The time is near, for the Tamiya KV-1 to appear.. In honor of its soon to be released status, I give you this piece of history.

I found an old photograph of a KV-1 that was somewhat of a Legend in the summer of 1941. In late June alone, it took the lives of 37 invading Panzer II, III and IV tanks. One of the crew members took this photo, which shows one of its victims (a Panzer IV), burning in the background. The KV's Commander was a fanatical Bolshevik soldier and would later clash with the best of the equally fanatical Totenkopf Division on the Eastern front. His tank bears the name of his dead fiance who lived in Western Russia near the Polish border. She was killed by an Einsatzgruppen unit in the early stages of the invasion. The rage from his loss gave him the motivation to extract the maximum killing power from within the steel of his KV tank. Every war photo tells a story, and now you've heard the story behind this portrait of a bygone era of struggle, blood, guts and steel!

Very intriguing story. I especially like the slogan on the tank being a loved one vs the normal Bolshevik propaganda. The Orthodox church in the background is also a bit different than the normal propaganda photos.

As far as the photoshop comment, I was having the same thoughts, but the idea was still captivating for the reasons I stated. Maybe just rename the post to "Imaginery KV-1" rather than "Legendary KV-1"

It is well done and a cool story. It's just hard to make grass look correct in scale.

Here is some more KV1 action, this is the some guy in the story above actually captured on film doing some of his fanatical fighting. (only this time in a tank he borrowed from a mate while his one was having battle damage repaired)

Hope you enjoy it.

Cheers

Alan.

No the first one was here as I was half way through weathering I used it as a prop for another movie.

More news to hand on that fanatical Russian Tank Commander, it was not his girlfriend that was killed, rather his stamp collection was stolen.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments Frank and Darrin.

Nice videos Alan! I had already seen your Stug one, but not the other one. Actually Alan, his girlfriend had his stamp collection with her, and the Germans stole it from her after they killed her! So, you can imagine how upset he must have been.

For the guy that asked, Alan's KV is a Heng Long. The only person, other than the Tamiya people, that currently have a fully assembled and painted Tamiya KV-1 is me! As you can see below.

This tank is based on the old KV wartime photo. This is what it would have looked like in color and to the unfortunate Panzer crews that saw it on the battlefield..

HG1980 - I don't really have a Tamiya KV-1, at least not yet.. What you see is just a retouch/modified version of an original photo from Tamiya's KV product page. I was experimenting with my own "look" for it if I end up purchasing one.

Since some of you have enjoyed the story behind this particular tank and the vintage photo. I thought I would share another photo with you. This one is said to have been kept mounted on the inside of this KV's turret by our now well known Commander. She was half Russian, half Polish and they had planned to be married in 1942. That was before the Eastern Blitzkrieg of 41 began of course..

RSEA,

Great Job. My wife is from Moscow Region, Korolev to be exact (used to be Kaliningrad). I ve been to several cities in Russia including Moscow and its really awsome to see/talk to the veterans. I was in Russia in the 90's when they celebrated the 50th anniversary of the the Great Patriotic War, most notably Victory Park in Moscow. Nothing like it in the US as far as the percentage of people who died or fought. Its really humbling from my perspective, even though one of my grandfathers served on two different escort carriers in the Pacific and my other grandfather was in the Italian resistance fighting Nazis. Long story short maybe when I get my HL KV-1 I'll put "Olga", "Olya", or "Olechka" on mine. That's my wife's name.

Mine was born in Saratov, but grew up in Sevastopol. Here's a pick or two of the Victory Day parades here. Of course lots of the vets are gone now, you can really see the difference each year in the parades.
RSEA, nice photo shop. Vollmer Bavarian Church, and the Vollmer burned out house behind the tank.
When you fellow tankers are ready for your slogans or names for your KVs, do contact either me or Eugene for correct cyrillic writing.

We got two gentlemen with Russian wives, and Eugene from Russia in here. Between the three of you I was sure you might have identified my KV Commander's girlfriend/fiance... As she is a fairly famous Russian girl. Take another look at her picture and since you know the Cryillic alphabet, read her name on the side of the turret again.. One of you should know who she is

And no...she is not my girlfriend, or my wife lol. Not that I wouldn't mind having her as such.. haha.

Marina who? I don't keep up on the celebs or politicians here. They come and they go...well except for Ushenko and Timoshenko, who are like an agrivated zit that just won't go away.
As for Russian wives, two of us live here. Only fsciorelli is in USA. and there is a few klicks between Eugene and me, me being somewhat south of him.

Uh.....Marina Orlova? That looks kind of like her Wikipedia photo. But I thought she was a philologist, not a philatelist. Did you photoshop the Peasant Outfit, too? Very, Very Nice!!!

Yes, your guess is correct! You win a free KV-1 kit! haha Marina "Hotforwords" Orlova is the answer! She is a philologist, it was Alan that brought the philatelist aspect into the story (which I played along with). Actually no, I did not create the peasant outfit, Marina had already done that for me in one of her older videos (she was portraying her Great Grandmother). I remembered seeing it, and thought it would work great for my story. I just put the finishing touches on the photo. I should suggest she do word origins for Kliment, Voroshilov, Sturmovik, Bolshevik etc.

Marina has kindly volunteered (unknown to her lol) to appear in another KV related image that may find its way to the forum at some time in the future.. With the money she is making off all those web ads, she could afford to buy a Tamiya KV and chase her little dog around with it. Get one of her slaves (I mean boyfriends) to build it for her.

Alan - I have never heard of Monica Ferres.. You should show us a picture, maybe I can name a German tank after her.

Evgeni,

My wife still struggles with my tank hobby, but I mentioned that you lived nearby. Actually she just got back from a week in Russia. She brough back Ararat cognac and priyaniki for me. Two of my favorite parts of Russia. PS I just found I can get 10 year Ararat from a company in New Jersey for a good price.

Franchik
(My Russian nickname)

This is some war footage of the last moments of said Russian KV1 commander, he got taken out by a HL PzIv with a very nice recoil movement on it.

I think they caught him while he was sleeping off that crate of Vodka he and his crew had for lunch.

Google the name Monica Ferres to see what I mean about the likeness, phwwwoarrrrr.
