Boo,

I'm not gearing guru... Dacaur might explain better, but the lower you go in pinion, the lower your top end will be. You'll have more torque with the lower pinion. I'd say to keep the spur at 50 and experiment with the 28 and 31 tooth pinions. But be wary of your temps. The stock pinion is the 28 and the speed pinion is the 23. They recommend the lower gear for speed runs to keep the temps and rpms down to protect the electronics and motor.

If you have a 3s lipo, you may not want to go with higher pinion size... It will be fast, but heat up quickly. Get a temp gun and monitor your temps and experiment with the gears.

Joe

since i changed my revo to a slash now it seems slower iam using 2s 2200mah lipos with 23/55 gearing i want more speed.

so what gearing would be better i have a 50t spur and 28 31 pinion gears. would i be able to use 23/50 or 28/50 or go lower than a 23t pinion with the 50 spur to get more speed

Edit - my first try I read it as you went from a slash to a revo, the text below is correct for going from a revo to a slash....

You are thinking about this backward. on any given voltage the 23t pinion will be SLOWER than the 28t or 31t pinion. You need to up in pinion or down in spur to get more speed.

Assuming you are using the traxxas wheels and tires, I would start with 31/50 or 28/50, but both will be slower than a stock slash. 31/45 is the stock slash gearing. The 23t pinion is the "speed" pinion for a e-revo, you would use it if you were using 3 cell lipo/12cell nimh on an erevo. Since you are using a 2 cell lipo you dont want to use that, as it actualy gears the truck down and makes is slower on 2 cells than the 28t. The "speed" pinion on a slash is actualy 28t. 31/50 is about the same ratio as 28/45, which is the slash's "speed" pinion gearing. Honestly, you need to get a 45T spur gear to get your slash up to speed so you can get the stock 31/45 ratio. That will be WAY faster than the 23/55 you have now.

Also, you didnt say if you are running the lipos in paralell or series, the text above assumes paralell. If you are running in series then 31/50 should give you about 50mph...

forgot to say iam running a 60a ezrun esc and yes to the slash wheels and tyres. iam running the lipo`s in paralell for longer runtimes but all give the 31/50 ago and all order a new 45t spur aswell. thanks for the help guy`s

i thought the revo and slash were running the same setup but its good to know that if i change it back to revo spec i need to chnage the gearing back to what it is right now

I'm in no way a gearing guru either and I'm new to the hobby period really.  However, I noticed when I bought my MERV that the manual gave a breakdown of the acceptable gearing choices for both the Slash and Revo(since they are very similar).

If you haven't taken a look at that section of the manual, you should check it out, that might give you some helpful guideance as well.

The manual can also be found on the Traxxas website if you don't have a paper copy handy.

http://traxxas.com/sites/default/files/7107_manual_100205_0.pdf

The part about the gearing is on page 24.

I also attached a screenshot of that page as well.   Stay in the Green or Yellow range and you should be fine.  You'll be able to find an acceptable ratio there for what you are looking for I'm sure.  Personally, if you changed the wheels/tires to the Slash wheels and tires, then changing your gearing to the Slash's gearing should give you equivalent performance to the stock version.  That includes getting the 45T spur as dacaur stated, 45/28 is the Slash's speed gearing as it ships from the factory.

Hope that helps some.

Edit:  Additionally, that graph gives the gear ratios with each spur/pinion combination.  So, if you want to get close to the stock Slash speed gearing without buying a new spur gear, you can also buy a 31 tooth pinion gear which will give you a similar(though not exact) ratio as the 45/28 Slash gearing.  Stock Slash speed gearing is 8.10:1 while the 50/31 gearing will give you 8.13:1.  Dacaur did state this, I'm just giving the figures as presented on the attached graph.

Quick question, I ordered a new chassis because I thought the front of mine was bent after hitting a curb twice and breaking 2 front bulkheads.Looking at the new chassis and the old one they both have that curve up at the front lip... know what I mean? Also I don't think it's possible to bend the plastic chassis because it'll just go back to it's original shape.

So why is it such a pita to install the front bulkhead? It doesn't 'contour' to the curved up part of the chassis very much and you have to tighten down the screws abnormally to get them together... which puts a lot of stress on the bulkhead

hi guys...sorry for this questions but i´m new on electric stuff and i do really need good advices from people who know ....well,i have bought at 2nd hand one e-revo 7105 with titan 380 and it does not even get to see what these e-revo's run, this because when I tried to put this to run on my hand for the first time i can walk faster than him ...well,because my stock motor have died so i´m thinking to buy an cheap brushless combo...I have saw this kit´s from hobbywing and now i´m asking your opinion about it...
what you recomend to buy??

the Combo-B1 EZRUN-35A 13T@3000KV(EZRUN-3650M Motor)
or the
Combo-B2 EZRUN-35A 9 T@4300KV(EZRUN-3650M Motor)
i prefer to buy the combo because it also have the program card and they are at a good price....

What the Engine mount that i have to buy???of the summit #trx5660 or do i have to buy the complete mount???Or other one???

What pinion gear do you advice??? 23t ; 25t ; 28t ????

Spur gear plastic or steel and how much teeth?? 50t??45??

I also thinking to buy 2 Lipo ZIPPY Flightmax 2200mAh 2S1P 20C ...do you recommend more than 2S or more than 20C???

i´m really happy if i can put the e-revo to run around 45 or 50mph....

