With these planes being well documented as far as build threads goes, Im just doing a follow along here.  With hopes of learning form the rc community here, and maybe for someone to see problems Im not aware of. The bird of time is getting spoilers from vintage sailplanes, and a medusa motor with a gear box.  The oly 2s is getting a easy glider pro power pack. It is getting spoilers as well. I did some experimenting today. tried burning and staining, on the oly 2 s. Ive burned alot of wood , but with this balsa its too tricky, for it wants to ignite before it goes dark. The stain I used after its dry had no effect on the monocoat addhesion. For one I covered it with balsarite before covering.  Also kept the stain light, and just rubbing it in. I think with the dark wood grain and the see thru monocoat is going to be something special. Im not a english perfector, and dont care to be,  Im more interested in sailplanes than a perfect text. So here we go were off, dont be affraid to jump in there

Hey, never tried burning balsa to darken it, only to dispose of planes that seemed cursed from the start . I'll be following along on this one for sure! Should look really different, in a good way, with transparent covering over stained balsa. Good thinking. Not sure how these are constructed on the wings, but if leading edge is of D-box design with both top and bottom sheeted up to the spar, maybe consider staining the sheeting and only covering wings from spar back for a custom appearance and save an 1/64th gram of weight. Just a thought, so...I have seen photos of this done but never in person, and in photos looked truly special.

well heres a thought. Im a old body and paint  for cars from way back. We were tinting clear before the paint stores came out with a speacial tint for just that.  I dont know why a person couldnt put tint in the balsarite then cover with clear monocote, for a unique look. just a thought.

Well Im getting better. Stab and elevator hinged and covered, and i wont have to redo it like on the aero-master.  Anyway the darkening of the wood really makes a differance. Tried to get pictures of the difference but dont know how it will turn out , as far as being able to tell in a photo. Ive got some neat things planned for these two planes, and hope ypu guys agree by the time its over. anyway the hinges were supplied with the oly 2s kit wernt the pin type. there the little strips. I went ahead and used them and they are great. you can get the componets alot closer. Then too you dont have to cut such a big slot

That does look pretty darn good with the trans. green covering. I'm getting some ideas here for my next build, which shouldn't be much longer I hope. Hope these turn out as well as your aeromaster did, keep us up to date on these builds.

well ive just about got the tail done and started on the fuse. that is the oly 2s on the bird of time motor has been backordered and the spoilers arnt here yet. also I went to joeseph oregon. what a beautifull place its. rc sport flyer put on a event this weekend and it was sailplane city. The peolpe were very nice, and i spent all day watching every flight, and sunburnt my legs. It was a day ill always remember for sure. My radio is still in the shop ,Im supposed to call tomorrow, so I wasnt able to fly any of my planes, but I paid the flying fee anyway. I got to hold a dlg pictures included show the plane it was very light, really light. I heard that they went to hells canyoun there, and was slope soaring of the vast canyoun, and even lost some planes. Seems they get into sink, and not able to get them back. The guy I talked to , my impression was it was not a cheap plane either. Im sure rc sport flyer will be doing a follow up , on the event. But what a wonderfull weekend. Beautifull country and planes and nice folks.

here some more pictures. the last is over looking into hells canyoun. what was cool was the had tow launches and hi starts. and good lift for the day. It went by fast. Im difenitly going back next year. It was about 320 miles one way for me. camped in a tent. Wound up being a life memory. cant wait to read the artical in rc sport flyer. Wish i could have seen them slope fly in hells canyoun. Maybe next year.

Looks like a great time, wish I could go to some of these places! Great folks, great location, all make for incredible trip. Hope you get a chance to fly into hell and back next time. Thanks for sharing with us all here. Been a bummer here(family issues) for a few days and that really lifted me up to see pics and hear about some flying. Maybe after this week I'll have some pics of some new flying areas and conditions as going to see family over the fourth and try some flying with them. Thanks again for the pics, makes me jealous!

well its my first glassing and was right at home, beings how im a journeyman bodyman. but it was my first over wood there. I tell ya it turns out pretty good and im glasssing all fusees in the future.I recieved the air brakes from vintage sailplane and there just cool. Its hard to relate on the internet there, but Im thinking I need another pair. Anyway thats the last three pictures. The trick to glassing is putting scotch tape over finger, when you use thin ca to lay the cloth. Then a even coat of resin. For some reason, I had it built up in my head, that this whould be diffacult. Such is not the case. And talk about strong.

