Yes I use it all the time but get the ultralight and not the normal spackling.

If you gonna cover over it with covering dont sand it smooth or it shows. Sand it with the balsa grain with some 180 sometimes I will even use 80 on it. If you sand it smooth it will be noticable under the covering.

I use it all the time too. If it gets thick in the can, add a little water. If you need it thinner for something, do the same.

No you need to sand it. Just watch that you dont sand it glass smooth. leave it a lil rough. Try it on some scrap balsa make a dent fill it then sand it smooth then cover it and you will see. I tend to leave a lil texture in mine in the direction of the balsa grain. So it sort of blends in.

It is one of the things I found out after covering a whole plane after using it for the fist time. I could look at the plane when it was in the sun and notice every spot I had sanded the spackle smooth.

lately I have been thinning it down to a brush on consistancy and use it to seal the whole plane. Only adds a lil weight and makes the covering look very nice and I can then just sand the whole plane smooth with a 400 grit paper then cover and or paint. It is however alot of work And I never do it on anything with see through covering.

Msaint, I've been toying with that idea for a while.

I always finish up with 400 grit.

Do you brush the mixture on after "final"sanding with 220 grit? How thin do you make it? Watery? Syrupy?

Do you have any problems in corners and on edges?

I'm about done framing up a Contender. With all the angles on this puppy, I'm not sure if it would the best model to try a new finishing technique on...

BTW, Joe, the ultralight spackle is the same thing as Model Magic filler; baking soda and water. A half-pint of Model magic sells for seven or so bucks; a half-pint of Bondex Lightweight Spackling Paste is a buck seventy-five at Wally World.

Thanks Steve, my LT-40 kit is calling for light weight wood filler, so I was wondering if spackle was the same thing?

Thin it as thin as you like with water. I like to use it to fill balsa grain sometimes if I am painting. Thin it, paint it on, sand it good and prime. Works well.

Covering over the spackle can be a little tricky. I try to make sure that my edges will not sit on the spackle. A hot iron will melt the spackle if your not carefull.

It works great, just be careful covering over it.

The Red-Devil lightweight spackle I use contains glass micro-balloons, not baking soda. A 1/2 Pint tub is so light that you'll think it's empty when you pick it up off the store shelf.

Walmart or a hardware store. Red Devil is the brand.

Thanks for info, I'll give it a try, or is there an alternative to spackle that won't add weight?

Joe:

NHP "Micro-Fill" is just about the same stuff, micro size glass balloons mixed with white glue.

An alternate is Prather "Miracle Micro-Balloons Filler" which comes dry - you can mix it with epoxy, polyester resin, white glue of your choice, or whatever.

Bill.

Thanks Will. Rob., I'll experiment with the Prather Micro Balloons, since I have a bottle of the stuff.
