A lot of guys are following this thread. Thank you for taking the time to teach us your methods. Also, your ideas for turning a tight work space into an efficient building platform. Great stuff.

Andy

My pleasure andy. I'm almost as anal about keeping a clean and coordinated shop (i really dont know where this came from) as it really does help make a build go faster. When everything is exactly where it is supposed to be it makes things easier, and then when you can make the most of your space and have things modular, it makes arranging the shop to make use of the room for different tasks even better. I will probably be putting some castors on that 3'x8' table the fuselage is on, at that will make life allot easier moving it around, especially when it comes time to mold the fuselage.

Finally got back home and was able to steal a few minutes to get the molds trimmed up and separated. The Rudder plug was a bit difficult to get out due to that bump, but it came out after a bit of work. Stab came out no problems. I've got to order the bonded fasteners, washers and wing-nuts, but these 2 molds are completed essentially. I'm leaving monday afternoon/evening for work until 23rd of September, so unfortunately not much will be done other than CAD work. The plus side, is i'll be able to order more materials, get my vacuum bagging system finished up and i'm going to order the prototype parts for the wing pivot assembiles.

here's a few pictures of the stab molds. I didn't get any of the rudder, but they turned out great as well.

Last update of "real" work on this for awhile...

Since my flight doesn't leave till 8pm tonight, i've pretty much have all day to do some things.

So, first off was getting the other stab waxed and the parting plane fit correct. Then the parting planes and registration bumps were waxed. The other stab is now ready to be molded once PVA is applied (which will be done when i get back).

Then all 24 pieces of cloth for the stab were cut (this takes about 30 minutes). Again, 8 layers of 2oz, 8 layers of 6oz and 8 layers of 18oz, each 1/2 of each cloth oriented between 0/90 and bias (45/45).

Then in anticipation of the nose cone, canopy, windscreen and ventral fin being molded these were all waxed:

An order was also placed for 40 sheets of airex foam. I'm suspecting this will last for 1 or 2 airframes.

Hi Thomas,

Looking good, keep at it bud.

I was at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson and found that they'd moved their F-14 in doors and now it's on display inside a nice air-conditioned hanger and without any ropes cordoning off the plane. Sure beats examining the plane outside in the desert sun when it's 100F+ degrees.

David,

Sorry, I only took a couple of shots of the Tomcat just as a quick reference. I figured that if I ever build one I would visit the museum again and take a comprehensive set of photos. If there are some particular shots you'd like to have, let me know and I'll get them during my next visit.

Jim,
More pictures are always good Especially of those odd area's that most people dont think to photograph that a modeler would worth gold. Like arresting hook pylon, pitot/AoA stuff, etc etc

Well since yesterdays travel plans went to hell in a hand basket, I got to stay the night and today at home. My flight now leaves out of DC at 10pm, so the bottom half of the 2nd horizontal stab half mold was layed up. It should be ready for separation and the other 1/2 of the mold to be layed up when i get back on the 2nd/3rd of sept. Then i'll leave again on the 5th for another 3 weeks

Yea everything here is good... I was out in the shop laying up the other stab mold half when it hit and thought it was just a train passing on the nearby tracks. didn't really know what it was till my buddy mentioned that the clothes line in the neighbors yard was shaking like mad.

how did things work out down there? the epicenter was only about 55-60miles from my house, so i'm surprised we didn't get more than we did.

Getting a little bit more work done on the cockpit CAD drawings. So far, the front cockpit is 90% complete, I just have the right side panel to draw up. These are drawn over-size for now, as they will have to be trimmed to fit each airplane. I've got the 2 side panels to do for the RIO's cockpit, and then the HUD, Seats, circuit breaker panels, and a few other items, then the cockpit will be done.

I'm thinking of offering 2 versions of cockpits. One will just need to be painted, and the 2nd will have all of the Displays and instruments removed, and be back-lit. An option that i may look into..

I will probably offer the cockpit separately as well, as it would make a cool display piece. It should also fit the other 1/7ish size F-14's out there as well.

Other than the Seat and HUD, the front cockpit is done. Now the torture of doing the Rio's side panels and weapons/radar control grips... when i say torture, i mean that 1 side panel in the Rio cockpit has twice as many switch's/butons than both of the pilot side panels....

More work done on the cockpit. Front cockpit is complete minus the Seat. Yeap, even the HUD is done Rear cockpit is 50% complete, I've just got to do the left side panel, center pedestal, GPS display and hand hold. I'm still looking for information the navy SJU-17"NACES" seat so i can get those drawn up accurately and with a good bit of detail, but its hard to come by, especially dimensions.

I've got some closer views of the cockpit here as well.

I want one!!!  Any Idea when the cockpit will be ready.  You may want to put the cockpit out first to help fund the rest of the project.  I'm sure i would need to trim off a little for it to fit. That backlit option would be awesome!

Other than the Tub (which i can't make the mold for that until I have the fuselage nose section molded) the cockpit is basically ready once the CAD work is completed.

Unfortunately right now, its looking like a complete cockpit kit (minus the ejections seats) is going to cost around $1,000 to be made. The pricing i'm being given is based on the amount of material needed to make the parts. So the more material i can make, the cheaper the parts, which means the cheaper the kit will be.

I'm going to go into the back-side of the instrument panels and other parts that are thick and solid and hollow them out, and see what kind of pricing I can get. JUST the panels are over $500 to be printed right now.

I am hoping to have the complete cockpit kit available for around $500. I know its still expensive for a cockpit, but I dont see being able to get it any lower than that w/o sacrificing detail. If i have to, I can always use the 3D printed parts for the side panels and what not as plugs for resin cast parts, which would make it much cheaper, but the amount of detail will be lost.

Either way, i'll make it work out. Just another one of those challenge's of bringing a new product to market.

Oh, the Throttle levers are only $15, so that is officially the cheapest part for the entire airplane. LOL

$500 is reasonable for the detail.  Get it done
