JohnB, Talking about sealing the hinge line between the wing and aileron, what did you use tape or covering?

JohnB96041 -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 2:08 AM)

Drag: I always use clear covering. That way any design on the bottom is not covered up and the original covering shows through.

Drag -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 2:29 AM)

thanks JohnB: how did your 17 x 4W APC props test fly go? I'll never get my Funtana together before the snow flays, the weather is changing snow next week.

JohnB96041 -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 2:33 AM)

Drag: The first test flight with the 17 x 4W was really nice. Lots more virtical pull. I believe, that with some more trimming and balance adjustment it will be able to hover at about 75% throttle. The Saito 1.25 does not turn as many RPM's with the 17" prop but the Saito 1.25 really has a lot of torque. I am going by sound only. I have not put a tach to the difference in props. Will try to get that done in the next few days. Oklahoma still has a few nice flying days left before it gets toooooo cold for me.

Drag -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 2:44 AM)

JohnB: Nice it sounds like FUN! But I do agree not the Cold

kgeb -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 3:34 AM)

I have an old Funtana 90s with a CRRC 26i and a 17x6 prop. The plane flies well and does most maneuvers ok. There is a little coupling on knife edges, but controllable. BBBBut it has terrible wing rock at harrier speed and I cant hover it for anything. The engine has plenty of pull out, not a rocket but good. Once the engine is broken in I think it will turn a 18x6w 8000+ rpm. (17x6 currently 9300 rpm).

Any suggestions on the wing rock?

JohnB96041 -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 3:44 AM)

Wing rock with the Funtana S90 was a characteristic that we had to live with. However, I manufactured my own FSG's, opened up the bottom of each wing tip for blind nuts and installed the FSG's. It stopped the wing rock in high alpha slow flights like the harrier. The coupling was still a problem in knife edge flight, but manageable.

kgeb -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 4:34 AM)

Got any pictures of your SFG's how bid etc.

JohnB96041 -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 4:37 AM)

kgeb: Sorry, they were destroyed in a total distruction crash earlier this summer. I can tell you that I copied them off the Funtana x100. Same height, top and bottom, but built to match the airfoil of the Funtana S90. Also, covered in yellow to match the S90.

Scooterpilot -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 5:39 AM)

I'm hoping to have my Funtana done before Thanksgiving. I'm using a Syssa 30cc gasser with a 12oz tank and JR, DS9411 servos on all the control surfaces. I have the motor, servos and fuel tank installed all control surface are programmed in the radio.

I decided no to use the CA hinges and installed Robart hinges instead.

All I have to do is install the switches, battery, ignition and spinner and it will be ready to go.

Regards

Wingspam -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 5:00 PM)

Love the look of this new Funtana. I am thinking an Os 120 Ax since i have 1 in need of a home.

It says a 120 2 stroke is appropriate for this model, how do you really think it will perform with this engine?

Burc -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/22/2009 10:14 PM)

You can check out the video of the funtana on the RCU YouTube channel to get an idea of how it performs with a similar Evo 1.20.

peinarsson -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/23/2009 7:09 PM)

Starting to get more power out of my MLD 28 (ran about 1/2 gallon on the ground and another 1/2 in the air) and I can tell you this engine is perfect for this plane! I have removed the 1/2oz weight I put in the tail and she seems fine. It hovers at half throttle and then takes off to the sky, rolling harriers easy and flies hands off inverted! I'm using 18/6 Vess prop and my engine is running at around 7300rpm but I still have to lean her out some more as according to the review I found on this engine it should be perfect around 8000rpm (then she should really kick in...). Such a nice plane. Have not tried her yet with the side force generators (sold out...).

TommyRetz -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/23/2009 7:30 PM)

Most of these ARFs today are built so light that the landing gear can easily pull off the bottom on the plane if you land in a rough spot. I know many of you are trying to re-inforce the area around the landing gear with more wood. Has anyone tried simply using nylon bolts to attach the landing gear, similar to some trainers? If so, what bolt sizes, and what where your results? Or does this just create another problem?
Tom

You could use 1/4-20 nylon bolts aalong with Sig wing bolt blocks in the fuse to hold. At this weight I would prob use 3 bolts ...not sure if 4 would be overkill. The only issue being, if the gear rips off to save the fuse....the wheels/wheel pants could wind up going through the wings. Gotta decide which is is worse...fuse or wings. Im guessing the chance of wing damage other than covering would be lower. My first showtime was setup this way...and pants went right through the wings....but the fuse was saved.

Ken Cz -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/23/2009 11:47 PM)

I agree with using the nylon bolts to attach the gear.
It would be a lot easier to replace/repair some covering or a few ribs on the wings that to fix a ripped out landing gear block. Also, I had nylon bolts break on several bad landings and in some case the gear never even touched the wing, fuse.

DamonR -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/24/2009 4:52 AM)

Has anyone installed and flow with Robart hinges? I started building my Funtana with the Syssa 180.

Drag -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/25/2009 1:41 AM)

DamonR: Nice video, I'm going to use the stock CA hinges never had any problem with them.

Scooterpilot -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/25/2009 3:38 AM)

Damon

I installed Robart's on all my control surfaces too.

kgeb -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/25/2009 2:13 PM)

when you glue your robarts, which is better to use, 30 min. epoxy or thick ca?

w8ye -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/25/2009 7:58 PM)

I use 30 min epoxy

JohnB96041 -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/26/2009 2:56 AM)

Ok Gents: I picked up my second Funtana 125 today. Will wait until after the Holiday before starting on it. Going to set it up the same as the first one. Saito 1.25, 17 x 4W prop. Twins at the field either later this year or next Spring which ever happens first. Looking for some nice cool weather now. I did open the box and checked everything. All was OK. Can't wait to get started......... I will go back and read all the info in this thread to see if I want to do any other mods other than beef up the landing gear block.

Scooterpilot -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/26/2009 3:06 AM)

I use Gorilla glue for the Robarts

phantomdriver -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/26/2009 7:37 AM)

Haas anynoe mounted & flown a DLE30 yet. If so what cg issues if any?

Scooterpilot -> RE: New Funtana 125 (11/26/2009 7:53 AM)

phantomdriver,

I wish I could help answer your questions but I'm using the Syssa 180 (30CC) gasser and haven't got to balance my Funtana yet.
