Solortex is my favorite as well, But I do use my heat gun on it. I don't get to crazy with the gun though. Scallops on the DR1 needed some gun action.
The soldering Iron trick for holes is somthing I will try. I agree It's frustrating trying to cut a nice clean small hole.

Here is a close shot of how well the solder iron cuts the holes.

I understand the reasoning behind going electric, but I just have to hear my airplane in the air. A nice smooth 1.60 twin glow flies cubs great even up here in Colorado. Best of luck, I have enjoyed following this build! Any chance of a flight vid when you are done? You have inspired me to build an L-4.

Two questions for you SunDevilPilot: first the weights you used when building and sheeting the wing, where did you get them? Second where will you fly the Super Cub? I live in San Tan Valley and would very much like to see it fly. I am a cubaholic, have them from 1/4 to micro. have loved following your building, you are a great builder.

The weights are actually something for woodworking / welding. They are called MagSwitches. They will clamp to a cast iron top with crazy force. The handle at the top turns the magnetic field on and off.
I fly at Arizona Model Aviators (Meridian road and Brown Road in Mesa). I fly on Mondays.

Phil, I am sending off my money today for a used Zenoah GT 80. I would like to build a engine test stand and run it before bolting it on the plane. I will order a 24x10 prop for it today and a couple new plugs.

Should be a good motor for the Cub.

You probably have the garage in dust-free mode right now for painting.
What thickness of ply should I pick up for the test stand? I will not buy a 4x8 sheet. Lowes sells smaller pieces of ply for the same price as a 4x8 sheet.

SDP, my comment to you about Norm was more of acompliment. I look at Norm as the epitamy of craftmanship, just as your plane is becoming.

Today I covered up the right wing and cut all the holes / servo hatches into it. I still need to cover the ailerons, flaps, and servo plates but the hard part of the wings is done. Solartex made the job really easy.
I keep running out of time each day to continue with some more paint. Hopefully tomorrow I can spray the cowl and the wing struts.

Little too windy and cold for painting today... So.... On with the covering.
I finished up covering on the left wing, got the aileron and flap covered.
I covered the edges first then moved onto the bottom. I cut the hole for the aluminum control horn already in the surface and installed the bottom. Then onto the top and the surfaces were complete. Like the wings, the hinge holes were cut with a solder iron.
Time for some lunch then I will move onto the righ wings flap and aileron.

This morning I finished up some of the minor details to the fuselage in preparation of covering it. I cut a hole in the firewall for the ESC wires to enter the fuselage. The hole was sized to accept a rubber grommet which I also installed into the radio receiver tray. All the servo wires from the receiver will go through the grommet in the plate keeping things looking nice. I also drilled the lower most rudder hinge hole. This was omitted until the rudder fin was installed onto the fuselage.
After those details were done I sprayed a little red onto the cowl and onto the wing struts. Like the cream, the red sprayed really well. No issues.
The last photo shows the cowl adjacent one of the landing gear... I am happy with the color combination.

Phil,
Your Super cub is looking great! Really looking forward to seeing it finished and ready for the maiden flight. Are you going to use a 12s battery system with the Hacker motor and 120 amp ESC?

That's what I think I will use on my Giant Stik. Is your Hacker motor approximately the same size as a 1.60 RimFire out runner? How much will the Super Cub weigh in at? There is no comparison between an ARF and the way you build up a plane! Really enjoy watching your progress!

The motor I have is very similar to the 1.60 Rimfire. The biggest difference, in looking at the specs, is the Kv rating. The Rimfire motor is 250 Kv and mine is 192 Kv. I believe they are just about the same wattage though. I should get in the area of 2400 watts with my setup. I believe the plane will weigh somewhere in the area of 19 lbs with batteries.