Sorry for all this questions but i do really want to learn with the persons that allready have good preparations because they can give good advices ....Also because that in Portugal the stores are only interested in making money with customers and often do not even know what they sell, which leads to many customers were unhappy with the final results and also frustrated ...
I appreciate all the help on what you think that should be done to adapt this kit ...

many thanks

yes that is the mount needed for one of those motors just be wary that you might need to chop abit of your receiver box to fit one of them though. as for speed i put 28/45 on my brothers mini revo and it hit 60 mph on a 2s lipo but i would stick with something like 28/50 until you get use to the power then muck around with the gearing

if it were me i would go for the 4300kv combo just a speed freak thats why. but watch your diffs as they may have problems with the extra power

or
EZRUN 8.5T COMBO 4000kv Motor 60A ESC

the difference from one to the other is 15usd .....or the 35A have good results and thats
enough???

- The engine mount (heat sink) that i have to buy its only the #5660???
Wright scored in the image wright?
This fits the stockplate or I have to buy everything???

if you can i would get the 60a esc with the 9t motor but the 35a would be ok and yes you only need the motor mount nothing else as you be just changing the mounts over not sure about the the pinion though

Ordered a new set of T-Bone bumpers a few days ago.  Should be getting them today or tomorrow.  I am getting the set with the chassis brace for my Merv.  I've broken two chassis over the past two years since owning my Merv.  Going to put the regular TBR bumpers on my son's Merv.  Making them both that more bulletproof.

I love my Tbone bumpers so far. I just have the front and rear with the aluminum chassis brace F/R. Have had no issues with my merv so far and the bumpers have saved me tons. Best thing I bought for the truck, protection front and rear..

I totally agree.  The TBR bumpers I currently have are the best investment I've made.  I am now going to put those on my son's Merv, 7 yr olds like to drive full throttle most of the time.  lol  That should save me some money in the long run.  I got a new set with chassis brace for my Merv, since I run at the local track and jump alot.  Got them yesterday, will install this weekend!

My front Tbone bumper works great for protection but do fill it sucks for the track when you come up short or a little nose down. Seems to catch everything really easy ending in a end over end flip..lol But since installing I havent broke anything in the front. The rear really seems to protect the wing tons and with that I havent had to replace it since installing.
I need to go threw my set up and make some chances now that winter is over and we have dirt. My rear just seems to push to much in turns under power. Also may try some other weight in the shocks. I will see after tomorrows run on the track what changes I need to make.

Well I ran at the track for the first time this year and it didn't last long. Ended up taking a bank turn full throttle and getting up to high on the bank. Sent me flying straight into a fence breaking my chassis in the front. Even with Tbone bumper and chassis brace it still snapped. I feel ok about it since I was full throttle and lucky thats all that broke. Ordered a new one and will be tearing it apart and rebuilding this week..

Sorry to hear that.  I've had a few rebuilds as I have broken two chassis in my Mervs life.  Installed the TBR bumpers on both Mervs over the weekend.  Unfortunately it hasn't quit raining enough days here to dry the track out.  It stops for part of a day but not nearly enough time.  Forecast doesn't look any better so I wait....

I know how the waiting goes, really sucks after such a long winter for us. The track was pretty muddy when I ran and I was the only one to do so..lol It was worth it for sure, nice to finally get some laps in and see how the merv handled jumps and turns. Think after some set up changes it will fair well against the slashes this summer.
Anyone have a good starting point for the diffs?

I'm bored at home and have 2x 2s lipos and a series connector... you know the question coming. Would it hurt it if I just did 1 or 2 runs with the 4s set-up, it would have to be in nimh mode correct? I'm just curious to see how fast it can go

7:34pm, I'm not sure.  It may be fine for a short time or you could smoke the VXL ESC or something.  I would say okay if you had a 1/10 ESC to handle the current.  If you do try it I'd just keep a close eye on the temps.  I personally haven't run my Merv with lipos in series.  So hopefully someone else can answer more thoroughly.

Finally got a day of sun the other day so made it to the track.  First time on the track with the full 1/10 BL system and new TBR bumpers w/chassis brace.  Had a good time and the Merv performed great.  I did noticed the new bumper set changed the weight of the Merv slightly as it was landing differently from jumps then I was use to.  Also the rear bumper on this TBR set sticks more straight out then angled up ones I have and it was catching the ground causing the Merv to cart-wheel or endo and flip upside down alot more.  Which resulted in a trashed rear wing by the end of the outting.

So today I was doing some routine maintenance on the Merv, and decided to remove the rear bumper to see if it will eliminate the problems it was causing on the track.  Then after removing the trashed wing I noticed the screw holes lined up with the rear bumper so I decided to install it as my rear wing.  Might be a stronger bumper...I mean rear wing than the stock plastic one.  lol  What do you guys think?  How does it look?  I haven't ran it yet but will see how it does the next time out.

I was able to try out my new setup on the track yesterday and I think I am going to leave it this way.  At first when my Merv jumped the front end would just drop but I realized I had to change my driving style slightly once again with the weight change.  After a few laps I had it down and the Merv was flying!  It still cart wheels now and then but not as much as before.  At least now when I come up short on a jump it doesn't flip on its top as it did alot when the rear bumper was there causing it to recoil hard on to its top.  Also the new "TBR wing" takes the beating better than the stock wing.  lol  Ran several lipos and had a great time.  My Merv was as fast if not faster than everyone there including 4x4 Slash, a couple of 1/10 4wd buggies, 2wd truggies.
