My first thought was a Midnight Pumpkin, since that was my first truck. But then I remembered how often that thing was broken down. Thoughts...

Stampede all the way...i'm sure it would readily handle almost any abuse your kid can throw its way.

If you're interested in a kit, which IMO is the only way to go, then I would seriously look to Tamiya.  My first RC was a Lunchbox back in 1987 when I was 6.  I loved it!!!  I still love it!!!!  It's VERY reasonably priced, and is fairly simple to assemble and maintain.  Whoever it was that said their Midnight Pumpkin, basically the same as a Lunchbox, was always broken down may have done a poor job of assembling it.  The MP/LB trucks are very tough.  In fact, their is a HUGE thread dedicated to the LB(lunchbox)!!!  Another great Tamiya MT that's affordable, but significantly more expensive, is the Super Clodbuster.  I also have one of those, and I'll vouch for its quality and durability.  Their is also a HUGE thread about the Clod's too!  As your son, and you, grow into the hobby you can modify these vehicles substantialy too.  What was once a simple and fun RC can take a turn to becoming quite a good performing RC as well!  Look into them.

I would also recommend either the Slash or Stampede.  Their both tough and waterproof.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my Midnight Pumpkin...it just seemed like I was busting contol arms a lot. No where near as often as my brother was breakng turnbukles on his King Cab, but often enough to be annoying. I want somthing he can run in the grass, so I think the Slayer is out, thouh it does look like fum. (maybe I'll get an RC10 for myself) I do like the idea of the sealed electronics and the ability to go throttle 50% on the xl-5 esc, so the Stampede is looking petty good right now.
