Re: Prime.

I use the choke plate and close it fully, then with the throttle wide open ( and of course the ignition off ) I rock the prop about 30 times.

As I do this I can easily see the fuel advancing to the carb w/o any problems.

Re: Ignition

At least you're getting somewhere!

Since SYSSA reported that the engine worked fine, don't assume that the problem is with the ignition module they supplied itself.

You may have a bad switch, a bad cable or something that may be preventing the module from getting full current.

But congrats on narrowing the problem down to this!

To prime it I use full choke and throttle open. Maybe it is just me (first gas engine this small) but it doesn't seem to move fuel very well.

Prop is 18.5 5.5.

By running well I mean it idles down reliably, accelerates crisply, not much for burbles, and it now starts very easily.

I didn't take a tach reading today, but it seems to be very strong on the top end.

In short- changed ignition module and all is well. I now have the DLE module installed in the plane, powered by the same Syssa IBEC and it runs great.

Naturally, since it is my day off, it is windy.... But I'm happy to have the thing running.

Congratulations Jeffin on getting the issue resolved. One concern regarding fuel feed is making sure the choke plate is fully seated. If not, it will likely not prime.

My new muffler now has around 10 plus flights and is still holding. Engine is now running great!

S&S - That's why I say choke it with your finger to check fuel draw and not with the mechanical choke since it can also be a problem.

Jeffin TD - When you say "it doesn't seem to move fuel very well.", I'm not sure what you're expecting. The fuel pump on this engine only needs to pump about one ounce for around 10 thousand strokes. It will pump more, but it is still a very small amount.

Check out the price compared to Chineese imports. Most people would rather purchase a DLE.

Check out the quality and features compared to the imports. Some people still appreciate quality and dependability.

Has anyone been able to get hold of Todd or anyone at Syssa in the last month or so?

We have a warranty issue for a customer and cant raise a peep out of them since an inital response regarding the problem early June.

Has he gone off air again?

Eh no.

I saw the engine at Toledo two years ago and talked to Todd.

I was quite impressed with the workmanship, CNC'ing and thought that went into it.

I wanted something solid and reliable for a few of my "better" planes...

This was it, and because it was made in the U.S. I willingly paid more for it.

I own DLE's and many other cheaper engines, but the Syssa is a cut above.

I would think two months would be plently of time to respond. There must be something else going on. I would try another email with "High Importance" selected and "Attention - Customer Service for Syssa Engine" in the subject line. Almost all of the email I get from outside the US goes to my spam folder, his may do the same thing and this will make it easier to spot.

Tried similar to that, and to a few different email addr I have for them. Havent had probs with emails getting to him in the past. And fwiw our email/domain is hosted in the USA, with USA based company (much better pricing in USA for web hosting than Aust) so email would appear to be from within USA. (is also .com not com.au domain)

He did respond initially saying that he would send a replacement engine to the customer (minus carb etc) to sort out the problem, and we would return the warranty one to him. Which is great service, but unfortunately the engine has never arrived and we have not been able to get a response since.

Now the customer is getting frustrated and this customer actually has 4 Syssa engines, he likes them that much. But the poor communication is stretching the friendship and this is my last option to start asking on public forums if anyone has heard from them.

Just a quick email with an update is all it takes, if its going to take more time....just tell us!

Does anyone have a back plate from the old Syssa Muffler that they would like to get rid of.

I am going to turn this pitts into a glass pack in attempt to bring the db down. I plan to drill out the back plate to almost mesh then machine an aluminum 3/8" spacer, then back it with another back plate and pack the space with ceramic muffler packing.

Yeah, I can hear it already but I am going to try it anyway. Just an experiment I have been thinking about.

Big end problem, needs parts. Todd wants to see the engine himself (fair enough) to see what has gone wrong but said was shipping replacement ''short'' engine direct to customer (great service) but sadly just hasnt eventuated and have been unable to get an update. Hence posted on here to see if anyone had heard from him.

When I first tried to contact him, apparently my e mail went to his spam filter.

You might try a phone call.

DL Engines - I would just send the complete engine back to him with details of the problem. He keeps records of each engine and I have had no problem getting work done under the warranty.

FYI - update

I finally received an email from Todd today saying he will be shipping the engine to our customer and should have his motor in 4 or 5 days.

I hope it doesn't get stuck in customs. I hate it when that happens.

As long as all the paperwork is in tact and signed, and is under $1000AUD in value including shipping (no duty or tax applied then) most comes through pretty quick for us.

That's great. I have been to 27 different countries and have had a lot of problems with customs and model plane equipment. Most of the problems were due to the fact that they did not know what the parts were or what they were used for.

Well I bought an engine from him last year and was/am very impressed with it. It has not been flown, just run on a test stand to rough in the needles and loosen it up a little. I'm building a KMP OV-10 so last month, (June 29) I ordered engine number 2. Paid by credit card on the day it was ordered and I still have no engine. The tracking number says usps has recieved notice that it will be shipped soon but still no progress on it. That information was sent to usps on the 20th one week ago. Where I live my flying season is very short so time spent waiting is frustrating to say the least.....not to mention I have a brand new twin project waiting on the bench. I have called and left messages and have been promised updates by email but nothing yet.
