Nice looking F-18. Is that the YA F-18??? If it is what strengthening did you have to do?? I corresponded with Shaun in San Diego and his site mentions that.

yea its the big YA F-18.. structural mods included the "new" generation carbon re-inforced wings. The rear spar bulkhead is "doubled" w/ .040" aluminum between the 2 pieces. the Forward bulkhead is the "new" version w/ 2 layers of 3/32" carbon fiber plates. Here's a pic of the forward bulkhead.

Thomas,

That's a great job on the F-18, really sweet looking. I really appreciated the video showing the gear working, it always looks neat. Are the gear and the doors electric or are they operated by air? From their looks I assume air but I never know. I'm a old prop guy so on all of my large planes I use line restrictors to slow the gear down a little.

Whose turbines did you choose? Was there a specific reason for your choice?

Thanks again for the pictures!

David

PS No camera yet, Circuit City tonight.

David,
the gears and doors are all air powered. I've got $500 in the air system alone, and that doesn't include the 13 air cylinders for the gear doors, or the landing gear. I'll put up a pic of the air system tray. Theirs over 50 feet of air-line in the f-18. I've got a pair of Ram 1000's in the plane. Specific reason... right price at the right time One is an RTI built ram 1000 that puts about 32#'s of thrust out. the other is a Zero time since new Ram 1000 that needs an autostart upgrade. One thing that i never thought or respected was the price of the air-system parts and the amount of work that goes into installing it all. After putting all of this in the F-18, i honestly can't think of anywhere to put all the valves, servo's and cylinders for an F-14 in the 1/10 size one and still have them accessible for maintenance. The F-18 i spend over 3 months tracking air-leaks down. Only to find out that 2 of the brand new robart air tanks were the cause of the only leaks found.

Thomas,

That's one of the hard parts about a 1/10th scale: room. I'm going to build mine air too but many of the air cylinders will be real hard if not impossible to reach for maintenance.

I never though about AIR cost as an issue but it sounds like maybe I should have.

If you have extra time when you come down to Mooresville (Ha Ha) give me a call and maybe we can have lunch together or something. I live near Carowinds on the southwest side so we're only about 30 miles apart then. I can talk shop, especially F-14's all day long especially to someone who shares an interest. I'll PM you my phone # just in case.

David

one good thing about the F-14 is it would be farely simple to devise a method of closing the doors as the gear retracts and vice versa. The f-18 is tricky b/c each of the main gear doors opens a different amount and closes on a different hinge axis.

The end of the year is coming up fast! hopefully this 150 work period will give me the $$$ i need to finish everything but the turbine upgrade.

The wings are the new generation wings. The original forward bulkhead is theirs (10 ply 1/4" ply w/ a layer of carbon, and 10 ply 1/8" ply behind that). But i decided to add the 2 layers of 3/32" carbon and the extra pieces of 1/4" ply around the wing recievers for extra piece of mind. The after bulkhead was designed and pre-installed by the previous owner.

My friend you have more patience than I do spending 3 months tracking down air leaks. ROFLMAO!!! My Welsh heritage would have resulted in more than a few screams, curses, etc. that I can get away with here in the New Hampshire but would have scared the crap out of the cats and my beloved Siberian Husky Mischa.
