Mike,

The last I heard QQ will not be at the NATS this summer.

Here are a few pictures. I think one of them is a repeat of what Ricardo posted. And no Mike, Quique will not be at the Nats, with his new job and the close proximity to the World's, it's a bit much to do both.

Elan120, I think that Quique spinner is custom made by Tru-Turn. You just tell them what you want (spinner size, shape, color, prop size and brand and if you want something special like Quique´s have) and they will do it. They have a really good custom service.

Quique's spinner is a standard Tru Turn blue anodized spinner having special cutouts to accomodate a prop hub for Rasa folding propeller blades. That is the exact set-up that Chad Northeast designed and using for about a year so far. Very efficient and powerfull. Now becoming popular though. And things become COOL when Quique uses them eh!

It is not (mainly) the "fold" ability that makes this propeller set-up good. The blades are very light and aerodynamically more efficient. Gives you lots of power with less current usage and the low moment of inertia helps the motor to accelerate and decelerate quicker. On the other hand we noticed that the folding feature makes the propeller move with respect to the airplanes body when the airplane rotates at the turns, hence reducing the resistance to change attitude due to gyroscoping effect. This helps the plane rotate easily in the corners in pitching and yawing during the turns, we also found that the model requires less side thrust in this set-up.

Ricardo,

Thanks for the information. First time seeing it, and it is very nice. I will check with Tru Turn to learn more.

The Rasa props are also a lot quieter than the APC props due to no flex over the span of the blade.

I have a new size of hub that I am using this year to further optimize the Rasa folding prop setup that I ran last year. This hub is going to be widely available within a few days, made to my spec's. I will be making a separate post about it with some pictures fairly soon. I don't want to say too much more about it in this thread as its not related to QQ's new model!

The counter rotating prop eliminates P factor as the blades cancel each other's torque.

I made an interview to Sebastiano Silvestri in the World Championship in Argentina in 2007.
He explained that is not needed anti-torque incidence in the motor.
And he controls better down lines speed because prop blades are much wider than standar ones and they are 2.

He told me that he can control the down line speed with throtle stick esasily.
I saw it in his flights and it was notorious.

Hi,
In Portugal QQ was using a modified APC 20x 15 instead of the Rasa paddles.
Has anybody got any info as to why ????

Hi Brian!

I'm not sure why QQ used a modded aye pee see but I have absolutely no doubt that there is a very, very good reason.

What QQ told me was basically this,

When he ran the RASA 20.2x17 which is has very little blade at the root, he was happy with the performance but noticed that on uplines the plane was pulling to the canopy (I think he said, but its not relavant anyway).....and when he switched to the APC it was not doing that. I talked to him about it for quite a while and he feels that because of the different blade areas between the two props this was causing some changes in the flow that effected the amount of downthrust required. He felt rather than mess around with modifying the thrust to just run the APC. To get the performance he wanted he modified it, I think its a 21x14, pitched up to 21x15 and thinned out then stiffened with some carbon. Whatever he did it was the quietest plane there in flight IMO.

What Chad said!

Brian, I haven't forgotten about you, I failed to mention which airplane I was talking about when I forwarded your message to Quique. If I don't get an e-mail back from him before I go up to Illinois, I'll beat it out of him when I get there!
