and it's heli simulation but I think it is rather terrible with regards to planes. Slow flight is painfully unrealistic. Planes want to stall at 1/2 throttle making high alpha flight virtually impossible. They have a very slow feel to them when flying around at any throttle setting. The will not tumblethe controls get very mushy at lower power settings making. I have found RealFlight superior to Phoenix with airplanes and Phoenix superior to RF with helis. Just my opinion.

I'm with Shane here. I had Phoenix version 1 and upgraded to version 2. I was more interested in helis at the time, so I was very happy with it. This year I went back to fixed wing more and saw Phoenix lacking in the fixed wing physics, so I went back to RealFlight. I heard that they made some tweaks to the fixed wing physics in Phoenix 2.5, so I gave it a try again this week. I'm still a little disappointed. There is a "slow" feeling to the planes when flying around. I pushed the simulator speed up and it feels a little better, but slow flight is still a little weird. On my approaches for landings (particularly with wind above 8mph) the plane almost feels like it's standing still, and when I touch down the planes bounces a lot more than I experience at the field.

I fly mostly sport planes. I was comparing the feel of my real Pulse XT 40 to the Gambler 40 and Low-wing trainer, and it just doesn't respond the same. If I used RealFlight and fly the Big Stik 40 or Super Sportster and it feels much closer to my Pulse XT. I also wish Phoenix had more sport plane selections - they seem to focus more on the planes that do 3D.

Now, the positives with Phoenix. They do seem to be much more responsive to customer requests and in-tune with the needs of the customers. Upgrade are free. I can install Phoenix on as many computers as I want, and it will still run (and I can still get upgrades) as long as I use their USB dongle. Realflight only lets you register their software (and get software upgrades) on one computer at a time (this stinks RealFlight! Why?!). Phoenix also uses a lot less resources. My desktop is older - in order to use RealFlight I have to set the graphics quality pretty low to prevent frame rate issues. With Phoenix I can still set the graphics higher without any issues with choppiness.

I'd prefer Phoenix if they could just figure out how to get their planes physics right. Until then I guess I'll stick with both sims.
