Status: offline 		Bottom of the right wing is now covered.

I have to say, every time I use SolarTex I am amazed at its ability to go around a wing tip.  I just turn the temp up a bit with the iron, warm the covering in advance of the curve, and bend it into place.  It really cant be easier!

Taking a 15 minute break then onto the top side covering.

Status: offline 		Right wing is now totally covered.  I plan on going back over both wings with a little hotter iron to tighent things up right before painting and I still need to cut / melt the holes for all the hardpoints, servo hatches, and strut screws.  I use a cheap solder iron for the screw holes and an xacto for the servo hatch holes.

That's it for this weekend.

Status: offline 		I have been making changes to the plans as far as the wood they used. This is the list of wood used in the plane, bass wood, plywood, maple, mahogany, spruce, luan, and 2 5x5 1/4 balsa. Very heavy plane at 21#, used a 38 gas. I am going to try and get that down to about 16# and use a 30 gas. All the controls are pull-pull cable, all that will be gone, first time seeing cable flaps and ailerons in my 60 years of modeling. A build thread, I would be to slow for these guys.

FWIW, fabric is the only way to cover a compound curve, such as your wing tips. It always works out perfectly. The weave of your fabric is what lets it conform to the complex shape.

As for tightening, it's the same as the Koverall which I use. The dope is what really causes the shrink. You'll never get the heat shrink fabric as taught as it becomes once the dope shrinks it. And once it's all shrunk and painted, that adds to the integrity of the iwng. It strengthens things considerably. That's something a plastic iron on covering won't do.

As an aside, Sig mentions that in the instructions for their 1/6 Cubs. They warn that the wing structure as designed is not suitable for the iron on films due to their lack of added strengt.

In any case, it's nice to see that you have rebuilt your plane. Very nice. Wish you all the best with the "new" version.

I can hardly believe that I finally read another fellow showing the advantages of fabric and aircraft dope.

Another surprise is that do335a is nearly my next door neighbor. Wherever he is in Toronto I am a bit west of the Pearsen Airport..

Status: offline 		This morning, as planned, I put the color onto the bottom side of each wing.  Everything is coming along.

I am off from work this coming week so maybe on Wednesday or Thrusday I will spray the top sides of each wing completing that part of the project.

Hopefully this week I can cover up  the fusealge, gear, and start painting on the fusealge parts + struts.  

There is a bunch to do but we're getting there.

Status: offline 		I got done at work a little early today so I came home and jumped right into painting the top sides of the wings.

At this point the wings are completely repaired.

Next, I will trim and prime the cowl.  When the cowl is ready for the final prime I will strip the landing gear and prime them along with the cowl.  I will also prime the main struts.  Once all that is done I will begin covering the fueselage.

Status: offline 		Too windy outside for the painting to continue...  However, the primer was dry enough to allow the gear to get recovered.  I drew a template onto my cutting surface then cut to shape four pieces (Two one direction and two the opposite).

I covered the bottom side first to have the overlap from the top side appear on the bottom and out of view.

The covering doesn't stick very well to the metal framework so you have to be really careful as you work the first piece on.  Once the top side goes on, and sticks to the first, the covering becomes permanently attached.

Status: offline 		Weather turned a little cold a little fast around here but I managed to get the cowl and struts painted as planned.  I think I was pushing the limits of the paint in terms of cold but everything went well.

This Tuesday I will try and get the fuselage recovered and then next weekend I can paint the cream color onto the fuselage.

On a few occasions in winter it will get down to the 20s-30s.  During the day it warms back up to the 50s.  Not too cold.

That being said, The Klass Kote data sheets recommend painting in weather warmer than 70.  I bettery hurry or I'll miss my window until the end of winter!!

Here in Gods' country we'll see temps well below zero, as cold as -10.  I'm sure that is warm in contrast to what you see up in Canada!

Status: offline 		I'm tired..  Started covering  the remainder of the fuselage at around 800 AM.  It is now 700 PM and I just finished putting on the cream color onto the fuselage.  I'm trying to beat the cooler weather of winter.  The cream was a little difficult to spray in the setting sun / cooler temp so I got a few runs on the gear parts.  Fortunately the fuselage was perfect.  I'll sand the flaws on the gear next weekend and touch up those parts.

Now that the cream is on I should be able to tape and paint the red onto the fuselage completing the paintwork next weekend.

Status: offline 		Glad to se you didn't scrap it out. Mine was damaged way beyond what your was and I almost rebuilt it but I had a 1/3 kit on the way so I just gave it to a friend and built the 1/3 for myself.