Nice job. My first glassing job was not to bad, but messed up in some areas and had to add a lot of filler and crap and it came out pretty hefty. All was good though as it was a glow powered plane. Going to paint, or use liteweight covering for a finish?

Im just going to leave the fuse unfinished you might say. The secound coat of glass ,just shows the wood and it really looks good the way it is. Ive now started on the wing for the oly 2s as well. I took some pictures of what i got in the mail today. A 9303 sailplane radio with the spectrum upgrade. Bought it thru the classified ads from this site. came from mn hobbies and i saved alot of money there. Also got a dlg from art hobby its the hybrid dl 1.5 meter. Im doing a build thread on the hybrid for i dont think it will take long and whould be fun. Both these companys were just a pleasure to do buisness with. and things got here fast. Anyway heres some pictures.

well we started on the wing and since this is my first woody, although i did build a spectra but never flew it back in 96. Anyway there, i did get to a point where i was stumped but made it thru it. One thing was the ply ribb end cap had to read almost all the way thru the directions to figure out that gets put on last there. Also the shear webs gave me a throw and thanks to ray got straightened out there. wing joiners was a bit of a challenge there, but hey its looking good the oly 2 s, and its rewarding as well. Im still waiting for my medusa motor, should call on that so bird of time has been parked for now. I did get my spectrum reciever back the other day along with the sailplane jr 9303 im transmitter rich. Im going to go flying tomorrow for sure. Dont think Ill take the areo-master up yet tho. I did get some 123 batterys today however. And I plan on useing those for recievers. Speaking of which need to check mine make sure they have the quick connect upgrade there. But anyway this oly 2s is a great kit but the plans are for more experinced builders but not that diffacult just a few holes in it. Its hard to believe somebody built it in 8 hrs. lol So ive lots to do in the plane department, and im excited about throwing one up in the air tomorrow, for sure. In one of the pictures i set my half constructed wing on the aro-master. oly 2s is wider in the wing span department. The changes I plan to make is a bolt on wing and moveing the spoilers out towards the wing tips a few bays. And of course the looks there. Anyway see you in the sky One foot note.....I did find a build thread on the oly 2s in rcgroups. It whould have saved me alot of time if I whould of looked it up first. And thats where I got the Idea of using canned food for weights. I had corn however as oposed to green beans

well getting close to finishing a wing half there on the oly 2s. Took alittle extra research to know what Im doing on the spoiler bays, but finally got her set up. On a oly 2 s build thread, in rcgroups, they show a wire to lift the spoiler but its such a tight fit, Im thinking just the servo horn will be all I need.. I ran out of glue, when putting on the top sheeting, and had another bottle on the ready. Well that glue was bad and old, so eventually went to elmers I had. Anyway I was hurrying and got it off alittle, but was able to fake them out. anyway heres a few more pictures

Looking good man! I hate when glue goes bad . Had to glue a piece onto a battery hatch other day and my medium ca was more like extra thick, just shy of nonuseable. But, looks like you been pretty busy, and doing a good job as well. Keep it going!

WELL MEDUSA MOTORS AFTER 9 WEEKS SENT ME MY MONEY BACK. And that was the motor for the bird of time. Im mad at them for one when I ordered the motor It came back as canceld. I imediatly call and asked if I was charged for the back ordered item, and was told by jeff no. This then was realated to over draft charges and upoun recalling jeff was told he didnt realize i used paypal and therefore I was charged. He was nice enough to say he whould throw in a bec for the motor for all the trouble after 5 weeks of no motor. Then he started to ignore my calls and emails and after nine weeks just returned my money. This upset me for i asked for a similair geard motor to forget the v2 but was ignored. Now since Im trying to get into high starts Im just going to slap the bird of time together. And learn how to use my high start. Im also inluding some art hobby 1.5 disc launcher pictures there. Its almost done I have a mini start as well both are pinacle. Anyway medusa figures I should of known that when you use pay pal that you will be charged and it takes 9 weeks to get your moey back. I contend that it was bad customer service and he didnt follow thru on what he said. And hes was wrong in just giving me my money back after such along period of time. So now bird of time is just going to be built as a glider. Whats your opinion out there? Also this is not the only problem Ive had out there, theres even more here lately. I dont know whats happened to customer service with these companys, but in my opinion, its getting bad out there. Also ordered a miles sailplane kit from kennedy composites. The post office turned it into kindleing. a replacement is on the way, but what a shame.

