Pins looks like a good mod to do. I'll try that on mine also.

Hey Sundevil,

Are you going to be able to fly your Super Cub as good as this?

Been putting off joining the rear fuse because I didn't want to mess it up but I came to the point it needed to be done. My flying day was ruined because of rain so I had no excuses. I made a jig for the fuselage to sit in to keep it square and with a centerline drawn on my building board I went to work. Went well with no issues. Make sure you have a lot of clamps!

Here is the fuselage with the last few braces drying. The initial steps were done with the fuselage sitting on it's base within the guides and the landing gear off.

Been working away on the Cub and have made some progress. I just completed the firewall. As you can see I customized it to accommodate the Pitts Style muffler I am using. I will be adding dowel pins through the fuselage side into the firewall to really lock it in place but I couldn't resist putting the motor on to see how it fits. Right thrust and down thrust are built into the firewall.

Next I will finish the turtle deck and the dash. Then onto the tail surfaces or the wings.

Moosehead2,

I'll get back to it shortly....I purchased my first home and moving from the rental into the new home was quite the transition.  Had a few things to do around the house to get it up and running and unfortunately I had to put the Cub on temporary hold.  The new house is all set up so I will most likely get back to the Cub this weekend.  Thanks for the interest!

Back at it.....

Today I put together the fuselage formers for the turtle deck.  Once they were completed I glued them onto the fuselage.  Next will come the stringers for the turtle deck then onto the dash and lower fuselage floor.  After that I will build the rudder and elevators.

Formers were all stock with no modifications.

I'm sure many of your followers look forward to your postings. I'm not able to get to my building as I want, however I love being able to view a well thought out project as yours. Your postings helps remove some those pains we modelers experience when we're not able to build as we would like to do. Your work is very refreshing, it helps to perk me up seeing your modeling photos.

I'm currently gathering the necessary items to convert my Balsa USA J-3 Cub kit to a Super Cub.

Thanks for sharing your project with so many modelers.

Keith

I am curious, what is the difference between the J-3 Cub and the Super Cub, in the RC hobby land? I know that there are dozens of differences between a Real J-3 Cub and PA-18 Super Cub, just asking because I am getting ready to build a ¼ scale Cub myself. Does one have to do their own research as to what changes need to be done to make the Super Cub? Furthermore, why do the manufactures not offer a Supper cub right out of the box (build that is)?

SunDevilPilot, thanks for the thread, very helpful, and inspirational.

Here is where I am currently.

I am still working on the turtle deck, specifically the stringers.  I had to bend the 1/4" Balsa corner stringers prior to their installation to make them attach properly.  Not sure if the wood I got was a little heavier grade than the original but there was no way I was going to bend them on the fuselage as they were glued.  Was easy enough.  Just soaked the wood in a bucket of water for about 4 hours then clamped them over a former with a curve cut into it until dry.  Much easier this way.  Gluing them one joint at a time until I get past the curve.

I am trying to adapt the J3 to a PA18 in a method that is close to the PA18 but not so far from the J3 that I have to modify everything.  I am changing the fuselage shape (PA18 is wider at the nose than a J3), the shape of the tail feathers (Different shape + Counterbalances on elevator), and adding flaps to the wings.  I am also modifying the fuse to accept the door but that would have been done if it was a J3 or a PA18.

Hope that helps,

SunDevilPilot

Got the turtle deck all done. Was an easy process with the pre-bent stringers.

I am now in the final stages of the forward fuselage, specifically the forward dash. I had to redesign the area to make it strong enough to support the wires tying the cabin into the wing. I basically copied the balsa USA Super Cub design. Once I glue the formers in I will bend the wires and sheet the dash. Then I can move onto the tail surfaces.
