ORIGINAL: David Jackson

I did not get the retracts for the Bearcat since the ones offered by ET were rated at 20-25lbs. My plan is to order a set of Robart giant scale gear as soon as I determine the length of the strut. For those interested, the retract mounting plate in approximately 3 7/8'' long, 2 3/4'' wide with a 1'' opening. From the top of the retract mounting plate to the wing skin is 1 7/8'' deep. The total length of the retract area of the wing from the outermost point on the mounting plate to wing root is 11 1/2'' (going to need a long strut). Judging by the size of the wheel well, it should accommodate a 4'' diameter wheel. Hope this info helps.

Once I am ready to start the assembly of the Bearcat, I will also need to find a suitable cowl to provide adequate clearance and cooling for the engine. The front of the cowl is just bit more than 10 1/2 inches in diameter (2' too short for my powerplant) and should be right for those wanting to install a Moki 150 radial.

David,
I just order the Bearcat and was wonder if you've done any work on yours? Also, what is the total length from the
end of the retract plate to the end of the wheel well and is 4" the max diameter wheel that can fit the wells without mods.
Finally, did you get a total dry weight before servos, engine, etc.?
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

I actually purchased the F-8 Bearcat with the intention of installing a large radial engine that I have. Since the engine doesn't fit, I have put the plane assembly somewhat on the back burner. After my initial examination of the plane, it was put back in the box. I recently ordered some servos for the Bearcat, but I don't anticipate doing any work on the plane until later in October once a couple of other projects are completed and flown. As far as wheel size for the F-8, I am not sure that a wheel size larger than 4" will fit the wheel well without some mods. Perhaps some of the other owners of the Bearcat will post their progress and more specifically, the wheel size and retract combination used.

David

WR450,

Looking forward to reading about your flight.

John Vh,

No issues with my ET F-8 Bearcat. I simply had four other projects on the board at the time it was received (assembly of an F-15 jumped ahead of all other planes).

WR450,

I've got a First Place 116 twin that I hope to stuff into the cowl, but may try to fit a DA 150 first. I would like to fit a large diameter 3 bladed prop, and just happen to have a 28/12 on hand that I have used on the DA 150.

Anyone done any paint touch up yet and know the exact color match for any US paints.
Got my cat Friday and need to do some touch up. My finish is flat, anyone with a gloss finish
that matched the included external tank?

I would be interested in the gear from Sierra Precision if you are checking with Darrell. Maybe if he is building for several of us it will impact the price...or not?
I'm a little sticky about scale so....if you decide to change the decals to the correct wings, do not try to remove the decals. They were put on first and then the wing was painted. After some re-covering I will have to sand and paint the wings then install new markings.
Keith, I am getting a PPG computer match so I'll let you know the numbers.
Anyone have advice on a DA85 for this plane? I have a DA50 also...wondered which would be best? I have Saito 150-180's in most war birds...this is a first for me.

Thanks Jerry, looking forward to the paint numbers.

In my kit I have two long flat black foam boards that have all the control rods bags together.
What are the foam boards for?

What the correct voltage for the included nav lights.? I tried 4.8.v, 6v, 9v.

I got my wing shipment today. I guess I got one from the first batch because the stars/bars and
numbers are on the wrong wings. From what I can tell this bird will easily weight over 25 pounds,
which will require some good retract/struts. The problem I see is the ribs supporting the retract plate
are not doubled and the bridge support underneath has too many lightening holes, hence with the
long struts and if you fly off grass, one bad landing may rip the heavy duty gear right out .

I have a tons of docs and some plastic models used to build my previous cat and I would like to add
more lines/rivets, panels, the blisters, put the stars/bars and numbers on the right wings and such to
scale it up a bit more. My cat is completely flat except some aux. parts and I prefer more a gloss
finish on this particular bird.

I decided I'm going to lightly beef up the retract structure and glass the bay, add the electronic
and engine and go fly. From that point I will make an assessment on going forth with any updates.

ANYBODY FLOWN ONE WITH A 75cc+ GAS ENGINE YET???

Rgds,
Keith

Jerry,
The DA85 would be your best options. As is, this bird is not that heavy and the 85 will fly it just fine.
I have reservation about the entire internal structure, as a couple of my fuz former have popped loose
and the wing ribs are light glued, probably to keep the weight down.
Large engine may require large mainentance.

Keith, Thanks for all the input. I'll go with the DA 85...(I wondered what those foam pieces are also?) I too have fuse formers that are popped loose. With a small dent on the bottom of the fuse it looks like maybe heavy stuff was loaded on top during shipment. After initial examination I most certainly will beef up the retract bays. Can't wait to get your flight report...I believe you will be the first. Maybe I'll wait for your report before I put a lot of time into scale cockpit, rivet detail etc.

Jerry,
Don't know if I'll be the first. I'm waiting for my engine to come back from CH-Ignitions and currently working
on a couple of other projects. It may not be until mid-to-late September before this bird sees air.
I'll upload some pics when I start the beef up and install.

I'm really shocked no one else has posted much on this bird. While its' certainly no COMP-ARF Bearcat,
I think its a great deal and with a little work it could look just as good as a well built Ziroli, Bates, etc at half
the effort. Not to mention its a great size and should present well when flown.

BTW, does the rudder taper seem a little wide at the top to you, (almost the same with as the bottom of
the rudder)? Its a minor fix.

Hopefully, someone will offer a flight report soon.

Keith,
The foam panels are for a cockpit deck. You slide them in one at a time. I'm not that smart to have figured it out, Curtis from Easy Tiger clued me in.
On the rudder taper, I agree some minor adjustment is needed but overall after spending time looking everything over I am quite pleased with the model...especially at the price.
Be sure and share your pics of the beefed up retract structure. I realize it's all relative to how one lands and on what surface but with my landings I'll definetly build them stronger.

Sorry, haven't taken it out of the box yet. Plan to begin working on it as soon as I finish the electrical install on the F-15. Hope to have it ready by the end of October.

I order the ET retracts just to take a look at and did not like them to light duty and struts are to small and the axles are also small .Centry jet has a very nice set and serria has a set also 3/4in struts 1/4in axles.I got the centry jet for my Bearcat and the serria for my Corseair (comp arf) model I'll use the TBM 4in wheels on the Bearcat.
