My friend and I are going to build 4 or 5 Raptors. I am going to make some mods and wonder if you all have any advice. First, I am going to add more maple to the engine mount so the engine bolts on. Second I am going to put a Balsa 1/4sq. on the trailing edge of the wing. My last question is are Raptors a kind of plane, basically are they all very similar? The ones at my field are. If you all have any suggestions or comments please post them.

Do a member search for Terror Dactyl here..he invented the Raptor I think..

Go to the RCCA website and look for Jimbo or Big Country. They are building and flying more Raptors than just about anybody these days.

Combat Kid,

As you beef up the Raptors, just remember that there is a weight limit for each class you fly. The raptors that I have flown against are very tough planes and would not need much more strength. If you can find out who is making them, then it would be best to ask them.

Where are you located in Texas. We fly 'em in Houston all the time.

You can put ALOT of armor on a raptor without coming close to 3.5 lbs for Open B. For SSC, our Raptors are coming out at 40 or 41oz on the nose...

I want to strengthen my new one because my last one came apart in midair. I didn't even get to crash it. Worse when half of the wing ripped off, I didn't know which half to control! Then once I bring it back, I am told that I should of used spruce instead of balsa for the spars, that is what im going to do on my new plane.

Try 1/8 fiberglass rods instead of spruce. They are MUCH stronger.

We run 1/4" fiberglass rods in the leading edge. The rod runs full length of the wing through the fuse. Makes it much difficult to lose a wing in a midair...

I wish I had been behind the Raptor, but it is the product of Richard Oliver (pylon racer and CL stunt competitor)

The Raptor progressed from 40" to 48" in the same wing plan, then went to 48"/52" with no taper in the thickness and no sweep in the trailing edge and it flies even better.

The best ways to strengthen all of them it the fiberglass lead edge, balsa trailing edge, if not spruce at least pine spars, but the thoughts are still not sure on Ripstop nylon for the armor as weight is a concern.

The Raptor is built to fly not crash so that one is up to you. My feeling is use the RSN and dont worry about it. The heavier it is the wider the loops are. Nobodys turns as good outside, that I have seen, and that is a great offensive as well as a great defensive ploy.

BTW
We flew the Raptor a long time with Balsa spars and not a problem running Mag 28's on 30% heli fuel and 8-6 props.

I will admit that most didnt like it that way as it was a chore to keep ahead of in combat but to me that was the real fun part.

The car needed to be well stocked as at the speed and weight of the Raptor nothing was usually left, but also there was less damage as the weight was so low.

I just happen to think that we could have a little practice loop here guys. I can see that we could do a Gulf Coast RC, Brazos Valley RC, and Bayou City Flyers practice round robin to get the level of practice lifted a little (and get it restarted here at Scobee)

The Raptors we fly have a 36" wing span, so you'll might be thinking of a different kind of raptor.

So if we increase the wingspan of a Raptor, its no longer a Raptor????????

Using the size logic, y'all are not flying Raptors at all. The Raptor started 40".

A lot of the stuff out there shows the Raptor roots, just by looking at them.

The latest version of the Raptor is a constant cord wing at 48 to 52 inches.

I can say that the last time I talked to the designer his initial intent was to get people started in the developing stage and hopefully expand the number of pilots engaging in combat.

Shoot, guess I'm really out than. Here's a look at the latest version of the Raptor that Jimbo, LT and I conceived here in the swamp. Jimbo and LT have made numerous changes and iterations to Mr. Olivers original design. Do they resemble the original, not by much. Are they still one of the most nimble planes flying combat today? Ooooooh yeaaaah!!!!!

They might not be offical Raptors, but that is what our club uses for combat, pretty quick little things.

Combat Kid, let me know if you want some Raptor construction pics. I'll send them to you via email. They show a breakaway engine plate and other improvements and options.