well the art hobby 1.5 dlg is about finished. looks like the medusa motor for bot is still on there. But im going to fly it with the high start for this season. Im getting back on the oly 2s as soon as bod is flying as a pure sailplane there. heres some pictures of the dlg , waiting for the right glue to glue in servos. I ordered some pcm, hobby lobbys site said it glues anything to anything. Im a slow builder I guess, for setting up the dlg, of course Im perticular, took me more time than I figured. But it looks good, hope it flies good as well. I had stained the underside of the wing with a light green, and tried to accent the colors. Still have the logo to put on it, and finish set up. Im really excited about it all. Ill launch of the mini high start.

Kennedy deposits sent a replacement right out. And the kit arrived in perfect condition. Ater selling my harley, Im pretty well set up as far as kits go. Also bought a cargo trailer to haul all these planes around. Ill be starting more threads for sure. Also got in a genie glider pro from vintage sailplanes. The kit from kennedy is a miles. And another art hobby plane the thermic as a pure glider. And a viking is on the way. So Im set up for sure. But it will be back to the oly 2s.

Well its stated on the B.O.T. box, that it can be built in as little of time as 2 to 3 hours. It took me all weekend, and im to tired to fly it now. So ill be brbqing hamburgers and getting ready for work tomorrow. But to be fair, I used my new 9303 JR radio, and that took some time reading manual and trying to figure that out. I also had bought some a123 batterys from radical rc, which Ill be useing for flight battery for the B.O.T. I bought two different 2 cell packs one being the 26650 cell, the bigger pack which I wound up using for the correct center of gravity there. The other cell was the 18650, which is more reasonable as far as size goes, referring to flight battery. I did find on radical rc the charge rate, and full voltage perimaters. And my venom charger worked out real well. On the B.O.T. there were a few things that gave me some fits. My objective was to get it together to learn how to use my pinnalce high start. One thing was the set screws for the stab elevator didnt work for there was nothing to thread too on one side. Also took some time to get things to fit. Like outer wing panels. Control rods took some time to get to a satisfactory level as well. I dont know what ill do if I ever have troulbe with the elevator, for I epoxied it together over the fuse. Anyway she is ready. And Im real nervous about using the highstart for the first time, despite my research. Ajaer did a post on high starts that helped alot, and seeing one used in Joeseph helped as well. Still nervous however, but excited. Learning all the time here. Anybody have any suggestion for rudder to elevator mix on the B.O.T.?

Just did the maiden on my 2nd stretched BOT sunday. AUW 7.0lbs.
Depending on how tight the turn, I use ~1/16 to 1/2 up, measured at the edge, but this is not a stock built kit.
I wish this one took 2-3 hours to build.

Well after setting up the elevator servo as per instructions on the B.O.T. , I had very little throw. This tiny hole in the rear of fuse just gave me and my fat fingers fits. Im a struggeler for sure. Anyway thanks to some help from sundevilpiolet, I ordered in a bellcrank from tower. Moved the servo under the wing, and used the antenna tube for the control linkage. This really took more time than I imagined. But now I have plenty of throw, a better servo, and confidence. Im setting up the throws, and then its time to fly finally. I have a question. Elevator throw calls for 9/16 up and down. But its not saying where to measure from. Im thinking that if I measure the front of the elevator where its slotted to travel, It whould be more accurate than trying to set throws from the rear. Beings how its a full flying stab, isnt the throw measurments the same on both the front and the rear?

Thought Id better include some final pictures there. I had put the bell crank on a plywood plate with a thin coat of epoxie for strentgh. Then epoxied inside of fuse. On the other end I made sure the antenna tupe wound up as the same hieght as the control arm on the servo. And braced for no slopp. And then installed the switch. Here I thought I was done. But I am now.

Your projects are coming along great. Thanks for the honorable mention about the bell-crank. That is the reason I enjoy this whole forum thing. Great to trade ideas on how to get these planes setup. Always 100 ways to do something.
